The Thing in a Jar!!!
revenantdm
by revenantdm  7-9-2008
This is right up my alley. When I worked in FX, we'd make "things" all the time. Usually we would put it in a place where our poor victim would either have it touch him or confront him in an unexpected manner. I want to point out that NO ONE was ever hurt by these pranks, at least, NOT the pranks I was in on. Safety is extremely important as well as knowing when the Mark has had enough and knowing not to take a prank farther than a certain limit. I DO NOT ADVISE ANYONE TO PULL ANY MALICIOUS PRANKS AND NEVER TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS!

A radical new idea could save the world’s ecosystems.
egsnyder
by egsnyder  7-7-2008    1
Tickell proposes setting a global limit for carbon pollution then selling permits to pollute to companies extracting or refining fossil fuels. This has the advantage of regulating a few thousand corporations - running oil refineries, coal washeries, gas pipelines and cement and fertiliser works for example - rather than a few billion citizens.

Foreign Firms Investing In Iraq
merrie
by merrie  6-17-2008    4
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari, in Washington on an official visit, said Monday that larger U.S. firms were waiting for more security before entering the market. Zebari noted that Turkish and Russian companies were already active in Iraq. "They take risks," he told USA TODAY in an interview. "No pain, no gain." Many of the companies active in Iraq now are from countries, including France, Russia and Turkey, that did not send combat troops to back the U.S.-led invasion. Some U.S. and Iraqi officials say American companies risk losing an early opportunity to establish long-term strategic ties with Iraq. "My question is, 'Where are you guys in terms of investment, in terms of economic engagement?' " said Naufel al-Hassan, Iraq's commercial counselor in Washington. "Iraqis need your support. Why let someone else do that?" http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2008-06-16-iraqinvestment_N.htm?csp=34

"It is the smell of shit. Raw untreated sewage is pumped every day out of the Jewish settlements"

"Humanitarian & Environmental Disaster of Epic Proportions" Vast stagnant pools of waste are being held within fragile dykes across the strip, and rotting. Last March, one of them burst, drowning a nine-month-old baby and his elderly grandmother in a tsunami of human waste. The Centre on Housing Rights warns that one heavy rainfall could send 1.5m cubic metres of faeces flowing all over Gaza, causing "a humanitarian and environmental disaster of epic proportions". So how did it come to this? How did a Jewish state founded 60 years ago with a promise to be "a light unto the nations" end up flinging its filth at a cowering Palestinian population? ...Johann Hari

Sultans of Solo
mickfinn
by mickfinn  2-17-2008    4
Shortly after their father died, on June 12, 2004, each contending brother had himself crowned King Pakubuwono XIII. One coronation was held inside the palace, one outside, at the mansion of a friend. When the time came to commemorate their father’s death, palace insiders say, the princes carried out separate tomb-sealing rituals: two teams of masons, two teams mixing cement, two solemn ceremonies. When the older prince expelled the younger one, a sister who was the keeper of the keys was exiled from the palace along with him and hid the keys. With the keys out of reach, neither those inside the palace nor those outside could open the giant padlocked doors of the chamber where palace treasures and ritual objects are kept. As a result, neither coronation included all the rites and the relics needed to anoint a Surakartan king. “There is no king,” said Mr. Soedarmono, a professor at the State University. “Neither one is king. When you write about them, you can just call them mister.”

A Mobile Sea Barrier To Save Sinking Venice
urbanlife
by urbanlife  1-8-2008
The project is building 78 floodgates at the 3 inlets that link the Venice lagoon to the Adriatic Sea. When the giant doors are at rest, they will be lying on the bottom of the inlet channel, invisible to the world. Each gate will be up to 92 feet long, 65 feet wide, and will weigh 300 tons. The gates allow one inlet to close and not the other so you are not obliged to close the whole lagoon. Some 37 percent of the work has been completed, and MOSE should open as planned in 2012.

Occupations At Risk for Mesothelioma (maglinant mesothelioma)
digitalsjob
by digitalsjob  12-31-2007
Malignant Mesothelioma is a serious form of cancer that affects the lining of the chest, lungs, heart and abdomen. Most cases of malignant mesothelioma are caused by repeated exposure to asbestos, which is a fire-retardant material that was used to insulate buildings. It is also found in the ceiling or floor tiles, roof shingles, cement, automotive brakes and clutches. The exhibition can also be of drinking contaminated water. When around asbestos fibers are inhaled, and were trapped in the deepest parts of the lungs, which may lead to malignant mesothelioma.

Bhutto Assasination and Paki "Regime Change" Agenda
blueridge
by blueridge  12-29-2007
It was the CIA who helped Musharraf into power by coupe in 1999, who benefits most from Bhutto's assassination. The typical "militant Islam" and "Al Qaeda did it" propaganda being played by Musharraf government is highly incredulous, and the people are not believing the official story for a minute, while it is being played heavily in the U.S. to propagate the "war on terrorism" in order to continue global "regime change". The assassination of Bhutto represents classical "destabilization" tactics employed in history to radically alter governments. Musharraf benefits most from her assassination, along with the Anglo-American interests, and probably cement his power--until the people rise up against him in what should only be expected as "blow-back". Odds are he will again declare Martial Law, and begin iron fist rule, perhaps without suspension this time.

Recycle your body....be buried in a biodegradable coffin.
Newfman
by Newfman  12-27-2007
Options range from natural-fiber shrouds to fair-trade bamboo caskets lined with unbleached cotton. There are also more traditional-looking handcrafted coffins made of wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The market is potentially huge. U.S. funeral homes generate an estimated $11 billion in revenue annually and that figure is sure to grow as baby boomers age.
