Report: smoking bans protect nonsmokers from heart attacks
Lexica
by Lexica  10-15-2009
More: While heavier exposure to secondhand smoke is worse, there's no safe level…even less than an hour's exposure might be enough to push someone already at risk of a heart attack over the edge. That's because within minutes, the smoke's pollution-like small particles and other substances can start constricting blood vessels and increasing blood's propensity to clot — key heart attack factors. Yet many people don't know they have heart disease until their first heart attack, making it important for everyone to avoid secondhand smoke, Benowitz said. "Even if you think you're perfectly healthy, secondhand smoke could be a potential threat to you," he said. Many of the IOM committee members initially were skeptical they'd find much benefit from the bans, said statistician Stephen Feinberg of Carnegie Mellon University. He proclaimed himself "the resident skeptic" who changed his mind. "There was a clear and consistent effect of smoking bans," he said.

What Is Angina?
Socratoad
by Socratoad  9-22-2009
Overview It's thought that nearly 7 million people in the United States suffer from angina. About 400,000 patients go to their doctors with new cases of angina every year. Angina occurs equally in men and women. It can be a sign of heart disease, even when initial tests don't show evidence of CAD. Not all chest pain or discomfort is angina. A heart attack, lung problems (such as an infection or a blood clot), heartburn, or a panic attack also can cause chest pain or discomfort. All chest pain should be checked by a doctor.

The Strangest Things Pulled Out of Peat Bogs
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-24-2009    2
more: Murder wasn’t all that happened out on the bogs. Multiple trepanated skulls, that is to say, skulls with holes drilled in them, have been found. Based on the use of the procedure in medieval times, one hypothesis is that the “operation may have been performed to remove a blood clot or a less-tangible thing like a spirit” from an individual. Even now, there’s still a small number of people who think drilling holes in their skulls is therapeutic. While we don’t know much about the people who wandered these bogs thousands of years ago, analytical chemistry has helped identify substances that make them seem startlingly modern. One corpse’s hair appears to have been coated with primitive hair gel, made from “vegetable oil mixed with resin from pine trees found in Spain and southwest France.” The man lived around 300 B.C.

Fixing My Gaze
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-5-2009
"It is hard to imagine the dramatic nature of the sudden epiphany that stereoblind people have if they gain stereopsis, as when Barry saw the steering wheel floating before her. Stereoblind people perceive the world in two dimensions, as a flat display; they judge distance and depth by such cues as size, shading, and the partial obscuring of one object by another. They have to develop these techniques in childhood because they suppress the information coming from one of their eyes, since the data from both eyes fail to match. Nothing in the experience of the stereoblind can prepare them for what stereoscopic vision is like. If they get it, the experience can be overwhelming; it can even cause vertigo, as happened to Barry, and sensations of travel-sickness." "It is a pleasant and optimistic thought indeed, that at any point in life we might, if determined enough, be able to fix things, improve, mend, and grow in positive ways: even to see more clearly, and not just with our eyes."

'Protest the Pill Day': Hurting women by spreading lies
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  6-6-2009    6
I’m not sure I agree with the heading of this clip. For example, I don’t think the protesters are actually doing any harm to women and the clip does not support its claim. It is true that women have died from complications associated with using hormonal birth control, but it is treatable. Women are far more likely to develop blood clots due to pregnancy than from birth control. Taking the pill does not guarantee a blood clot as they would like you to believe. The true reason behind the protest is they want to control what women do with their personal lives. I am all for freedom of choice. If you want to take birth control, that’s between you and your conscience. If you think it is wrong to take birth control then don’t take it. but before you go out and protest get all the information first and then make an informed decision.

Grapefruit diet 'put leg at risk'
ofcapri
by ofcapri  4-2-2009
When she arrived at the hospital she was experiencing difficulty walking, shortness of breath, and light-headedness. By the next day her left leg had turned purple. The woman was generally in good health but was slightly overweight and had decided to diet. Three days before falling ill, she had begun a crash diet which included eating 225g of grapefruit each morning, after rarely eating the fruit in the past.

Ex-Taliban Commander Lectures Mullah Omar About Koran
arifsali
by arifsali  2-1-2008
"My brothers," Salaam says, "these were the first five verses of the Koran that were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad at Mount Hira: 'Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created all, has created man from a blood clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, who has taught by the pen, has taught man that which he knew not.'” Salaam says those verses led him to question who the Taliban really are after seeing them "taking pens from our children and taking away schools and education."
