POPSJive 3.0 Launches: But they don't offer Clogs! Sounds like a pretty robust platform (except for the polling piece...snoozola). Integrating bookmarking apps? Good idea, but If social productivity is what they're after, they need look no further than Amplify :)

POPSNorthwest Indiana LakeNET Just found this site today, the blogging links are extremely weak so most of the "5,000+" links are pretty weak old version web 1.0 sites from chamber lists. They do host not for profit websites, mainly due to their funding coming from State grant. My humble opinion is that the board needs some web 2.0 talent, some people that actually engage in social media. The site is pretty but not all that useful yet.

POPSIs Wordpress Doomed? Google buys self-hosted blogging software company. Yet again, Google buys another software suite in order to compete in a market that doesn't directly involve search engines or search related tools. I haven't quite made up my mind on whether this is good news or bad news. On one hand, more competition in the self-hosted blog software market is always a good thing and can only help make the tools we use better through that competition. On the other hand, while I realize that there is money to be made in this deal, doesn't anyone else think that Google is getting close to over-diversification with all their non search engine related purchases over the past several years?

POPSDocstoc: Clipmarks for Documents! I thought my title was better than their own description, "Youtube for documents". Their's is hype, mine is more accurate. This suggests also that Clipmarks programming could be applied to various fields in like manner, for various applications. I would like to see Clipmarks expand their capabilities like this so we could post or embed actual legal (legislative) briefs that could be scrolled right from a blog, making reading and reporting online a great deal easier, and pdf in particular easier to reference in a blog post. (A Firefox addon for pdf files to view as html also exists). (Just let me share if this idea becomes profitable!)

POPSGoogle Pulls the Plug in For Pay Video and Everybody Misses the Point Dvorak has it right in this column. This is a perfect example of why DEPENDING upon online services is folly. Time and time again you hear or read about how remote storage is the key to the future. Some people even want to get rid of hard drives altogether! It is ridiculous to depend on some remote computer to take care of your data. I would prefer to backup my data on to media which I have control of. I'll keep my 'obsolete' harddrives, cds, and other multiple forms of redundant backups. I'll laugh everytime I read about some poor schmuck who relied upon remote storage exclusively. And I'll laugh even harder at some REAL idiot who decided to rely upon a website to be there forever. If it isn't on your harddrive and or backed up to disk it may as well not exist when that oh-so-reliable remote computer goes offline permanently.

POPSA good way of distinguishing Web 1.0 versus Web 2.0 I'd like to see "bookmarks" added to the list under Web 1.0 and "clipmarks" added to the list under web 2.0. Inherant with the evolution of the web and the proliferation of content online is the need for a better way to manage it all.
