POPSForest Service warns Coloradans: Beware of camping Latinos More: Polly Baca, co-chairwoman of the Colorado Latino Forum, told the Denver Channel that the Forest Service warning is racist and ill-conceived and threatening. “It’s discriminatory and it puts Hispanic campers in danger.” Marvink Correa, spokesman for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, said that the next time he goes camping, he would “be sure to play nothing but Bruce Springsteen.”

POPSRacist Mobs at it in Australia (Again) There were also reports that the group attacked a taxi driven by an Indian Sikh and an Asian shopkeeper. In scenes reminiscent of the Cronulla riots, when 5,000 white Australians congregated in the Sydney beachfront suburb and attacked Lebanese immigrants, groups of men jumped on cars that were stopped at traffic lights and chanted racist slogans to the terrified passengers.

POPS Here Come The Jobs ~ Get Your Shovels Ready But nearly 500 protesters in Mesa came to reject the savior-based economy with signs mocking gimme-mania. Their posters jeered: "Give me Pelosi's Plane"; "Annual Passes to Disneyland"; "Fund Bikini Wax Now"; "Stimulate the Economy: Give Me a Tummy Tuck"; "Free Beer for My Horses." And my favorite: "Give me liberty or at least a big-screen TV." Plans are underway for anti-stimulus-palooza protests in Overland Park, Kan., Nashville and New York -- home of smug Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer. Schumer's derisive comment on the Senate floor about the "chattering classes" who oppose reckless spending has not been forgotten or forgiven. The insult spurred central Kentucky talk show host Leland Conway to organize a pork rind drive. Angry taxpayers bombarded the senator's office with 1,500 bags of cracklins. http://townhall.com/Columnists/MichelleMalkin/2009/02/20/rebel_yell_taxpayers_revolt_against_gimme-mania?page=full

POPSPride and Progress: How Far America Has Come In The Last 40 Years food for thought from Jonah Lehrer a bit more: "Over time, these conscious limits on language helped re-engineer our unconscious beliefs, allowing people to slowly purge themselves of obsolete stereotypes. (We tend to think of the unconscious as the domineering elephant of the mind, but sometimes the feeble rider manages to steer the beast in the right direction.) Of course, the unconscious remains a murky and biased place, but I think white Americans have shown that it can be amended, that simply altering the ways in which we refer to people can, over time, change what we secretly think of people."

POPSGeorgia Uni asks stadium fans not to flush They can save a lot of water going down the drain if rather than everyone flushing, the the urinal is rinsed periodically. There is another water saving method that can be used in toilets, where a house brick is placed in the cistern, to reduce the total volume lost in a flush, by the amount the brick displaces.

POPSCAPL pictorial lexicon (German-English) CAPL: Culturally Authentic Pictorial Lexicon This is a pilot project that looks very promising. There are several more categories of images than those I could clip, each with the German word and the English word.

POPS25 signs you've grown up! 90% of the time you spend in front of a computer is for real work. You go to the drug store for ibuprofen and antacid, not condoms and pregnancy tests...interesting!

POPSSigns and Billboards from Around the World - Please add yours I tossed together a simple site for posting up signs and billboards that you may encounter when walking through town, driving about, etc. This is an experiment to see how long it takes to get lots of images from all over the world. I am hoping some clippers will post. Note that this site is cell phone enabled, so once you create an account, there is information on there on how to upload from your cell phone. Please let others know. Would be cool if someone could get some from Times Square.

POPSSigns you're getting old... "I just can't drink the way I used to" replaces "I'm never going to drink that much again". I'm not that old...but 'tis true compared to how I was last year...no more downing 6 pints of beer in a row for me...

POPSThe Angry Young Man The Learning Channel When I say learning, you say… that’s right, decorating and human oddities. No matter what you’re trying to learn, you would be hard pressed to put together a worse curriculum than the schedule from The Learning Channel (TLC). Here are some listings from today’s lineup: A Makeover Story; Clean Sweep; Trading Spaces; While You Were Out; Martha; and Wild Child: The Story of Feral Children. Why not put the Dukes of Hazzard on there so I can learn how to make moonshine and slide across the hood of a car? Other recent educational fare includes: The Half Ton Man; What Not to Wear; and a show about a bunch of dudes who run a tattoo parlour. What I really want though is a single show where a huge fat guy raised by dogs gets the world’s biggest tattoo, a new wardrobe and some simple tricks for making his dining room more inviting. TLC? How about WTF?
