Language Without Numbers: Amazonian Tribe Has No Word To Express 'One,' Other Numbers
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-15-2008    2
However, the MIT team decided to add a new twist--they started with 10 objects and asked the tribe members to count down. In that experiment, the tribe members used the word previously thought to mean "two" when as many as five or six objects were present, and they used the word for "one" for any quantity between one and four. This indicates that "these aren't counting numbers at all," said Gibson. "They're signifying relative quantities." He said this type of counting strategy has never been observed before, although it may also be found in other languages believed to have "one," "two," and "many" counting words.

Common Wealth: Sustainable future
egsnyder
by egsnyder  7-13-2008
We are in one another's faces as never before, crowded into an interconnected society of global trade, migration, ideas and, yes, risk of pandemic diseases, terrorism, refugee movements and conflict. We also face a momentous choice. Continue on our current course, and the world is likely to experience growing conflicts between haves and have-nots, intensifying environmental catastrophes and downturns in living standards caused by interlocking crises of energy, water, food and violent conflict. Yet for a small annual investment of world income, undertaken cooperatively across the world, our generation can harness new technologies for clean energy, reliable food supplies, disease control and the end of extreme poverty.

How The Greens Captured Energy Policy
merrie
by merrie  7-11-2008
Other aspects of the Green argument have also collapsed. New discoveries off Brazil and in the Gulf of Mexico have nearly doubled international oil reserves, pushing backwards from the "peak oil" date. And global warming, that notorious by-product of "oil addiction," has faded to the point that its advocates are now reduced to threatening dissenters with prison. It has gone almost completely unacknowledged that with oil shale, offshore deposits, and new resources such as the hydrocarbon sludge deposits off B.C. and Alaska, the OPEC of the late 21st century is going to be right here. That's a goal worth working toward. Breaking the power of the Greens is yet another possible benefit. Energy reform is an egg and rock situation for the Democrats. From the old Irish proverb: "When the rock hits the egg, alas for the egg. When the egg hits the rock, alas for the egg."

Crystal skulls in British, US Museums Are Fakes
revenantdm
by revenantdm  7-9-2008
Indiana Jones would have probably taken as a fool by these as the British Museum Skull was bought 127 years ago and the Smithsonian was bought in 1960. If some of the best scientists, archaeologists, and anthropologists were fooled by the fakes, could have anyone ever have accidentally discovered the deception with only a cursory look? The Legend of the Crystal Skulls and their curse (or blessing - see story) have circulated for decades... nothing like true modern technology and skepticism to ruin a great myth of the paranormal!
