The Audacity of Debt
merrie
by merrie  12-16-2009    2
Democrats ridiculed Mr. Bush as "the most fiscally irresponsible President in history," but then they saw him and raised. They took an $800 billion deficit and made it $1.4 trillion in 2009 and perhaps that high again in 2010. In 10 months they have approved more than $1 trillion in spending that has saved union public jobs but has done little to assist private job creation. Still to come is the multitrillion-dollar health bill and another $100 billion to $200 billion "jobs" bill. We've never obsessed over the budget deficit, because the true cost of government is the amount it spends, not the amount it borrows. Milton Friedman used to say that the nation would be far better off with a budget half the current size but with larger deficits. Mr. Obama and his allies in Congress have done the opposite: They have increased the budget by 50% and financed the spending with IOUs. The national debt held by the public reached its peak in the Reagan years at 40.9% and hit 49.2% in 1995.

Wake Up Before Obama Destroys The US
dl211
by dl211  12-14-2009    1
And I’d add, as Mr. Obama destroys our economic freedom and prosperity, we will be heading toward the day when we cannot afford or maintain our national security and military systems that keep us safe. Then, on our foreign policy plight under Mr. Obama, Mr. Podhoretz writes, “In global affairs, will the United States sit mute and inactive as the world’s most dangerous regimes acquire the world’s most dangerous weapons – or will we muster the will to prevent them from doing so? Will we continue to apologize for being the greatest, the noblest, the freest, and the most selfless nation in the history of the world – or will we find the strength, yet again, to resist the temptation to blame ourselves for the slings and arrows hurled at us by those who wish us ill?”

Ed Meese Suddenly Worried About the Prison Population
zizzy
by zizzy  12-11-2009    1
So, Ed Meese, we respectfully disagree with you, when you say that "liberal ideas of extending the power of the state" are to blame for an out-of-control criminal justice system. You are, after all, the Ed Meese who said once said this: U.S News & World Report: You criticize the Miranda ruling, which gives suspects the right to have a lawyer present before police questioning. Shouldn't people, who may be innocent, have such protection? Meese: Suspects who are innocent of a crime should. But the thing is, you don't have many suspects who are innocent of a crime. That's contradictory. If a person is innocent of a crime, then he is not a suspect."

Asian women are a preference for many -- Most African Americans are not truly "black African" as to the testament of many Africans from Africa...The people I've met from Africa do not consider American Blacks to be African black..because of many African Americans have white ancestry mixed in their bloodline....

The Arabs Have Stopped Applauding Obama

"American arms had won a decent outcome in Iraq, but Mr. Obama would not claim it—it was his predecessor's war. Vigilance had kept the American homeland safe from terrorist attacks for seven long years under his predecessors, but he could never grant Bush policies the honor and credit they deserved. He had declared Afghanistan a war of necessity, but he seems to have his eye on the road out even as he is set to announce a troop increase in an address to be delivered tomorrow."

Taking Mayor Daley at face value for a moment, is he seriously arguing for increased gun control on a military base? If there had been more guns around, this ticking Jihad bomb could have been put down a lot faster than he was. With no pogrom backlash after 9/11, no pogrom backlash after Bali, no pogrom backlash after Madrid, no pogrom backlash after London, no pogrom backlash after Mumbai, no backlash after countless other Jihad attacks, why would there be any reason to believe the reaction would be any different in this case?

Looking for a middle class
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  10-17-2009
A sad depiction of how our middle class has been steadily losing ground to corporate dominance. This new economy is strangling the very people responsible for the success of many businesses who, along with government’s help, are creating this new economy. The days of job security are over. Beginning when companies began turning their ‘full-benefit’ employees into contractors to save the expense of providing those benefits. The middle class is about to be beat down even further when the drive to reduce the deficit and debt takes center stage. Reduction of Social Security, Medicare and other entitlements will be seen as the answer to rising costs and the middle class will be the biggest losers, again. Ms Cocco advises us to “Fight the myths. Break the back of the corrupt campaign finance and lobbying systems. These are hard political tasks. But being pushed further down is harder, still. Because no one knows where the new bottom lies.” Advice we would all do well to heed.

Amnesty Now!
merrie
by merrie  10-17-2009    1
Let’s play a hypothetical game. Let us assume that Gutierrez’s bill passes, and he achieves his major goal of a general amnesty. The 12 million aliens currently residing in the country illegally suddenly find themselves free to stay, become card-carrying members of the Democratic Party, and live happily ever after. What happens to the next person who steals across the border? History has shown us that, after an amnesty, the rate of illegal border crossings increases. After the last amnesty bill in 1986, the US experienced a flood of new illegal aliens crossing the border. In the twenty-year period between 1985 and 2005, the number of illegal residents soared from an estimated 2-3 million to about 11 million. It is only human nature that, upon hearing of an amnesty, people would, predictably, risk all to come to the US by any means and simply wait out their chance in the hopes of catching the next one.

Chicago's loss: Is passport control to blame?
Lexica
by Lexica  10-2-2009    3
Sounds far more plausible to me than claims that Michelle Obama was being "like Marie Antoinette". More: The exchange underscores what tourism officials here have been saying for years about the sometimes rigorous entry process for foreigners, which they see as a deterrent to tourism. Once the news came out that Chicago lost its Olympic bid, the U.S. Travel Association didn’t miss an opportunity to point that out, sending out a critical press release within hours.… International travel to the U.S. declined by 10 percent in the first quarter of 2009 according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. To lure visitors back, U.S. Travel has been pushing the Travel Promotion Act, which recently was passed in the Senate and is awaiting action in the House, to create a campaign to strengthen the image of the United States abroad.

which of them is more unreal. To be sure, Colonel Qaddafi peddled his thoughts on the laboratory origins of “swine flu” and the Zionist plot behind the Kennedy assassination. But, on the other hand, President Obama said: “No nation can or should try to dominate another nation.” Pardon me? Did a professional speechwriter write that? Or did you outsource it to a starry-eyed runner-up in the Miss America pageant? Whether or not any nation “should try” to dominate another, they certainly “can,” and do so with effortless ease, all over the planet and throughout human history. And how about this passage? “I have been in office for just nine months " though some days it seems a lot longer. I am well aware of the expectations that accompany my presidency around the world. These expectations are not about me. Rather, they are rooted, I believe, in a discontent with a status quo that has allowed us to be increasingly defined by our differences . . . ”

A comment on a clip stated: “preventable deaths…how about Heart, lung disease, cancer, etc.?” Not sure what the clipper was getting at, citing these ills; calling them preventable? Anyway, it occurred to me… what about WAR; shouldn't that be at the top of this woeful list? The Bush admin, wanted WAR so badly, they started TWO! Of course, they could, 9/11, HAPPENED! (I’m still not convinced the attack occurred without a WINK & NOD.) Now 8 yrs later and still young people die because of that infamous day. We can’t blame Bush any longer, so who should bear the brunt of accountability for the bloodletting? Obama won the election, partly due to his stance against war and now he’s ratcheting up troop levels assuring its longevity? If he continues to act like Bush when it comes to WAR; He has not only misled us, he FUCKED us royally! And although I’m charmed by his eloquence, it can’t last… We, who despise war, won’t look the other way while he sends so many to die…& OVER WHAT?

This isn't about Labor Day It's About Cute and Nasty Starlings

I love birds. Especially since moving to a rural area where you can witness firsthand, these wild creatures going about their daily tasks of survival. And they are fastidious as well as genius at endurance (we should be so canny). So when I see an article about birds I can't help but open it up to a read. As much as I enjoy these darlings who share Earth with us, there are people who have quite opposite feelings. Actually, they hate the little buggers. How can this be? Well it all boils down to money again... So much of this world's tribulations can be traced back to the almighty buck. It seems these sweet little birds can do damage to industry. Yikes, these tiny beasts are in for it now. So little starling you've been targeted. But this is one enemy of Private Enterprise that won't go down easy. I know there'll be those who will retort my adoration for these animals by telling me I'm nuts because they’re vermin and cause disease. I have a comeback on THEY CAUSE DISEASE, SO DO WE BUB!

The REAL "Inconvenient Truth": Cell Phones and Bee Colony Collapse
blueridge
by blueridge  9-3-2009    4
Honey bees are in effect saying, "Can you hear us now?" The consequences of inaction on this are real and enormous. But unlike oil, coal or "carbon emissions", not even Al Gore or Obama will advocate giving up or curbing cell phones or towers, even though the hard facts on this are much more threatening to agriculture, and by consequence human life, the economy of foods, and the entire eco-system than the mythical "global warming" doomsday scenerio. Cell phones are America's and the world's unnecessary CONVENIENCE that apparently are not even being debated by the Climate people, willing to sacrifice the pollination of food crops by honey bees for cell chat. The buzz is real, but governments are not moving to regulate, and are likely too afraid of consumers who do not care about consequences any more than those who throw fast food trash out the window of their cars. There is also hard evidence of radiation from cell phones directly damaging human health.

Ted Kennedy’s America

by n2sooners  8-27-2009
In 1992, Bill Clinton introduced the phrase “the politics of personal destruction” to the lexicon. Clinton used it preemptively to delegitimize scrutiny of his private life. But it didn’t work. His private life spilled out for public viewing, steaming in the cold air. The Florida recount saw Republicans feeling justified to do whatever it took " even fight like Democrats " to win. The recount, in turn, laid the foundation of bitterness and bile that fuels the omnivorous banshees of the “netroots,” who proudly proclaim they care only about winning and being as ruthless as they imagine the Republicans are. But at this point you know the story. In Ted Kennedy’s America, it’s blow for blow and eye for eye now, and everyone is blind to how we got here.

Americans are dealing with a lot of hate. Sodini’s diary hits on some reasons. After reading this clip, supported by diary entries, I see a lonely life and the futility of continuing that lonely life. While reading it I can almost feel for the guy but then it hits me, the reason he is not living the life he wants is because he gave up too easily. People find their own reason for living. If you aren’t happy with your life is it really anyone else’s fault? This guy places blame on every woman because he failed to have one in his life. I’m not talking about short term relationships he admits he had, if this guy had had his head on straight then there would have been a woman who would commit to a life with him. He is the reason for his failure. He points out his hopelessness and some valid problems that are brought on by the callousness of others, but to take lives because you don’t like the way you are treated is grounds for therapy not a deadly weapon.

Obama has set a series of false notes in foreign policy by standing silently as huge crowds in Iran courageously protested a stolen election and failing to support Honduras against a Chavez-like attempt to avoid the rules of a democracy. He has not even been consistent: in the first case, he feared being characterized as the Wild “Meddling” West; in the second, he had no compunctions against major meddling. In another sense, however, he was consistent. In both cases he failed to support the people who were standing up, which makes his rhetoric in Russia still another false note.
