Tibetan Sky Burial - DO NOT LOOK!! if you are sensitive
boozich
by boozich  9-14-2009    4
believe that a person re-incarnates after dying the body serves no real purpose. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it, or nature may let it decompose. The body is cut in specific places, and left on a mountain top, exposing it to the elements. According to Buddhist teaching, this makes it easier for the soul of the deceased to move on from the uncertain plane between life and death onto the next life. So as barbaric as this might look, there is an actual purpose to this.

Ancient burial site discovered in northern Greece

cont: She said they arguably belonged to a Macedonian royal and were buried at the end of the 4th century B.C. But it is too early to speculate on the dead person's identity, pending tests to determine the bones' sex and age, said Saatsoglou-Paliadeli, a professor of classical archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She said one of the silver vessels is "very, very similar" to another found decades ago at a nearby royal tumulus, where one grave has been identified as belonging to Philip II. Alexander was one of the most successful generals of all times. In a series of battles against the Persian Empire, he conquered much of the known world, reaching as far as India. After his death in 323 B.C., at the age of 32, Alexander's empire broke up in a series of wars by his successors that saw the murder of his mother, half brother, wife and both sons.

Legion Of Terra-Cotta Mouseketeers Found Beneath Disney World

more (at source): "Very little is known about the early history of the Disney civilization, so this is quite a significant find," said lead archaeologist Dr. Robert Moore, adding that it may take years to fully explore the labyrinthine system of tunnels and pits that surround the burial chamber. "By analyzing the crude markings above the doorway to the tomb, we've concluded that it was likely constructed during the Pre-Eisnerian period, one of the bloodiest and most chaotic eras in the history of the Magic Kingdom."

The Sutton Hoo Treasure
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-25-2009    3
"Sutton Hoo, (grid reference TM288487) near Woodbridge, Suffolk, is an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and the site of an early 7th century ship burial. The ship-burial was discovered in 1939 and contained a wealth of artefacts. Sutton Hoo is of primary importance to early medieval historians because it sheds light on a period in English history that otherwise has little documented evidence remaining - it has been called "page one of English history". It is one of the most remarkable archaeological finds in England because of its age, size, far reaching connections, completeness, beauty, rarity and historical importance."

China: new warriors at terracotta army site
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-21-2009
more: Xu said the army officer was found lying on its stomach behind four chariots, and was largely intact compared with other newly-discovered warriors, according to Xinhua. “The original colors have faded after more than 2,000 years of decay, but a corner of the officer's robe suggested it was in colors other than the grey-ish clay,” he said. The latest excavation is the third in the site's largest pit — one of three open to the public — since 1974 when the army of terracotta warriors and horses was discovered by a peasant digging a well. Up to 5,000 more life-size figures are believed to still be buried in the pit and awaiting excavation. The Terracotta Army is one of the greatest archaeological finds of modern times, and was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1987.

more (at source): The state Office of Archaeology has excavated portions of the property and found hundreds of artifacts, from stone tools to evidence of a pit where cremated bodies were buried. Radiocarbon dating a method used to estimate the age of remains in an archaeological site places the time of two areas containing charcoal at 3,400 and 4,000 years ago. Representatives of the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequots tribes and the Native American Heritage Advisory Council have visited the site. The Archaeological Conservancy, a private, nonprofit organization that acquires and permanently preserves important archaeological sites across the United States, has looked at it. The conservancy publishes the quarterly magazine American Archaeology.

Carvings From Cherokee Script’s Dawn
cakebelly
by cakebelly  6-29-2009    3
more (at source): It may be, as is often noted, that his achievement is the only known instance of an individual’s single-handedly creating an entirely new system of writing. An archaeologist and explorer of caves has now found what he thinks are the earliest known examples of the Sequoyah syllabary. The characters are cut into the wall of a cave in southeastern Kentucky, a place sacred to the Cherokee as the traditional burial site of a revered chief. The archaeologist, Kenneth B. Tankersley of the University of Cincinnati, said in an interview recently that this was “one of the most fascinating and important finds in my career,” yielding likely insights into “the genius of Sequoyah.”

Lost Aztec tomb lies under Mexico City
cakebelly
by cakebelly  6-17-2009    4
more (at source): Since he uncovered a carved monolith of the ferocious earth deity Tlaltecuhtli in 2006, there has been intense speculation, based on historical writings and their own discoveries, that the four-metre-by-3.5-metre stone covers a royal tomb. The stone monolith is inscribed with dates and language associated with Ahuitzotl, a king who died in 1502. Radar indicates "anomalies" under the monolith, which could be funerary spaces. Though archeological finds in Mexico City date back to 1790, no one has ever found the burial site of an Aztec king. "Everyone wants us to dig faster," says Lopez, "and this is the only thing we cannot do.

Thomas Paine ~ Patriot And Philosopher
merrie
by merrie  3-20-2009
For this he was tried and convicted of treason in his homeland. Escaping to Paris, the philosopher became a member of the revolutionary National Convention. But during the Reign of Terror (1793-94) of revolutionary leader Maximilien Robespierre (1758-1794), Paine was imprisoned for being English. An American minister interceded on Paine's behalf, insisting that Paine was actually an American. Paine was released on this technicality. He remained in Paris until 1802, and then returned to the United States. Though he played an important role in the American Revolution by boosting the morale of the colonists, he nevertheless lived his final years as an outcast and in poverty.

Saxon burials excavated
yewtree
by yewtree  2-4-2009
Sometimes you have to excavate for fear of looting of the grave goods. Also, these burials shed more light on Saxon society and burial customs. Osteoarchaeology could be used to discover what they died of, and relate it to modern illnesses and epidemiology. With all of this data, these people's identity can be recovered to a certain extent, and they will be remembered.

'Cloud People' - more on the lost Peruvian city
cakebelly
by cakebelly  12-4-2008    1
continues: "We suspect that the ancient inhabitants used this as a lookout point from where they could spot potential enemies." The ruins were initially discovered by local people hacking through the jungle. They were drawn to the place due to the sound of a waterfall. The local people "armed with machetes opened a path that arrived at the place where they saw a beautiful panorama, full of flowers and fauna, as well as a waterfall, some 500 metres high," said the mayor of Jamalca, Ricardo Cabrera Bravo. Initial studies have found similarities between the new discovery and the Cloud Peoples' super fortress of Kulep, also in Utcubamba province, which is older and more extensive that the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, but has not been fully explored or restored. Little is known about the Chachapoya, except that they had been beaten into submission by the mighty Incas in 1475. When in 1535 the Spanish Conquistadores arrived in Peru, they found willing allies in the Cloud Peop
