Bio Gas a renewable cleaner fuel
jimmy123
by jimmy123  9-3-2008
Advantages • It is renewable, and its production uses materials that otherwise collect in places such as landfills • It is a high octane, clean-burning fuel which doesn’t threaten soil, surface water, or groundwater. • Its extremely similar to natural gas, meaning it is highly compatible with an already well-established energy source that currently provides the US with one quarter of its energy needs • it is available in massive amounts domestically.

Oklahoma: Home To The World's Largest Switchgrass For Energy Field
urbanlife
by urbanlife  5-5-2008    4
Oklahoma has made an aggressive establishment of 1,000 acres of switchgrass: the first of its size anywhere in the world focused on biomass production. The fields also will serve as a "living classroom" where agricultural producers, policymakers and the general public can see and experience these crops, which will play a key role in the United States' energy future. A unique "living laboratory" to understand the production and long-term impact of bio-energy crops, as well as experiment with new production techniques and critical harvest, collection and transport methods. This dedicated land will allow us to demonstrate the advantages of switchgrass. A cellulosic bio-refinery currently being constructed by in Hugoton, Kansas (less than 35 miles from the fields) to process the switchgrass into bio-fuel. “Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain, and the wavin' switchgrass can sure smell sweet…”

C'MM'N
hennis
by hennis  3-17-2008
C'MM'N is an interesting concept car built by, amongst others, the University of Technology Delft (http://tudelft.nl). The reason that I am posting this on the website, besides being a very interesting project (it has an opensource approach to the development of it), is that I am writing my advice for the future of Delft OCW (Open Courseware), and one of the things I will mention is the opportunity of connecting OCW with these kinds of projects, creating thriving communities, and engagement around content. It is an opportunity to remix and repurpose materials to just this cause, possibly increasing participation and enthusiasm for both initiatives.

Biofuel is a new craze but no saviour!
bs1999bs
by bs1999bs  3-7-2008
We are being conned as biofuels gobble up our rainforests and valuable agricultural land. In typical fashion, mankind is reaching out for an "instant cure" - a pill to pop mentality without getting to root causes and enlightened answers! As in fresh water supplies and minerals we are seeing the vested interests hell-bent on fleecing society of its natural wealth. These elements don't give a damn as they "line their pockets" at the cost to society generally!

Biofuels offer potential but .......
bs1999bs
by bs1999bs  3-1-2008
As the World's prime agricultural land shrinks along with our ability to feed the hordes of starving millions we have to question the thrust of developments. We have to ensure we don't overcome one problem to create and even bigger one. Mankind seems very adept at doing just that!

The Hidden Agenda Behind The Bush Administration's Bio-Fuel Plan
merrie
by merrie  2-26-2008
VERY DISTURBING REPORT Big oil is also driving the bio-fuels bandwagon. Prof. David Pimentel of Cornell University and other scientists claim that net energy output from bio-ethanol fuel is less than the fossil fuel energy used to produce the ethanol. Measuring all energy inputs to produce ethanol from production of nitrogen fertilizer to energy needed to clean the considerable waste from bio-fuel refineries, Pimintel's research showed a net energy loss of 22% for bio-fuel—they use more energy than they produce. That translates into little threat to oil demand and huge profit for clever oil giants that re-profile themselves as "green energy" producers. So it's little wonder that ExxonMobil, Chevron and BP are all into bio-fuels. This past May, BP announced the largest ever R&D grant to a university, $500 million to the University of California-Berkeley to fund BP-dictated R&D into alternative energy including bio-fuels.
