POPSThe Penny Drops - but has Washington learned?
What took the might of the Soviet Empire, the erudition of the British Empire a generation to learn, has taken Washington seven years. You cannot impose on the disparate and clannish Afghan people ideals and “standards” which their history has continually rejected without fundamentally changing the entire ‘psyche’ of the Afghan people. The only people to make an impact on the Afghans were the Mongols and they did it by imposing the strict code or law of the Mongol Empire that was universal under their regime. It read, 1- No gods supersede the Emperor. 2- All gods are equal under the Emperor, down to about 10 when it read 'all emissaries to the Court of the Emperor are to have safe passage under threat of death to perpetrators'. The Mongols enforced their law by recruiting the savants and mandarins from within the conquered nations, supported by the most mobile and terrifying army ever seen on Earth. POPSTim O'Reilly - Seeing our culture with fresh eyes More: What will people think of our enormous steak dinners and obese portions of food? That's on the cusp of changing. What will they think of our profligate use of fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources? Our assumption that the American way of life will go on forever, just as it is, much as the British thought their empire would go on forever? What about our assumptions about unlimited technological progress? Will science fiction visions of star flight or "the Singularity" seem as quaint as "the White Man's Burden"? Above all, what will they think of the appalling amount of waste in our culture? Have you ever walked through a tourist area - say Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco - and seen entire stores devoted to schlock, made in developing countries by people who must scratch their heads in wonder at a people so wealthy that they can afford to spend money on things that are so utterly and obviously useless?

POPSWorld's First PoW Camp? more: Ben Robinson, an archaeologist at Peterborough Museum, has been working with the Channel 4 Time Team programme to uncover the site’s history. He said: “This is a fascinating and unique site because the concept of a ‘prisoner of war camp’ did not exist before Norman Cross was built in 1797. It was an inspired experiment in taking huge numbers of enemy troops out of action, but also keeping them in as humane conditions as possible.” Although the prisoners were generally treated well, more than 1,000 inmates died from typhoid in 1800 and 1801 and a total of 1,770 died during the camp’s 17-year history. The buildings were dismantled and the site cleared after Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

POPSObama Apologizes to Loyalists! We wonder why the President all of a sudden admits this. Why on Independence Day? Mr. Obama says anyone but the totally blind can see this. It is obvious, the President said. Will this have any consequences for the policies in American government? Of course not, the chief executive says. "The illusions and lack of distinction between the ruled and the rulers are what give us power. Now, we wouldn't want to take that away, would we?" Asked if not these presidential words would remove that illusion, Barack Obama said the people are mostly blind anyway. "They won't wake up!"

POPS Big Government and The 4th of July Layer after layer of new bureaucracies were imposed over every facet of life. "He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance," the Founding Fathers explain. Unfortunately, in our own time we have returned to a system of government controls and fiscal burdens that are far more oppressive than the ones our Founding Fathers revolted against. Those freedom-loving colonists rose up against a government that taxed a fraction of what the U.S. government plunders the American taxpayer, nowadays. And the intrusive hand of government in our personal, social and economic affairs is far more pervasive today than anything those American colonists faced 233 years ago when the Declaration of Independence was signed.

POPSUighurs imprisoned in Guantanamo since 2002: China dictating policy to the US ? These poor men, Muslims from China - unjustly imprisoned - GW Bush acknowledged this in 2003 - and now exiled with nothing but the clothes they stand up in. This is going to be an increasing common price of US debt - their debt holders will be able to dictate US foreign policy, or threaten to dump their bonds or demand payment, effectively destroying the US economy. Ironically this is the same tactic used by the US against the UK and France over the Suez conflict. They intended to fight Egypt over control of the Suez Canal, but the US said `get your military out of there, or else` . All troops were withdrawn within 2 weeks ! I heard on the radio today, that this was the exact moment when the British Empire died. Not a bad thing, of course; but China, the Saudis and oil producers hold most of the US debt - so look out world, there could be interesting times ahead :)

POPSOctopus and propaganda and octopus and... there are strange and beautiful sites out there, and some of them are interesting and very specific. The representation of the Octopus in propaganda and political cartoons, and influence on, or co-option of, popular culture. The intent behind Vulgar Army is to identify and criticise themes in the use of the octopus as a polemic metaphor, for example, its use as signifying 'action at a distance' or in dehumanising a group.

POPSSilvio Berlusconi faces calls to resign Silvio Berlusconi faced calls to resign yesterday when a judge ruled that David Mills, the British tax lawyer, had given false testimony at two corruption trials to protect the Italian Prime Minister and his business empire.

POPSRobin Cook: Last Honest UK Cabinet Member? Heroically, he resigned as 'Foreign Minister' in protest over the illegal 2003 invasion of Iraq. The UK army recently withdrew with little glory - very little - to engage in another fruitless excursion into Afghanistan - the one country that the British Empire NEVER subdued. Is there a lesson there for the US empire in its declining years as its army practises coitus interruptus - nearly out, not quite, but just as dangerous - in Iraq ? Robin Cook was certainly 'The Right Honourable'! Is there another?

POPSThe cost of US grown Islamic extremism to Afghanistan and Russia And what was the cost to Afghanistan itself? Today Afghanistan is in the grip of warlordism and terror. Human Rights Watch has described the atrocities:: “committed by gunmen and warlords who were propelled into power by the United States and its coalition partners after the Taliban fell in 2001″ and who have “essentially hijacked the country”. The report describes army and police troops controlled by the warlords kidnapping villagers with impunity and holding them for ransom in unofficial prisons; the widespread rape of women, girls and boys; routine extortion, robbery and arbitrary murder. This situation was created by deliberate policy by the United States and it is a price they still consider worth paying.

POPSPakistan follows US orders, now they will be paid In reality the situation is much more complex. The border between Pakistan and Afghanistan is taken somewhat lightly by long time natives to the region. Both sides of the border is dominated demographically by the Pashtun people. The border which was instated by the British Empire split this population in half between Afghanistan and Pakistan, and today the Pashtun people have no homeland.
