Wall Street Bonuses Vs. Normal Wages: A Disturbing Trend
sincitykitty
by sincitykitty  10-21-2009
(CHART, VIDEO) A Goldman Sachs International adviser defended compensation in the finance industry as his company plans a near-record year for pay, saying the spending will help boost the economy. "We have to tolerate the inequality as a way to achieve greater prosperity and opportunity for all," Brian Griffiths, who was a special adviser to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, said yesterday at a panel discussion hosted by St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The real reason that capitalism is so crash-prone
Johanna_G
by Johanna_G  9-28-2009    2
When a person walks, lifting and dropping each foot in turn, he or she produces a slight sideways force. If hundreds of people are walking in a confined space, and some happen to walk in step, they can generate enough lateral momentum to move a footbridge"just a little. Once the footway starts swaying, however subtly, more and more pedestrians adjust their gait to get comfortable, stepping to and fro in synch. As a positive-feedback loop develops between the bridge’s swing and the pedestrians’ stride, the sideways forces can increase dramatically and the bridge can lurch violently. The investigating engineers termed this process “synchronous lateral excitation,” and came up with a mathematical formula to describe it.What does all this have to do with financial markets? Quite a lot

You’d think liberals could put at least half the anger they aim at Prop 8 supporters towards places like this, or Iran; places where they execute gay people.

Architectural Genius of Antoni Gaudi
sahara
by sahara  9-22-2009    1
Gaudí never saw the Sagrada Família finished. In fact no one has because, to this day, it’s still a work in progress. When Gaudí died in 1926, after being hit by a streetcar no less, the Sagrada Família had only just begun to show its potential. There’s only one way to describe the Sagrada Família, what was to be -- and one day will be -- Gaudí’s masterpiece: it’s a cathedral. It’s amazing to realize Gaudí did what he did at the turn of the last century, but it’s absolutely stunning when you realize that this architect’s masterpiece, if all goes as planned, will be finished in 2026. As Gaudí said it: “My client is not in a hurry.”

The Asshole Behind Prop 8: The Bishop of Oakland, CA
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  8-29-2009    3
We know all this because as homosexuals and their supporters were wondering how this all came about, Cordileone gloated about his work in an interview with an obscure Catholic radio network. He bragged about how gay men and lesbians never saw him coming & called gay marriage a Satanic plot by "the Evil One" to destroy morality in the modern world. Now, Cordileone's work has been rewarded, and the Vatican has made him the most important religious figure in the East Bay. Alameda County is one of the most liberal and gay-friendly parts of the world; it arguably has the most lesbian residents in the United States, & voters here rejected Proposition 8 by almost 62 percent. & the man who leads some 400,000 Catholics from his new Lake Merritt cathedral... just got done taking the right to marry from every gay man and woman in the East Bay. Dear Bishop Sal: fuck you. Quite sincerely, A married, het Oaklander.

Particularly famous for Antoni Gaudi's unique and radical style of architecture, Barcelona has also produced great artists of note. Among them Pablo Casals, Josep Carreras and Joan Miro whose work is celebrated in the park named after him. Pablo Picasso, although a native of Malaga, spent much time here and his works can be seen at the Picasso Museum northeast of the magnificent port.

Catholicism, interesting ideas. I wonder what they would have done with Jesus' body parts if they could've found him. Also interesting, that Romans were told to convert to Catholicism or be beheaded. This seems to have gone full circle.
