Brits suffer from metal theft
hayesstw
by hayesstw  Yesterday 5:27 AM
For a long time South Africans have suffered from metal theives. A few months ago we were without electricity for two days, not because of Eskom load shedding, but because of cable theft. Twenty years ago the aluminium railings were nicked from a railway bridge down the road, over four separate nights, and no one heard a thing. Cell phones have mitigated the inconvenience of telephone cable theft, but it can still disrupt Internet access. And many have been late for work because of the theft of railway signal cables. Now, it seems, the Brits are suffering from the same problem. Will it rile up even the phlegmatic Brits so much that they'll start burning railway carriages and stations when the trains are late?

Osama Bin Laden Suspect 'We Can't Kick Out' Is Freed
merrie
by merrie  7-7-2008
U was arrested trying to fly out to Saudi Arabia on false passports and was due to be extradited to America before US prosecutors dropped the case. Judges at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission have ruled there were "credible grounds" for believing MI5's claims. The conditions are being kept top secret but MI5 and police successfully argued he should not be allowed to live in London. The town in which he lives and any details which could lead to him being identified are also being kept secret. U will have to wear an electronic tag and is banned from using the internet or a mobile phone after refusing to turn his back on extremism.

Sniffer Dogs To Wear ‘Muslim’ Bootees
merrie
by merrie  7-6-2008    1
Where Muslims object, officers will be obliged to use sniffer dogs only in exceptional cases. Where dogs are used, they will have to wear bootees with rubber soles. “We are trying to ensure that police forces are aware of sensitivities that people can have with the dogs to make sure they are not going against any religious or cultural element within people’s homes. It is being addressed and forces are working towards doing it,” Acpo (Association of Chief Police Officers) said. John Midgley, co-founder of the Campaign Against Political Correctness, said: “The police are in effect being overly sensitive to potential criminals and not being sensitive enough to the public at large who need to be protected. These sort of things have a counter-productive effect because they cause huge friction between different communities.” Caroline Kisko, of the Kennel Club, said: “We would not condone any attempt to make search dogs wear special clothing, which could cause them distress.”

In 1986, more than 250 sailing ships and the United States' biggest fireworks display honored the Statue of Liberty in its 100th birthday year. In 1994, French forces in Rwanda established a security zone for refugees. In 1995, the British Parliament reconfirmed John Majors as prime minister. In 1997, NASA's Pathfinder landed on Mars to become the first U.S. spacecraft to land on the planet in more than two decades. Also in 1997, Mexico's top drug lord died in a Mexico City hospital following plastic surgery to change his appearance.

Why Canada is the best haven from climate change
Socratoad
by Socratoad  7-4-2008    5
As might be expected, developed nations score best. Canada is top, followed by Ireland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The United Kingdom is in 12th position, just behind the US. The surprise in the top 20 is Uruguay, which is listed ninth, and the only well-placed nation not to be in the club of countries which are rich, or Western (and usually both).

Johann Hari: Science is thrilling – except in our schools
tabsey
by tabsey  7-4-2008
At Primary School level, often teachers teach little science as this is often hands on, and they keep the messy lesson for art. Also, some teachers at this level just are not science people, forcing themselves to be proficient at maths in stead. I pushed early on for teachers to move from class to class teaching from their area of expertise. Attitudes became more positive.
