POPSEvery time the little bear cub moved, I heard her cry with pain Trembling at the prospect of each blow from the stick, each rough pull of the rope, she is forced to wander the dusty roads, standing and swaying on her hind legs on command. She tires easily from her poor diet, pants with thirst in the oppressive heat, shakes with fear and exhaustion. Yet this bear cub dare not stop dancing, and she must do so again and again. This story is typical of the plight of many bear cubs in India. Sadder still, over 50% of these beautiful little creatures do not even survive the journey to 'market'. They simply die in cages en route, from starvation, dehydration and trauma. That's why these bears desperately need your support. WSPA is working with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) to stop this barbaric practice. Our aim is to halt it at the source, and your help is vital in helping us stop this cruelty.

POPSA woolly weatherworm The woolly bear caterpillar also has a habit of curling up into a ball and remaining motionless when it is disturbed or encounters danger. In some cultures this behavior has metamorphosed the word “caterpillar” from a noun into a verb, as in, “He caterpillared when he was given a difficult assignment.”

POPSThe Spirit Bear
While the white bears are protected by law, the other ninety percent...the ones that carry the gene but don't show the coloration...are fair game. Also, timber companies are interested in logging the islands and areas where these bears live. For the past couple of years debate has been heating up over a proposed park centered on Princess Royal Island. "Spirit Bear Park" would encompass 265,000 hectares, (1,000 sq. miles "ish"), and provide complete protection for the ten or fifteen white bears that live there and their black kin, as well as grizzlies, wolves, ancient stands of Sitka Spruce, and important spawning streams for salmon. The B.C. government has counter-proposed a 39,000 hectare park, giving the rest to loggers. The clear-cutting began last year. We will just have to wait and see what kind of impact it has on the bears. Black bears of any color are pretty good at adapting to man, and I think that in the long run, the Kermode Bear will survive, even if it's numbers are reduce

POPSCan Honduras Be Saved From Communism? in order to defend their friend Zelaya. Unfortunately, some authorities in the U.S. have fallen for that version, without really knowing what went on. Why is Obama siding with Chavez and Castro on this matter? I believe that, on the one hand, Obama is beginning to show his socialist tendencies, which were denounced during the American presidential campaign. On the other hand, Obama is letting himself be influenced by several presidents of Latin America, particularly Lula of Brazil, who is the real power behind the São Paulo Forum. Can Honduras be saved from Chavez? I think it can, but it requires the participation of all citizens, not only of Latin America, but of the U.S. as well. Honduras is facing tremendous pressures, and will not be able to bear them without the help of the world public opinion. Every article, every interview, in favor of the Honduran democracy helps to defend their institutions against Chavez’s assault.

POPSBees buzz parked plane in Beverly Wilkins said the windy day may have forced the swarm down as it came across the airport. The queen, who is not used to flying long distances, may have stopped to rest, and the other bees congregated around to protect her. The bees usually have a destination picked out in advance. Wilkins, the past president of the Essex County Bee Association, and his wife, Linda, live on Mill Street in Middleton, and in April their hives were plundered by a black bear. A motion-activated camera captured an image of the bear milling about their backyard. It destroyed about eight hives, costing them hundreds of dollars. "This is replacing the hives (the bear) ate," Wilkins said of the bees he picked up in Danvers.

POPSCongress Should Wear T-Shirts with Endorsements Lawmakers should fork over all campaign contributions received from TARP-taking banks. These institutions doled out $114 million in the past year for lobbying and campaign contributions, according to CRP. Add that to the $50 million in AIG bonuses already returned by recipients, and we could put this whole bonus kerfuffle to rest. It turns out the $114 million was money well spent. It bought the banks $295.2 billion in TARP money, a return of more than 258,000 percent. Who needs off-balance-sheet vehicles when the government can provide that kind of return on investment?

POPSCongress Should Wear T-Shirts With Endorsements With Congress pounding away at Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke for more transparency, and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo threatening to release the names of the AIG bonus recipients -- an invasion of privacy that has no relevance to anything -- isn’t it time Congress let a little sun shine in?
