Biofuels Breakthrough: Making Fuel From Air With Engineered Microbes
sincitykitty
by sincitykitty  11-11-2009
Although the process sounds similar to algae-produced biofuels, the Joule process is incredibly (and beneficially) different for several reasons: * Doesn’t produce biomass * No agricultural feedstock needed * Can be conducted on non-arable land * Doesn’t need fresh water * Produces fuel directly without the need for extraction or refinement Apparently Joule has discovered some unique genes inside these microbes that produce the enzymes responsible for directly making the molecules found in diesel. From there, engineering organisms to make other fuels was a simple step. At this point, production of the fuels has only been done in the lab, but Joule has plans to open a pilot plant in early 2011.

Houseplants Make Air Healthier
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  9-9-2009    1
Plant positives Here are some other reasons to keep indoor shrubbery around: * Plant-filled rooms contain up to 60 percent fewer airborne molds and bacteria than rooms without plants, studies show. * People who work in offices with windows and plants are happier than others, according to a study of 450 office workers in Texas and the Midwest. In fact, 82 percent of the participants who worked with plants and windows around said they felt "content" or "very happy," compared with 58 percent in windowless plant-less offices who said the same. * Plants seem to make people more contemplative and self-reflective, according to one ethnologist. Decotau's study was detailed in a recent issue of the journal Hort Technology.

Biomass Plant Bad For Environment
merrie
by merrie  5-11-2009
One can identify clear-cut areas, which are already extensive on state forests and parks before even one biomass plant is built, by viewing infrared satellite imagery where the clear-cut areas contrast sharply with the vegetated areas. Biomass is not carbon neutral. How could it possibly be, when petroleum would be used - and carbon dioxide emitted - to cut the wood, chip it into tiny pieces, and haul it up to 100 miles in trucks that get less than 10 miles to the gallon, to a $150 million plant that would take significant energy to build, where it would then be burned with less than 25 percent efficiency? The only way this could be carbon neutral is if vegetation instantaneously grew back faster than it was burned at the facility. This is not going to happen. If we allow biomass plants, future generations will rightly ask "what on earth were they thinking?"

Obama gives biofuels the big thumbs up
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  5-7-2009    4
On the surface this may seem like a good idea, but the mandate to, by 2022, have up to 15 billion gallons of corn ethanol counted toward the 36 billion gallon biofuel production level will only worsen its effect on food production. We’re at 6-9 billion gallons of corn ethanol now and with all the havoc that has wreaked on agriculture worldwide, the concept of almost tripling that amount over the next 20-odd years is terrifying. What may yet save us is the fact that it will likely prove a simply impossible standard to meet. And the fact that the administration’s rationale for expanding the use of biofuels continues to be the misplaced desire “to reduce our dependence on foreign oil” is just ludicrous. Addressing climate change WILL reduce our dependence on foreign oil. But simply reducing dependence on foreign oil won’t save the planet—only zeroing out our carbon emissions will do that. So energy policy in this country must be seen through that one, single lens.

"Your breath may soon power jets"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  2-12-2009
continues: Installation of the carbon recycling system began in January, with a goal of harnessing 24,000 gallons of fuel from the pilot program, as well as providing heating and hot water to the airport. The company hopes to expand to a 289,000 gallon system following the trial, providing approximately 800 gallons of biofuel each day. Origo Industries, which aims to revolutionize industries in response to the challenge of climate change, may also look into using the technology to produce aviation grade biofuel in the future, a hot topic in the aviation industry as of late. The full cost of the trial was not disclosed, but Origo indicated the project would likely deliver a return on investment within one year’s time.
