POPSUnexplained Mysteries of Werewolves The mythological belief in werewolves has been with us for centuries. Many historians and folklorists have pondered the origins of the belief in lycanthropy, which is really the human ability to change into not only wolves but bears, big cats and other dangerous creatures. Of all of these transformations though, that of man into wolf is the best known.

POPSObama's Stunning Admission Obama admits Dems "snuck in" health care provisions Posted by Tom Bevan So it's a bit of shock to find out now - from the President himself, no less - that one or both of the bills that passed Congress late last year (the House passed its version in late November, the Senate on Christmas Eve Day) contained language that would have violated this pledge. If we take this statement at face value, President Obama is admitting the the health care bills passed by either the House or Senate (or both) contained provisions which were "snuck in" - presumably by Democratic members and perhaps on behalf of certain lobbyists - that would have in fact prevented people from keeping their current insurance and/or choosing the doctor they want. POPSConservative Dystopia vs. Economic Life This is what Reaganites have always meant when they’ve talked of a “shining city on a hill.” They envision a dystopia whose anti-tax fires incinerate social fabric faster than James Dobson can say “family values”—a place like Colorado Springs that is starting to reek of economic death. more in next comment box ...

POPSSHE MARRIES YOU BUT BELONGS TO ME. To many times I've heard or read (esp) on Craigs List, of people getting rid of their pets because their new girlfriend/boyfriend doesn't like cats/dogs. Bad idea, they should be getting a different girl/boy friend.

POPSCats of Blockaded Leningrad "The family had cat Maksim and a parrot which was called Jack. Almost every day, their uncle that lived together with them wanted to make a meal ofthe cat and each time the rest of the family went out they always locked the cat into the storeroom. As time passed by, the cat began growing malnourished and sicky because of poor food. Once, Maksim managed to jump onto the cupboard and opened the cage where the parrot Jack lived in. Family thought thatthe cat would eat Jack, but instead of doing so two pets huddled up to one another for warmth and fell asleep. After that, the uncle didn’t try to make anything bad tothe cat. Soon after the parrot died but Maksim survived and happened to be one of the few cats that lived through the blockade. Maksim died in 1957. Of old age"

POPSSpecies of the Day - 31st January 2010 - Pentalagus-furnessi IUNC Red List (The Amami Rabbit): http://www.iucnredlist.org/sotdfiles/pentalagus-furnessi.pdf It's evolution occurred on two small Japanese islands without any mammalian predators. Widespread habitat degradation due to logging & development has seen a significant decline in the Amami rabbit populations with only 4 sub-populations remaining. Since 1980 there has been a decline in the old growth forest by 70-90% on the islands of Amami & Tokuno. Added to this is predation by introduced mammalian species ie cats, dogs & mongoose. The Amami rabbit is protected though still faces threat through loss of habitat and predation by introduced mammalian species.

POPSSpecies of the Day - 26th January 2010 - Gallotia-bravoana From: http://www.iucnredlist.org/species-of-the-day Native to La Gromera island (Canary Islands) & is critically endangered. It can grow up to 1.2m in length. Population decline is attributed to overgrazing, hunting and predation by feral cats & rats. It was thought to be extinct and then in 1999 a small population was discovered to be living on the western side of the island. Though populations have been increasing due to conservation efforts, there are still on 90 individuals that remain in the wild. International legislation now protects these giant lizards & a captive breeding program has been established on the island. There is still a need to control cat populations and educate the local people on the island.
