sixchannels
by sixchannels  5-22-2009
sixchannels agrees with Ann Smarty's new post CAPTCHAs present a very controversial topic: you can’t do without them as a webmaster and you can’t stand them as a user.

15 of the Meanest CAPTCHAs ever
bruxedo
by bruxedo  5-21-2009
You've seen them all around the web, CAPTCHAs are those distorted images of letters and numbers used to prevent the automated use of websites. They are supposedely random, but sometimes they seem to be "telling you" something; others are just plain ridiculous or humanly impossible to read. Here's a collection of the strangest, most bizarre tests agains spam bots.

Spammers are hiring firms to defeat CAPTCHA's
dmtherob
by dmtherob  8-26-2008
You send the firm the CAPTCHA's and a real person solves it and send it back to the customer. Apparently the employee solving the puzzle only gets paid if the puzzle is: Solved correctly Solved within 60 seconds (even though the rule is under 20 seconds) The firm charges $1 for every 1,000 CAPTCHA's that you send. They also sell Gmail and Yahoo mail accounts in bulk

Strippers seduce humans in order to circumvent CAPTCHA
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  11-1-2007
This is a great example of a problem that is too difficult for current AI methods and depends on "real" intelligence to solve. Humans are plugged into the workflow to solve the problem just as you'd add another service to a pipeline. The innovative spirit is alive and well with spammers.

Making humans more computer
mbrandewinder
by mbrandewinder  7-25-2007
Last month's news... but still interesting; I like the twist: Von Anh turns the problem of making computers more human, into making humans more like computer. As long as it's entertaining, humans will do drone-like activities all day long, and collectively beat the biggest computer around...

reCAPTCHA - Digitizing Books One Word at a Time
patchworkthreads
by patchworkthreads  6-27-2007
"But if a computer can't read such a CAPTCHA, how does the system know the correct answer to the puzzle? Here's how: Each new word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is given to a user in conjunction with another word for which the answer is already known. The user is then asked to read both words. If they solve the one for which the answer is known, the system assumes their answer is correct for the new one. The system then gives the new image to a number of other people to determine, with higher confidence, whether the original answer was correct."
