Cassini: Unlocking Saturn's Secrets
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-18-2009
Do explore the site, there are some wonderful videos. Also, they are talking about Cassini catching a "glint" caused by liquid on Titan. The liquid is NOT water. It's hydrocarbons. Imagine a moon with enough liquid fuel to form lakes on the surface! Examples of common hydrocarbons below: *..Methane and benzene *..Cylinders of Butane and Propane (LPG fuel). *..Gasoline at the gas station. *..Diesel fuel. *..Paraffin oil (for Heating, Oil lamps and Oil picnic stoves) *..Gas Oil (for Furnace fuel). *..IPA; Isopropyl alcohol (Rubbing Oil) from a Pharmacist (Chemists in the UK). *..Cigarette lighter fuel (Butane, or a type of gasoline). *..Candles (Heavy Hydrocarbon Paraffin wax). (Coal and wood also contain Hydrocarbon Compounds)

Breath-taking Photos Of The Universe From Nasa's "Astronomy Picture Of The Day"
ericgyoung
by ericgyoung  11-30-2009    2
If you like pictures, then check out Nasa's "Astronomy Picture Of The Day" site. These pictures are unbelievably beautiful. Each comes with a title and a brief explanation from an astronomer. As a result, this site is an incredible teaching tool as well. Finally, the site also has some "space art" to view. Enjoy!

Anomalous Trajectories

continues: As long ago as September 1998, however, the same enigmatic forces were also reported to be acting on the Ulysses spacecraft that is currently in a high orbit through the Solar System. In that case Ulysses demonstrated a sunward acceleration when radio signals from Earth bounced off a transponder onboard the solar observatory and indicated a Doppler shift in the frequency of the return transmission. The induced frequency shift was greater than could be affected by any known mechanism and no one in the conventional science community can yet account for it. More space probes are now being added to the mix. After examining telemetry from NEAR-Shoemaker (now resting on the surface of Asteroid Eros), the Galileo mission to Jupiter, Cassini-Huygens (one part each orbiting Saturn and the other resting on the surface of Titan), the Rosetta cometary probe and the MESSENGER mission to Mercury, a similar discrepancy has been detected.

Jupiter!
merrie
by merrie  12-19-2008
Jupiter (a.k.a. Jove; Greek Zeus) was the King of the Gods, the ruler of Olympus and the patron of the Roman state. Zeus was the son of Cronus (Saturn). Jupiter is the fourth brightest object in the sky (after the Sun, the Moon and Venus). It has been known since prehistoric times as a bright "wandering star". But in 1610 when Galileo first pointed a telescope at the sky he discovered Jupiter's four large moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto (now known as the Galilean moons) and recorded their motions back and forth around Jupiter. This was the first discovery of a center of motion not apparently centered on the Earth. It was a major point in favor of Copernicus's heliocentric theory of the motions of the planets (along with other new evidence from his telescope: the phases of Venus and the mountains on the Moon). Galileo's outspoken support of the Copernican theory got him in trouble with the Inquisition. http://www.nineplanets.org/jupiter.html

Electricity Found on Saturn Moon
cakebelly
by cakebelly  10-30-2008
continues: Morente's team studied data returned from the European Space Agency's Huygens probe, which broke away from NASA's Cassini spacecraft in 2005 to become the first probe to go below Titan's clouds. (Read "Voyage to Saturn" in National Geographic magazine.) As soon as the probe entered the moon's atmosphere, a strong wind tilted the device about 30 degrees. This accidental motion enabled Huygens to detect the Earthlike electrical resonances that it otherwise would have missed, which Morente and colleagues describe their study, published in a recent issue of the journal Icarus. Jeffrey Bada, of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, believes the process that allowed lightning to spark life on Earth is universal and could happen in many environments—including on Titan.
