The Hole at the Heart of Our Strategy ~ Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2009    1
...to the “noble” “heroism” of suicide bombers and, indeed, objectively supporting the other side in an active war is to be regarded as just some kind of alternative lifestyle that adds to the general vibrancy of the base. Since 9/11, we have, as the Twitterers recommend, judged people by their actions " flying planes into skyscrapers, blowing themselves up in Bali nightclubs or London Tube trains, planting IEDs by the roadside in Baghdad or Tikrit. And on the whole we’re effective at responding with action of our own " taking out training camps in Afghanistan, rolling up insurgency networks in Fallujah and Ramadi, intercepting terror plots in London and Toronto and Dearborn. But we’re scrupulously non-judgmental about the ideology that drives a man to fly into a building or self-detonate on the subway, and thus we have a hole at the heart of our strategy. We use rhetorical conveniences like “radical Islam” or, if that seems a wee bit Islamophobic .......

The Victims of Fort Hood
merrie
by merrie  11-8-2009    1
According to an officer who served with him at Walter Reed Hospital, Hasan spoke approvingly of the shooting of Army recruiters this past summer by a Muslim convert in Little Rock, Arkansas. Authorities also investigated Hasan as long as six months ago for internet postings discussing suicide bombings and other attacks, though they have not yet determined definitively if he was the author of those posts. One of those posts was a blog entry that deified suicide bombers as being similar to soldiers who throw themselves on hand grenades in order to save the lives of their fellow soldiers. A cousin, Nader Hasan, builds a picture of the shooter as a bullied Muslim who was a good person who did not even like weapons, was conflicted about his military service, and was against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. But postings that are thought to be Major Hasan’s don’t match the portrait of a soldier who was conflicted. They present us with a picture of someone who housed beliefs that

Ft. Hood suspect reportedly shouted `Allahu Akbar'
billpar
by billpar  11-6-2009    1
At least six months ago, Hasan came to the attention of law enforcement officials because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats, including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades. Investigators had not determined for certain whether Hasan was the author of the posting, and a formal investigation had not been opened before the shooting, said law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the case. The FBI, local police and other agencies searched Hasan's apartment Thursday night after evacuating the complex in Killeen, said city spokeswoman Hilary Shine. She referred questions about what was found to the FBI. The FBI in Dallas referred questions to a spokesman who was not immediately available early Friday morning.

The Iran Attack Plan
merrie
by merrie  9-27-2009    2
Israel would have to contend with the fact that it has consistently had a "red light" from both the Bush and Obama administrations opposing such strikes. Any strike that overflew Arab territory or attacked a fellow Islamic state would stir the ire of neighboring Arab states, as well as Russia, China and several European states. No one knows what specialized weapons Israel may have developed on its own, but Israeli intelligence has probably given Israel good access to U.S., European, and Russian designs for more advanced weapons than the GBU-28. Therefore, the odds are that Israel can have a serious impact on Iran's three most visible nuclear targets and possibly delay Iran's efforts for several years. The story is very different, however, when it comes to destroying the full range of Iranian capabilities. There are no meaningful unclassified estimates of Iran's total mix of nuclear facilities, but known unclassified research, reactor, and centrifuge facilities number . . .

Netanyahu's speech / Cheapening the Holocaust
ratilfar
by ratilfar  9-25-2009    1
And if we can compare a poorly equipped terrorist organization to the horrific Nazi killing machine, why should others not compare the Nazis' behavior to that of Israel Defense Forces soldiers? In both cases, the comparison is baseless and infuriating. Netanyahu began the speech as if he were chairman of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial - Holocaust, Holocaust, Holocaust; his family and his wife's family. Then he spoke in Shimon Peres' terms, proposing a "rosy future" to humanity. No less demagogic was his attack on the Iranian regime. They shoot demonstrators there, he protested vehemently. As if they don't do that in our Bil'in and Na'alin. Then came the kicker: Operation Cast Lead was a pinpoint attack. Israel telephoned thousands of people to tell them to leave their homes. Where to, Mr. Prime Minister? Into the sea? He said the IDF, which killed nearly 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, exhibited unprecedented restraint.

Howl of the unhinged is scary voice of America's "culture war"
Lexica
by Lexica  9-21-2009    2
More: The report provides troubling context for the outrageous behavior that has attended the election of our first African-American president. When you call them on that behavior, Barack Obama's detractors love to accuse you of equating dissent with racism. It is a specious argument. I disagree with the president's use of signing statements… but it would never occur to me to carry a sign vowing death to him, his wife and their "two stupid kids" as a protester in Maryland did, or to pray that Obama dies of brain cancer as a "minister" in Arizona does, or to heckle him during a joint session of Congress as Rep. Joe Wilson infamously did. That's not dissent. It is the howl of the unhinged and the entitled. The same folks who were complacent as President Bush spent surplus into deficit, wasted $600 billion dollars and 4,000 American lives on the wrong war, and watched a major American city drown are morally outraged because the new guy wants to reform health care?

There, they were bound with duct tape and placed inside a car that had been wired with explosives and doused in petrol. Their captors sprayed chloroform into their hoods and abruptly departed. The men, who have never been charged with any crime, were left waiting to be blown to bits. It is usual for the security forces to claim that terrorist bombers have inadvertently triggered their device before they were able to plant it. On this occasion, however, Butayev and his friend Islam Askerov, 21, were not rendered helpless by the chloroform. They freed themselves, removed the explosives and placed them in a nearby field. But they were unable to wake the rest of the group before the death squad returned. They fled, leaving Butayev’s 22-year-old brother Artur and the other two behind. Days later, the three men were found dead at another spot, their bodies charred. The survivors are still hiding.

Religion is not the primary motivation of suicide bombers
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  9-13-2009
Whether through sloppy thinking, laziness, or outright racism, Imperial powers love to dismiss local resistance to foreign domination as either "drug-crazed" or "religious fanatics", sometimes both. Because then you don't have to take a close look at their motivations and ask "Why are they pissed off enough to do something like this? Why specifically are they targeting us ? What would I have to be put through to feel like a suicide bombing was a reasonable thing to do? "Oh wait, they're just a bunch of religious nutbags? Great, now we can unleash death an destruction on them and their society knowing that they're unreasoning fanatics, and not people with a legitimate beef. "Nice to know we're still the good guys who never start a fight but always finish it. We're kind of attached to that myth, and it would cause a lot of national distress and heartache if we had to question the reality of that. "Good thing they're just religious crazies."

"Please pray for us" A Sobering Letter From Kabul
JackieDel
by JackieDel  8-26-2009
We currently have 68 women and 12 children in the Kabul shelter and 32 women and 4 children in the Mazar shelter. Last night the police called us and referred 2 new cases to us. We have tried to ensure the participation of women in the elections. We have helped many women (our clients who are living at home rather than in our shelters) get registered to vote. I have also encouraged our staff to vote on election day. We cannot take the women from the shelter to vote on election day. It will simply be too dangerous. Also I don't want people in the neighborhood to find out that a lot of women are living in one house. I will try and send another update soon. Thank you all for caring about this beleaguered country and it's women and girls. Please pray for us during these terrifying days. Manizha Naderi Executive Director, Women for Afghan Women

We have the technology now, to make it unnecessary for any one who doesn't want to, to have to work. We could feed the world forever with the cost of ONE stealth bomber.. We could send every college aged student in America through college.. room and board and tuition with the cost of ONE stealth bomber. So why don't we? Big business is too busy lining their profits making stealth bombers, Abrams tanks, helicoptors, etc. We have the technology for electric cars. Nikola Tesla invented electric power that could be sent out like radio waves. Free. But big business killed that. Why? They couldn't meter it and charge for it. Make executive pay in private industry sensible and reasonable. Stop excessive and ruinous profits.. e.g., gas prices, pharmaceutical prices, real estate prices, etc. Roll back prices to 1949 levels and freeze them there. Make all wages sufficient for everyone to be able to have a nice car, a nice home, a good vacation every year. Not ju

The explosion was the first major attack in Kabul since February, when eight Taliban suicide bombers struck three government buildings, killing 20 people. The new attack was clearly aimed at the heart of the Western presence in the capital. The Nato headquarters – where the US military commander, General Stanley McChrystal, is based – is next to the US Embassy in the same street as the presidential palace and Afghanistan's transport ministry.

Dr. Warren Hern is the head of the Boulder Abortion Clinic, and one of the last doctors in America who still performs late-term abortions . He's lived with death-threats & actual attempts on his life for decades. And the same violent rhetoric from the anti-abortion fringe that spawned a series of homegrown American terrorist snipers and bombers that have killed people and destroyed property is being turned on proponents of healthcare reform in America. Think about it.

The economic focus and domestic health care agenda ensures this all goes unnoticed too even though IT IS COSTING AMERICANS BILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND BLOOD. This is not a war of self-defense, but continued regime-change for a new middle east, entirely consistent with the neoconservative agenda of the Bush administration. THIS IS OBAMA'S IRAQ AND VIET NAM.

Russian nuke subs off USA East Coast

It seems the USA's non-stop lifetime of foreign wars and aggression is getting some push back. With impunity the USA sails nuke subs and aircraft carriers on the coast of Iran and Iraq...did the same in Vietnam....then blames the natives when they get "restless." We're also building a missile base in Poland, on the Russian border. We got troops and funding for the Republic of Georgia...we're trying to get to the world's largest reserve of gas and oil, in the Caspian Sea. If you go into a bear's cave, imo, and start poking around, we shouldn't be surprise if the beast becomes upset. I think this...along with the renewed air flights of nuke weapons bombers near the USA...and Russian making alliances in South America...shows a new Cold War has started: Cold War Two. Or Cold War Reheated. Or we're on 'pre-heat," for the baking up of new tensions. I'd suggest we BUY any oil and gas we might need and give up trying to steal it...and make progress with alternative energi

Teenage bombers are rescued from Taleban suicide training camps
infidel70
by infidel70  7-27-2009    3
The Army believes that between 1,200 to 1,500 boys as young as 11 who were trained in Swat to become suicide bombers were recruited after the Pakistani Government signed a peace deal with the Taleban in February, handing over control of the valley to the militants. The agreement broke down after the Taleban started advancing on Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, which led to a military offensive that has all but driven the militants from the region. The boys were rescued after the Taleban were forced to abandon their camps. Many are still missing, however, having been sold to militants in other areas.
