New York’s Largest Mosque to Be Built Next To –- Ground Zero
merrie
by merrie  12-18-2009    3
The building has no sign that hints at its use as a Muslim prayer space, but these modest beginnings point to a far grander vision: an Islamic center near the city’s most hallowed piece of land that would stand as one of ground zero’s more unexpected and striking neighbors. Unreal. Lest We Forget I’m a history buff. There’s a constant struggle at our house over the remote control and whether we watch what my wife and kids want, or the Discovery, TLC, or the History Channel. I won’t go into who usually wins (ask Pam), but suffice it to say we’ve added several televisions in the house. My mom instilled in me my fascination with history long ago. I think it was her way of passing onto a son, growing up ten thousand miles away from his country and family, his heritage. Around the dinner table in the Philippines her stories of my grandparents and life on the farm during the Depression and World War 2 .....

JPMorgan Chase To Spend Millions on New Jets and Luxury Airport Hangar
ratilfar
by ratilfar  3-23-2009    2
Mike Dolphin, president of fixed-based operator Avitat Westchester, is fighting the bank's grand plans – because he says JPMorgan's proposed expansion would force his company out of the hangar the bank is eyeing. Westchester County, NY has recommended that the bank – a "high quality corporate citizen" – be awarded the lease to the hangar when it becomes available in April 2010, in part, because of how much money it is dedicating for the "construction of a state of the art "green building." But on March 11, the chairman of JPMorgan Chase, Jamie Dimon, said he could not understand why corporate America has such a bad image. "When I hear the constant vilification of corporate America I personally don't understand it," Dimon said. Dimon, whose 2008 compensation package, according to SEC documents, was worth more than $19 million in salary, stock and options, declined to speak with ABC News about the proposed plans.

Zionist Blood Diamonds - Lev Leviev
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  3-7-2009
West Bank Villages of Bil'in and Jayyous: Our villages, known worldwide for multi-year peaceful protest campaigns, supported by Israeli and international activists, to save our land, affirm that Leviev's settlements are destroying the olive groves and farms that have sustained our villages for centuries. The settlements of Maale Adumim and Har Homa, where Leviev's companies have recently built homes in violation of international law, are being built expressly to sever East Jerusalem from the West Bank, destroying any hopes for peace. Leviev has also financially supported the settler organization the Land Redemption Fund which has used highly dubious means to secure Palestinian land in villages including Bil'in and Jayyous for settlement expansion.

"Oxfam stated publicly that Leviev had never been an Oxfam donor, nor would they accept donations from any individual who constructs settlements in occupied territory in contravention of international humanitarian law. Twenty days after Adalah-NY raised the issue, an article which claimed that Leviev donated to Oxfam was finally removed from the news site belonging to an organization of which Leviev is the president."

I just clipped this 'cause: 1. I was born and raised in the Bronx (NY, NY). 2. My wife was a principal dancer in the Lido de Paris show at the Stardust Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas for 14 years. She was voted Showgirl of the Year twice; voting was done by her peers only: all showgirls/dancers in Vegas. She was the poster girl for the Lido show at the Stardust, with her picture on all the billboards as you enter Vegas on I-15. Her image was also on every slot and video poker machine in the Stardust. She cried the day the Stardust was imploded, even though it had been 16 years since she performed there. She and our daughter went to one of the final shows, and at the beginning, one long-time dancer (whom Jeannie had taught the routine to the girl when she was a rookie) stepped forward and shouted, "This one's for you, Jeannie (last name withheld)!" As line captain, Jeannie was responsible for training all the new girls the numbers and routines. Also, she got the girl a G-String,

NY'ers do understand what illegal immigration means
dl211
by dl211  12-1-2007
By trying to imply that New Yorkers do not know the difference between legal and illegal immigrants, Mr. Hung shows his ignorance of the subject and facts. How many of the 340,000 foreign-born that hold top jobs in New York worked in stone quarries, or held jobs cleaning New York's hotels and motels; and how many of the 35 percent doctors stated in the article, held landscaping jobs? The difference Mr. Hung does not get is that people in New York and across the United States know that this country was built by immigrants. They are welcome here as long as they come into this country the same way our forefathers did, legally and by not wanting to jump to the head of the line. It is the illegal immigrants who drain our health system, overtax our school systems, only to send their money out of the country. Yes, they are hard-working -- we understand that -- and, yes, they do jobs we Americans will not do for unfair pay so a employer can increase his or her bottom line.

if you have 'green' vehicles-you can park closer to the mall
ladalooop88845
by ladalooop88845  8-28-2007
this is, i guess, what is being proposed at one of the malls in syracuse, ny. now this is all that they are saying right now, but i'm wondering if you would get tickets if you parked in the 'special' places. it will bring a lot of controversy though, since the mall just lost about half their parking spaces that are right at the mall...now they are across the road..a busy road...and need a bus to travel from the parking lots to the mall. and because of this, there is a lot less parking available that people actually want, so it'll be interesting on how it will turn out.

Women as Property...with a wall?
jessiebg

Interesting article related to the hierarchies that prison reproduces (based on class discussion today), which mirror the systems of dominance and subordination in non-incarcerated society "at large." The class generally saw the "woman as property" issue relegated to history, but that the gender norms in prision were not so historically relegated....here's divorce court's take on modern gender hierarchies.
