POPSOverconsumption? Ecological Debt? We are literally eating ourselves out of house and home. World Wildlife Fund presented this write up to show how the world’s current consumption habit is leading towards ecological collapse. Can this trend be changed? Yes. We can all do our part by living within our means. It's not about depriving ourselves but practicing responsible consumption. POPSImagine a World Without Fish Quotes from the Makers of the Film We must stop thinking of our oceans as a food factory and realize that they thrive as a huge and complex marine environment. We must act now to protect the sea from rampant overfishing so that there will be fish in the sea for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. -- Charles Clover, the book's author Overfishing is the great environmental disaster that people haven't heard about." A recent global conference about bluefin tuna stocks saw almost no media coverage in the U.S. We hope this film really sounds the alarm. We can fix this problem starting right now. -- Producer George Duffield Reading the book The End of the Line changed my life and what I eat. POPSMitsubishi makes bid for "most evil corporation around" title Because when you look at the prospect of imminent species extinction, OF COURSE your first thought is "hey, I can make money off this!" More: Fish stocks across the world are in retreat because of over-fishing. One study suggests oceans will be stripped clean of all fish by 2048. Bluefin is imminently at risk of commercial extinction. The wildlife charity WWF forecasts that breeding stocks of the fish that migrate from the Atlantic to spawn will be wiped out in the Mediterranean by 2012… conservationists suspect the actual catch is 60,000 tonnes, four times the maximum that marine scientists recommend. After studying catches and sales, Charles Clover, the environmental journalist behind the film The End of the Line, believes that businesses involved in the ransacking are deep-freezing 20,000 tonnes of bluefin a year for later use…

POPSOverfishing to Wipe out Bluefin Tuna in 3 Years: WWF
Bad news for tuna...I was a tuna fisherman in Hawaii in the '70s-80s and saw the fishery depleted by the Japanese longliners and trawlers.... "Mediterranean (Atlantic) bluefin tuna is collapsing as we speak and yet the fishery will kick off again tomorrow for business as usual. It is absurd and inexcusable to open a fishing season when stocks of the target species are collapsing," added Tudela. Environmental groups condemned an agreement signed in November by states setting bluefin quotas -- a body dominated by EU members. The groups called it "a disaster" and "a disgrace," saying the states again chose to ignore their own scientists and set quotas 47 percent higher than recommended. Illegal fishing is also rife for the bluefin, the dried, dark red meat of which once fed Roman armies on the march. Growing numbers of restaurants and retailers including Carrefour's Italian supermarkets are boycotting it. WWF said that analysis of official data showed the average size of matu

POPSOverfishing takes toll on Bluefin tuna I love fishing. Some of the most enjoyable time spent on earth has been fishing. I hate to see the extinction of any animals but when I read recently that stocks were estimated to be at 3% of the levels they were 50 years ago I was floored. This blog is mainly about marijuana reform but its also about activism. This one is close to my heart.
