POPSHealth Insurance Bankrupts Americans
A Harvard study found that 50 percent of all bankruptcy filings were partly the result of medical expenses. Every 30 seconds in the United States someone files for bankruptcy in the aftermath of a serious health problem. Consider the plight of David: David had to stop working as a truck driver after he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and has since been struggling to pay for COBRA during the two-year Medicare waiting period. His wife, Gloria, is his full-time caregiver and cannot work outside the home, and the couple has had to use much of their savings and borrow from friends and family to pay for their COBRA premiums. David cashed in his 401K at a 24 percent loss so that they will be able to continue to pay the COBRA premium until he is eligible for Medicare. Gloria tried to apply for Medicaid, but she learned that their income is too high. "There is not any help for people like us. We are not considered poor enough, but we don't have the money to pay it on our own," Gloria sa

POPSSomebodies and Nobodies: Understanding Rankism Examples of rankism based on pseudo rankings include the illicit hierarchies maintained by racism, sexism, ageism, classism, ableism, and heterosexualism (or, homophobia)--in short, the familiar isms that plague societies and that, one by one, are being discredited and dismantled. What can victims of rank abuse do to protect their dignity? Those abused on the basis of color unified against racism. Women targeted sexism and the elderly took aim at ageism. By analogy, "rankism" denotes abuses of power associated with rank. Once you have a name for it, you see it everywhere. More importantly, once you call it by name, everyone else will see it too, and perpetrators will find themselves on the defensive.

POPSSense of identity What researchers are finding is that there is no single “identity spot” in the brain. Instead, the brain uses several different neural regions, working closely together, to sustain and update the identities of self and others. Learning what makes identity, researchers say, will help doctors understand how some people preserve their identities in the face of creeping dementia, and how others are sometimes able to reconstitute one.

POPSExperts warn against long-term use of common pain pills More: The geriatrics society’s new guidelines say NSAIDs should be considered “rarely” in the population of frail elderly people, and used “with extreme caution” and then only in “highly selected individuals.” For those patients with moderate to severe pain that diminishes the quality of life, opiates may be considered, the guidelines suggest, after both the patient and caregiver are screened for prior substance abuse.

POPSchild abuse & silent witnesses Child abuse 'impacts stress gene' Child abuse has long-lasting effects Abuse in early childhood permanently alters how the brain reacts to stress, a Canadian study suggests. Analysis of brain tissue from adults who had committed suicide found key genetic changes in those who had suffered abuse as a child. It affects the production of a receptor known to be involved in stress responses, the researchers said. The Nature Neuroscience study underpins the impact of stress on early brain development, experts said. Previous research has shown that abuse in childhood is associated with an increased reaction to stressful circumstances. Whilst these results obviously need to be replicated, they provide a mechanism by which experiences early in life can have an effect on behaviour later in adulthood Dr Jonathan Mill But exactly how environmental factors interact with genes and contribute to depression or other mental disorders in adulthood is not well understood.

POPSCompany accused of exploiting disabled Just when I thought I had seen it all, I learn that some low-life (Kenneth J. Henry) has been making money off of the labor of mentally challenged individuals and making them live in deplorable conditions and charging them for it. This kind of exploitation really pisses me off. This person has no compassion for his fellow man. How can someone find peace in their life after treating another human being so shabbily?

POPSLotsa Helping Hands - coordinate caregiving, online, for free When illness or misfortune hits, friends and loved ones often want to help, but coordinating the help that's been offered and what needs to be done can seem overwhelming. This site offers free, online tools to help. Testimonial from one user : Yes, this has been a godsend for us. When I get home from the hospital, I just do one email to everyone. Then when I need help, I just put the date and the tasks and people sign up. This site has made dealing with my wife's cancer doable at all. (I, too, have a chronic, serious disease and can not do very much.) It has also been amazing to count all of our friends--and to give them the opportunity to help.
