Energy Crisis Postponed: New Gas Rescues The World
merrie
by merrie  10-12-2009    3
Tony Hayward, BP's chief executive, said proven natural gas reserves around the world have risen to 1.2 trillion barrels of oil equivalent, enough for 60 years' supply " and rising fast. "There has been a revolution in the gas fields of North America. Reserve estimates are rising sharply as technology unlocks unconventional resources," he said. "The common wisdom was that unconventional gas was too difficult, too expensive and too demanding," he said, according to Petroleum Economist. "This has changed. If we ever doubted that gas was the fuel of the future " in many ways there's the answer." The breakthrough has been to combine 3-D seismic imaging with new technologies to free "tight gas" by smashing rocks, known as hydro-fracturing or "fracking" in the trade. The US is leading the charge. Operations in Pennsylvania and Texas have already been sufficient to cut US imports of liquefied natural gas (LGN) from Trinidad and Qatar to almost nil,

Energy crisis is postponed as new gas rescues the world

"The common wisdom was that unconventional gas was too difficult, too expensive and too demanding," he said, according to Petroleum Economist. "This has changed. If we ever doubted that gas was the fuel of the future – in many ways there's the answer." The breakthrough has been to combine 3-D seismic imaging with new technologies to free "tight gas" by smashing rocks, known as hydro-fracturing or "fracking" in the trade. The US is leading the charge. Operations in Pennsylvania and Texas have already been sufficient to cut US imports of liquefied natural gas (LGN) from Trinidad and Qatar to almost nil, with knock-on effects for the global gas market – and crude oil. It is one reason why spot prices for some LNG deliveries have dropped to 50pc of pipeline contracts. We may soon be looking at an era when gas, wind and solar power, combined with a smarter grid and a switch to electric cars returns the country to near energy self-sufficiency.

Lockerbie, The Anger
merrie
by merrie  9-6-2009    1
Jack Straw, the justice secretary, revealed this decision in a letter to his Scottish counterpart. He cited “wider negotiations” and the “overwhelming interests of the United Kingdom”. Sources in the UK and Tripoli said last week that those wider interests included BP’s hoped-for share of Libya’s untapped oil and gas reserves. The decision to include Megrahi in the prisoner transfer arrangement was seen by Libyan officials as paving the way for his release " and BP’s much-coveted deal was finally ratified." -more So tell me. Are you surprised?

UK Minister: Oil Deal Influenced Lockerbie Bomber Release
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  9-5-2009
The conservative "we never do wrong," UK Daily Telegraph says these accusations come from "domestic opponents," of the British government. But Mr. Straw is the government's Justice Secretary. And oil giant British Petroleum admits to lobbying for prisoner releases to help it get oil contracts. The cover story was this prisoner release was for "compassion," -- now it appears from inside and reliable sources it was more for oil. Sort of like fighting wars for 'freedom and democracy," but it's all about oil. Well...maybe they'll have a secret inquiry and get it all sorted out.

Is Lockerbie Gordon Brown’s Watergate?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  8-30-2009
The Lockerbie affair is an ugly can of worms that is slowly opening up. Is the Lockerbie scandal big enough to force an early exit by Gordon Brown, or at the very least the resignation of senior government ministers? Definitely. If it turns out that Brown or his ministers have deliberately misled the British public over the matter, it could prove to be a Watergate moment for the Prime Minister and force him to step down or spark a leadership challenge within the Labour Party. Oil Companies Undermining Climate Partnership
brightlight4
by brightlight4  8-27-2009    5
Some of the oil companies that joined the partnership are taking part in an oil industry campaign against the climate change bill in Congress. The campaign features public rallies against the bill in places such as Houston and Greensboro, N.C., coordinated by the industry's main lobbying group, the American Petroleum Institute. The rallies are designed to look like grassroots affairs. But an e-mail from the institute to oil company executives outlining the campaign and asking them to participate was leaked to Greenpeace, which released it to the public. ConocoPhillips, a member of the climate change partnership, posted a note on its Web site encouraging people to go. BP, another partnership member, told employees about the rallies but did not encourage them to attend, according to a company spokesman. As a result, observers wonder whether the partnership could lose some of its effectiveness, just as the debate over global warming legislation moves to a critical stage. "It's

Tony Blair, British Petroleum And The Lockerbie Deal
merrie
by merrie  8-25-2009    2
He put compassion for the oil industry ahead of any compassion for my daughter, for the families of all those people killed by a convicted mass murderer and terrorist. It just shows that the power of oil money counts for more than justice.' It sure does. Khadaffi paid out about $1.5 billion in compensation to the victims of the Lockerbie bombing - and then got most of it back in exchange for a deal allowing access to Libya's oil. With the freeing of al-Megrahi, and probably the non-prosecution of whomever it was that fired that shot from inside the Libyan embassy in London that murdered policewoman Yvonne Fletcher while she was patrollingin front of it in 1984, the deal's complete. I think blood money is a pretty appropriate term. And if you look at how al-Megrahi was received back home in Libya as a hero and role model , I can almost guarantee you that there will be a further cost to this whole endeavor in the future. Tea Party right-wing Republicans have been doing the same thing in the non-debate about healthcare. I guess they all think we are just stupid - grin - now where did they get that idea?

Russia Charges US Is Rearming Georgia
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  8-5-2009
This is abut the USA, Israel and the West trying to get oil and gas from the Caspian Sea. Georgia is critical for the pipeline. Amazingly, the Georgian Defense Minister is an Israeli (!) and an Israeli general is a prime advisor to their Georgian Army and was involved in starting last year's war. U.S. troops also there, on the ground; and NATO as well, even though Georgia is not in NATO but the West is trying to get it in. This headline is made at the same time, the same day, that Russian nuke subs are reported off the East Coast of the USA, the Cold War quickly being microwaved reheated. I think we should BUY and oil and natural gas we need and invest and develop more alternative energy and our own oil reserves if we have to. I hope we don't have to listen to any more propaganda about fighting for "peace and democracy," or twist it around to make it sound like Russia is the aggressor (on it's own border, while we're 12,000 miles from home) It's another war for B

More U.S. Weapons to Republic of Georgia?

The Caspian Sea contains the largest know reserves of Oil and natural gas. Those of us who think stealing and exploiting natural resources think this is the reason for U.S. & Israeli military support of Georgia...and the reason for Russia pushing back against Georgia recent failed attempt at expansion. Expansion? -- Expansion to consolidate it's drip on Caspian Sea oil. Expansion for the BTC pipeline (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Baku_pipelines.svg) This has routes that would take the greatest reserves of oil and natural gas in the world from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea and to the EU/NATO countries. Also it goes through Turkey to the Mediterranean for export. Formerly all this oil and natural gas belonged to the Soviet Union. The final major part of this plan is an underwater Israeli-Turkish pipeline to the Israeli port of Ashkelon. For more info, contact British Petroleum's (BP) CEO, Lord Browne. World Oil Reserves Fell for First Time in 10 Years, BP Says
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  6-10-2009
The reserves may or may not be there. Everyone knows that the Saudi Arabia's and the other Gulf States figures are as opaque as they are suspect. And that hundreds of thousands of square miles of the Canadian boreal forest will be turned into a wasteland if these "reserves" are ever to be tapped. What people forget is that the price of oil can never be higher than people can afford to pay which means it is bound to come down as people have to reign in their spending, making exploration and ecocide "uneconomic".

Greenwash of the Week: BP-Not Exactly Beyond Petroleum
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  4-16-2009
Don’t be fooled by any corporation rebranding themselves as environmentally friendly. An oil company in particular cannot possibly be ecologically sound. Dig deeper to find out how they damage the environment, especially overseas. Don’t allow them to think that we are stupid enough to believe whatever they tell us. As long as BP operates dirty facilities such as the Texas City refinery, the company’s sunburst logo, its purported earth-friendly values and its claim of going beyond petroleum will be nothing more than blatant greenwashing. If they have to spend money to get us to believe something about themselves then that should be a red flag that they are misrepresenting themselves. That old adage about lawyers fits in real well here: How do you know when a lawyer (corporation) is lying? When they open their mouths.

Shame Canada, Shame, Alberta.
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  3-1-2009    4
The Co-operative Bank will announce today that it is to fund a legal challenge by the Beaver Lake Cree Nation, which claims the boom in tar sands extraction is destroying their hunting and fishing lands. The court challenge calls for an injunction to stop more than 16,000 permits issued by the Alberta state government and, if successful, could dramatically reduce or even stop what has been described as a modern day "gold rush" for the oil, spurred by the expectation of high long-term oil prices. Last year the International Energy Agency estimated that the amount of oil in tar sands and other "unconventional" sources, especially in Canada and Venezuela, was 1-2tn barrels, only slightly less than the remaining conventional oil sources. Companies involved include Shell, BP, ConocoPhillips and Total.

Consider, for example, how much “fragile” environment would be disturbed by T. Boone Pickens’ plan to build the largest wind farm in the world on 400,000 acres in the Texas panhandle. While the Greens say they support Pickens’ effort, in what way is the Texas panhandle less fragile than the Utah desert? Last spring, the BLM placed a moratorium on solar power projects to be built on public lands, pending environmental impact studies. The necessary transmission lines and water use might disturb the native vegetation and wildlife, says the BLM. But the solar power industry screamed bloody murder and the moratorium was soon rescinded. Given that the Greens oppose oil and gas drilling everywhere, the rest of us -- especially congressional Republicans --
