The End of America?
graphictruth
by graphictruth  Yesterday 12:18 PM    2
During a question-and-answer period after the speech, Natasha Cohen (CAS’12) asked Bacevich how internal change might be brought about. “We need to live within our means, as individuals in our households and in terms of the services provided for by government at various levels,” he answered. “I’m no economist, but I do believe there is no free lunch. Everything has to be paid for.”

"Large Fella" Bikes Back to Life

50 pounds in the first four months – and they kept on coming off. He'll be quick to point out that he wasn't “dieting”; he was changing his life. Permanently. He and his family left the east coast for Minneapolis, largely for its reputation as a cycling haven. Thus far Cutshall has dropped to about 230 pounds; he estimates that he'll plateau around 180 but says, “"It's not about a goal weight," he said. "I'm just doing what's healthy for my body, and the results will follow."

Forecasts for the 25 Years...
balthazarus
by balthazarus  10-6-2008
From the page: "A Crisis or an Opportunity? What Makes the Difference? The critical difference is whether you are prepared. If you’re aware of possible developments… if you see changes coming… you can take action and prepare yourself. In a rapidly changing world, new opportunities are emerging everywhere. If you get an advance notice of these possible changes, you can be ready. You can ride these waves of change to benefit your career, your business, your family and your investments." Why not changing ourselves as well? it seems as if all that will come should not affect us on deep levels, but why? part of preparation is accepting the changing of human that may come.

We'll all be citizens of virtual worlds
wildcat
by wildcat  10-3-2008    1
What is the point of all this? It is quite likely that it will be a natural thing for future generations to meet their friends in worlds such as these, where they can watch the same music or videos while chatting to each other. And if that is where youngsters will be hanging out, then brands and media, including newspapers, will have to be there. Other life-mimicking worlds about to be released include shopping malls such as themall.tv, which aims to emulate an entire shopping mall with scores of high street shops. It claims to have signed up 500 brands.

Biden: "I Have Been Field Dressed!"
merrie
by merrie  10-2-2008    1
Update: 10:20 - Quite literally in the same breath, Joe laments, "I'm not gonna change..." and then goes on to boast about his record of change. Update: 10:24 - After an unsteady beginning, Palin seemed to get consistenly more comfortable (and more effective throughout the debate). In the home stretch, she's managing to stay on positive notes, enunciating her and McCain's strong points, and thus keeping possession of the ball, leaving Biden to spend much of his times grouchily refuting her. Update: 10:28 - On the final question regarding "changing the tone" in Washington, Joe claims he has never - not since his freshman year anyway - questioned the motives (or opposed to the judgment) of a fellow Senator. Fact check away. Update: 10:38 - Was anyone else bracing for an awkward "hot mic" moment after the debate ended and they left both candidates' mics open?

Counterintuitive physics may help everyone drive home quicker
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-2-2008
The second concept, the Nash equilibrium, occurs when an individual cannot choose a better strategy for himself if other individuals keep their strategies unchanged (i.e. an individual can not improve his situation by changing unilaterally). In the traffic situation, say you know which routes the other drivers take, maybe because you’ve tried different routes to find out which is the fastest way to get home from work. After trying different routes, you choose the route that is fastest for yourself. Then you cannot find a faster route as long as the other drivers stick to their same routes (which they do, because they cannot find faster routes, either). But if many drivers could change their routes simultaneously, then the effect might be a decrease in everyone’s travel time, and society would come closer to the social optimum rather than languishing in the Nash equilibrium. The scientists found that modifying the network structure can sometimes lead to faster overall travel times,

A Cardiac Arrest And A Better Doctor
debbyski
by debbyski  9-29-2008    2
"When I first encountered Mrs. Cheever, she was near death, unconscious, gray skin, gray hair, gray eyes. I had considered it cruel to be resuscitating this 89-year-old. Seeing her now, conversing and alert, with hopes for the future, was a lesson more powerful than any I could ever have found in a book or lecture. From that point on, I no longer considered a patient's age as a determinant of the care they should receive. Instead, my newly acquired reverence for elderly patients became a steady source of joy and pride that has lasted throughout my career."
