POPSCalifornians' changing attitudes on abortion, same-sex marriage More: Public opinion on same-sex marriage breaks dramatically along party lines: Democrats in 1977, for example, were opposed to same-sex marriage by a 2-to-1 ratio. Today, they support the issue 2 to 1. Independent voters were opposed to same-sex marriage in 1977 by a 5-to-3 ratio; today, they support it 5 to 3, the poll showed. That's in contrast to Republicans, who today are actually "more opposed than they were 30 years ago" to same-sex marriage, the poll found. In 1977, GOP voters stood against it 65 to 30 percent; today, they are against it 68 to 23 percent.

POPSDrugs, elephants and American prisons
Attitudes towards drug use, particularly marijuana, are changing. The main reasons for the shift -- baby boomers, a generation familiar with drug use, are in charge of the country’s institutions; the dismal economy makes people question public expenditures that do not seem essential; and the drug violence in Mexico that has begun spilling across the border. The argument for legalizing marijuana, and eventually other drugs, is straightforward: it would transform a law-and-order problem into a problem of public health. Where it belongs. At the annual “smoke-out” held April 20 in Boulder, Colorado, an estimated crowd of more than 10,000 lit up marijuana joints on the campus of the University of Colorado. The smoke hung over the scene like a grey blanket. Overhead, an aircraft dragged a banner with the words “Hmmm, smells good up here.” Police watched but made no arrests and issued no fines. The author correctly states that the war on drugs is political. It should be ended.

POPSGOP and Gay Marrage. Times Change Steve Schmidt, who was the senior strategist to Senator John McCain of Arizona during his presidential campaign, said in a speech and an interview that Republicans were in danger of losing these younger voters unless the party comes to appreciate how issues like gay marriage resonate, or do not resonate, with them. “Republicans should re-examine the extent to which we are being defined by positions on issues that I don’t believe are among our core values, and that put us at odds with what I expect will become, over time, if not a consensus view, then the view of a substantial majority of voters,” he said in a speech.

POPSNature Words Dropped From Children's Dictionary There are probably 1,000's of obsolete words in this and many other dictionaries that could have been dropped without being missed. Is this a reflection of changing attitudes towards nature? Are we failing our children by giving them electronic substitutions for what nature use to teach us? When we lose touch with a thing we lose respect for what it has to offer. Maybe the publishers are simply making a statement.

POPSApparent change in women’s fidelity "Dr. Fisher notes that infidelity is common across cultures, and that in hunting and gathering societies, there is no evidence that women are any less adulterous than men. The fidelity gap may be explained more by cultural pressures than any real difference in sex drives between men and women. " more women talking about affairs centered on “electronic” contact. “I see a changing landscape in which the emphasis is less on the sex than it is on the openness and intimacy and the revelation of secrets,” Are these also signs of the revolution ?-)

POPSWe'll all be citizens of virtual worlds What is the point of all this? It is quite likely that it will be a natural thing for future generations to meet their friends in worlds such as these, where they can watch the same music or videos while chatting to each other. And if that is where youngsters will be hanging out, then brands and media, including newspapers, will have to be there. Other life-mimicking worlds about to be released include shopping malls such as themall.tv, which aims to emulate an entire shopping mall with scores of high street shops. It claims to have signed up 500 brands.

POPSAcceptance of Gay People in Military Grows Dramatically Changing attitudes on the issue parallel broader swings in public views about homosexuality. In their recent review of 20 years of polling data, the Pew Research Center reported "a major shift away from highly negative attitudes toward gays and support for punitive actions against gays." In the 2007 Pew data, for example, 28 percent said local school boards should have the right to fire teachers known to be gay; that was down sharply from the 51 percent who said so in 1987. a

POPSA Victory For Same Sex Marriage "The new decision still leaves considerable work to be done. New York’s ban on performing same-sex marriage remains in force. And there is a chance that the marriage-recognition decision will now be appealed. Still, the ruling marks important progress toward changing laws and attitudes that deprive gay people of equal rights and deny the dignity of New York’s many gay families. They should be able to live, marry and raise children with the same respect and the same rights as anyone else."

POPSHarvey Milk Day....HOORAY!! It's a joy to hear that California may establish a state holiday in the name of civil rights leader and the first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk who was assassinated in 1978. Harvey is a hero to the gay community, and yet he fought for the rights of all people, not just his fellow gay Americans. This is another example of how attitudes are changing in the U.S. Even though it gets discouraging at times, the country is on the road to accepting gays, and lesbians as equal to every other American.

POPSGirls power on rise in Asia - hope The most important factor in changing attitudes toward girls was the radical shift in the country’s economy that opened the doors to women in the work force as never before and dismantled long-held traditions, which so devalued daughters that mothers would often apologize for giving birth to a girl.

POPSChanging Images of Man I haven't read this yet myself, so I have absolutely no idea what it's about, but it sounded interesting, so I clipped it. Good enough reason, I reckon! ;)

POPSCritique of religious-studies public school curriculum Critical response to a seminar on teaching with the theme "Religion in American History," from a conservative Christian perspective (from EdWatch.org). For the record, I think the critique is misguided, but it's still an important one.
