POPSA foreigner hopes to revive Japan's flagging spirits "Philip loves sake, but he also loves Japanese traditional culture," says Hiroshi Ujita, a Kyoto brewery owner. "His character is almost Japanese. He understands the Japanese way of thinking, our style of daily life. You can taste it in his sake." Harper has also become something akin to the great white hope for sake: Sales of sake, once the nation's favorite drink, have plummeted here. It's been written off as "an old man's drink" as younger consumers turn to beverages such as beer, whiskey and shochu, a fiery local spirit.

POPSNew, improved bartenders can be quite old-fashioned: 8 bartending philosophies They give a couple of shouts-out to the Bay Area: Daniel Hyatt at the Alembic Bar in San Francisco…The movement is at its fullest flower on the West Coast, with its 12-month growing season… At Cyrus in Healdsburg, Calif., Scott Beattie’s Meyer Beautiful incorporates Charbay Meyer lemon vodka.… Martin Cate’s Forbidden Island in Alameda, Calif., offers a Don the Beachcomber formula called the Nui Nui, with fresh citrus, pimento liqueur, cinnamon and vanilla syrups, and aged Barbados rum. I live less than four miles from Forbidden Island – less than three, as the crow flies (or goose swims). How is it that I've never tried a Nui Nui? It sounds tasty!

POPSThis is Coffee (1961) About 1960 maby earlier, “Coffee brewers institute” offered classes in coffee brewing. I was nite mgr. at Hodys resturant, n.w. corner Hollywood & vine in Hollywood, Ca. Upon completion of instruction, we were awarded a 1/2 gold colored coffee cup and hung it over the entrance to the bar. Tap water should be fit to drink. Never boiled or perked. 210 degrees. No more. Fresh coffee in a can or bag is near unattainable unless you find fresh roasted beans & grind ‘em yourself. To test, take a pinch of coffee and roll it between thumb and forefinger. You should feel the oil. Second test, place a hot cup of coffee across the table and you can see a thin film of oil on the surface.

POPSHistory Is Repeating, When Will the Masses Wake Up? "At the present time, behind the scenes there is a night-and-day movement of collateral. A visiting Englishman leaving the United States a few weeks ago said things would look better here after "they cleaned up the mess at Washington." Cleaning up the mess consists of fooling the people and making them pay a second time for the bad foreign investments of the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Banks. It consists of moving that heavy load of dubious and worthless foreign paper — the bills of wig makers, brewers, distillers, narcotic drug vendors, munition makers, illegal finance drafts, and worthless foreign securities — out of the banks, and putting it on the back of American labor. That is what the Reconstruction Finance Corporation is doing now. They talk about loans to banks and railroads." ...
