POPSDeadly Drugs (Infomation is Beautiful) Last week, the government has sacked its most senior drugs advisor, Dr Professor Nutt, after he claimed cannabis was no more harmful than alcohol. And that horse-riding was riskier than taking ecstasy.

POPSReefer sanity In an act of merciful sanity, the Obama administration has made good on its promise to stop interfering with states that allow the medical use of marijuana. It's a good move, long overdue. But is it enough? Not quite.

POPSPot Legalization Gains Momentum In California More: But some legal scholars and policy analysts say the government will not be able to require California to help in enforcing the federal marijuana ban if the state legalizes the drug. Without assistance from the state's legions of narcotics officers, they say, federal agents could do little to curb marijuana in California. "Even though that federal ban is still in place and the federal government can enforce it, it doesn't mean the states have to follow suit," said Robert Mikos, a Vanderbilt University law professor who recently published a paper about the issue. Nothing can stop federal anti-drug agents from making marijuana arrests, even if Californians legalize pot, he said. However, the U.S. government cannot pass a law requiring local and state police, sheriff's departments or state narcotics enforcers to help. That is significant, because nearly all arrests for marijuana crimes are made at the state level. (Emph. mine)

POPSDrugs No Longer Sold to Tourists in Netherlands "All three parties, which the government of the Netherlands is formed of, also agree that it is necessary to prohibit the sale of drugs from cannabis to foreign tourists." Imagine that - drugs cause people to do stupid things, even rob or kill. Who would've guessed? I thought bong hits had miraculous health benefits and this war on drugs was stupid because getting stoned with your kids makes more sense.

POPSDutch cannabis coffee shops ban tourists In another unintended consequence, several border towns complain of the burdens associated with a weekly influx of tens of thousands of tourists, mainly Belgian, French and German. Among recent steps taken to deal with these problems, Amsterdam has said it would halve its number of coffee shops, citing criminality, while other cities are to close those within a certain radius of schools.

POPSWhen the economy goes to pot, Americans do the same The economy went up in smoke, so why not? Has to be legalised. Poor bloody cops will finish up chasing their tails when everyone starts dobbing in neighbours. Imagine all that paperwork. (Greenies can add this to the list of benefits from legalising it)
