POPSwilling to bear the cost of being bad FTA: As soon as you incentivise good behaviour by charging bad behaviour, you are legitimising bad behaviour. When it’s ok to do the wrong thing as long as you pay the price, how can doing the right thing be priceless?

POPSAn Interesting Take On Healthcare What do I have to fear from a public health plan? That they might charge me less or, heavens, that I might pay the same amount, and actually get coverage? Some might say the Corporate Government is more American, because I have the freedom to not buy it. Freedom to go bankrupt if my child gets sick in this bloated, parasitic health care system. Freedom, once I’m bankrupt, to go to the emergency room and foist the costs off on everyone else. Freedom, if I ever get out of bankruptcy again, to pay whatever skyrocketing price my insurance company might happen to be charging five years down the road. That’s the Corporate Government’s idea of freedom. In this modern age, where power abhors a vacuum, you’re always going to have one Government or the other. As your doctor might say, choose your poison.

POPSObama Administration Sued Over Healthcare Enemies List
Nevertheless, say the two groups filing suit, the information collection effort continues under another name and is part of an "unlawful pattern and practice to collect and maintain information" on the exercise of free speech, which "continues in violation of the Privacy Act and First Amendment even if the Defendants terminate a particular information-collection component due to negative publicity." "My hate mail started shortly after the White House issued the 'fishy' request," said Kathryn Serkes, AAPS' Director of Policy and Public Affairs. "We were quite visible and vocal before then, so it doesn't seem like a coincidence. Who did they share their data with? With whom might they share it?" In the suit, the groups are demanding the White House remove all information already collected, and further, be prohibited from collecting any personal data in the future. POPSFast Food Industry’s 7 Most Heinous Concoctions The American fast food industry, in its attempt to survive at the expense of our health, has come up with some creative gastronomical mashups that not only play on our weakness for artery-hardening, sugar-saturated, taste-bud tantalizers but also keeps the U.S. health care system fat with wasted spending. The best way to ‘reform’ this country’s health care system is to stop feeding it with our extremely unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles that leads to heart disease, cancer, stroke, COPD, diabetes, etc. We like the convenience of fast food, but we can force fast food chains to come up with healthier fare by educating ourselves on what a healthy diet actually consists of, and what it doesn’t. Trust me, a healthy diet is not offered at fast food restaurants. Education and a desire to live a longer healthier life is key.

POPSThe Three Scams The 3 biggest scams in America; and the worst thing is that they are all technically legal. 1) American Healthcare, the worst system in all the Western countries, ripping people off by charging them 50-100% more than they should be paying, if they can even afford it at all. 2) American Banking/Mortgages, even after the housing bubble popped, there are still no solid regulations preventing it from happening again 3) Credit Card Companies, charging rates on par with mafia loan sharks, with people held hostage to their rates because there is so much that can't be done in America without Credit. The Three Lynchpins of Corruption that need to be toppled if America wants to survive.

POPSEPA Admits Cap and Trade Won't Work Sen. Inhofe said. “With China and India recently issuing statements of defiant opposition to mandatory emissions controls, acting alone through the job-killing Waxman-Markey bill would impose severe economic burdens on American consumers, businesses, and families, all without any impact on climate.” Getting China and India on board with a carbon reduction plan is highly unlikely. Even then, a multilateral approach does not guarantee a successful system or the ultimate goal of global temperature reduction. Take a look at Europe: The experience of the European Union is Exhibit A. Emissions targets were set too high. Too many pollution allowances were given away to industry. The value of a carbon credit plummeted. Companies made windfall profits by charging customers more for energy while selling allowances they didn’t need. And the Europeans have not had much success reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

POPSRyanair to close check-in desks "Ryanair's web check-in service allows passenger to check-in from 15 days to four hours before, and print, or re-print, their boarding card up to 40 minutes prior to their scheduled departure time." The new fee policy replaces Ryanair's previous practice of offering free on-line ticketing and charging extra for anyone who opted for face-to-face check-in. The company already adds £10 or more to each round-trip ticket per passenger if the flight's bought with nearly every major credit or debit card. The airline also announced it will no longer accept bookings for unaccompanied passengers under the age of 16 years. All new bookings will require passengers, including infants and domestic flight passengers, to hold a valid passport or valid national identity card.

POPSBailed-out banks eye toxic asset buys The US government policy encourages banks to buy the dodgy securities which they are supposed to be selling by using tax payers money to cover the bad risks which the banks are supposed to remove from their balance sheets. Same toxic assets, except now the taxpayer has become liable for the losses, too. Is this all panned by some evil geniuses, or are people making it up as they go along?

POPSStates discover new source of tax income If this were to be adopted in every state, it could further push us to use mass transit or an alternate non-fossil-fueled means of travel, of course we could then be taxed based on how far from home we’ve traveled. Maybe a ‘distanced traveled’ tax computed at checkout in stores. States hand out tax credits to get us to buy more fuel-efficient vehicles and then grouse about loss of gas-tax income. They champion more fuel efficient vehicles as a means of protecting the environment and cutting back on fossil fuel dependency and when it hits their pocketbook they increase taxes in other areas. While it is no surprise to learn that our savings earned through fuel efficiency is lost in higher gas prices, now we learn that those people who could not afford the high prices of new fuel-efficient cars will pay more anyway with this latest taxing scheme. What we need to do is cut back on the number of politicians and the all of the perks they get.

POPSRhode Island - Tax on Miles Driven One question yesterday concerned the agency’s ability to efficiently spend roughly twice as much money per year as the $354 million it spends now.
