POPSPostcard from a Tipping Planet During the current review, we are doing to our Clipmarks Clipbase under the headings of Energy and Climate, I found this item clipped in June 2008. It was very freaky then. It is even more so now after Nohopeinhagan. All we can do is love nature and each other in the time there is left ... which is what we should have been doing all along! Surely, it is better to be aware of the risks, than to ignore them. The 2008 IPCC projections which this cartoon is based were much more optimistic than current estimates because the rate of acceleration of both emissions and climate heating was underestimated (and probably still is).

POPSIndia's Last "Dancing", Endangered Bear Set Free Raju was the last endangered sloth bear that had to work for a living, but who now can roam free at the Bannerghatta bear sanctuary on the outskirts of the southern city of Bangalore. The bear's freedom is the outcome of lengthy efforts by animal rescue organisations and the government that have taken the "dancing" bears off India's streets, where the animals were once as ubiquitous as snake charmers and their cobras.

POPSGet Yer Merry On! Based on the latest warmal Algorithm, this month’s holiday lightup is probably going to cost us at least 1,500 polar bears! Speaking of which, anyone know what the lighting bill is at the newly green White House this year? “I’ve been doing it for six years,” said 26-year-old D.J. Damato, who each year trims his family home on 9 Butternut Road with more than 30,000 lights. “Little kids love it, and that’s kind of what keeps me going,” he said. Little kids love it? For Gaia’s sake! Frank Armata, a 30-year resident, began stringing his display when the neighborhood was still relatively dark. “I was the first on my street to set up the lights,” he said of his 25 Preston Road home. “Now, there’s competition … ” Can’t we all just get along? Not far away on 38 Bartlett St., there’s another amazing show. “I love lights,” said Felix Barcelos, 84, who has been decorating his house for three decades. BostonHerald http://bit.ly/4RWf

POPSThe master grafter: 101 varieties of fruit on one tree More: His modified trees are fantastic monuments to the potentials of science. Until a windstorm this fall dashed the tree to pieces, Real had a 53-in-one persimmon. His cherry tree is a 20-in-one. His Prunus rootstock bears 50 plums and prunes. With his peaches, Real concedes, “I got lazy.” The tree produces 10 types of peaches, five nectarines and an almond. His avocado tree now bears seven cultivars, including Bacon, Hass, Mexicola and Mexicola Grande. Most recently, Real fitted the enduring tree with a branch of Daily 11, a variety whose fruits can weigh 11 pounds. Then there’s that amazing 14-foot-tall citrus tree with its astounding 101 cultivars. From marble-sized calamondins to 5-pound mellow gold pomelos, the fruits constitute 24 species in the genus Citrus , with one or more ripe at all seasons of the year. The tree bears such rarities as sunquats, lemonquats, mandarinquats, trifoliates, citrons, yuzu and sudachi.

POPSChina’s Asset Bubble It is a matter of time. What will it mean to the Chinese Government? Will it buckle under the weight of massive dissatisfaction? Or will it mean some dark years for the Chinese people? What will it mean to the US Dollar? Will China unload the dollar thus massively devaluing the currency in order to keep their economy afloat? But would they if they are so dependent on foreign trade? And what will it mean to the world economy. Will the world economy be firm enough to absorb Chinese economic contraction? So far, China's economy has been one of the few bright spots. If the world economy is not strong enough China's asset bubble burst may lead to another global recession.

POPSThe U.K. is leading the way on AGW Hoax 100 is a little generous. Many of the reasons are just re-wordings of previous reasons. Still, there is far too much doubt cast on this bad idea to disrupt whole economies that are already on the brink of collapse. Enough already with the Polar Bears. The penguins in Antarctica are quite chilly and happy.

POPSTrichinosis From Raw Bear Meat Can Cause Explosive Diarrhea According to the CDC, diagnosed cases of Trichinosis, a type of roundworm, occurred at a rate of roughly 3.5 per year in the United States. By comparison, there were an average of three serious bear attacks per year in the U.S. and Canada throughout the 1990's. It's safe to say, I won't be eating any raw bear meat anytime soon. Hopefully, I wont be eaten by a bear either!
