Germany bans chemicals linked to honeybee devastation
righthand
by righthand  5-23-2008    4
The company says an application error by the seed company which failed to use the glue-like substance that sticks the pesticide to the seed, led to the chemical getting into the air. Bayer spokesman Dr Julian Little told the BBC's Farming Today that misapplication is highly unusual. "It is an extremely rare event and has not been seen anywhere else in Europe," he said. Clothianidin, like the other neonicotinoid pesticides that have been temporarily suspended in Germany, is a systemic chemical that works its way through a plant and attacks the nervous system of any insect it comes into contact with. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency it is "highly toxic" to honeybees.

Disappointment For Onyx
Matthew Herper
by Matthew Herper  2-18-2008
The next big event for Onyx and Bayer would have been if their Nexavar pill worked in non-small cell lung cancer. A clinical trial was stopped early because it had little chance of showing a survival benefit in the disease. Higher mortality was observed in a subset of patients with squamous cell cancer. It is worth noting squamous cell is the same group of lung cancer patients who cannot recieve Avastin, the targeted cancer drug from Genentech. Onyx has scheduled a conference call for tomorrow morning.

Matthew Herper
by Matthew Herper  12-13-2007
That's the total number of jobs cut by pharmaceutical companies this year, according to Ed Silverman of Pharmalot. If Ed's count is right, that's a stunning total. At the beginning of 2006, Challenger, Gray & Christmas estimated pharma job cuts had hit 70,000 over three years. And that was more job cuts than in the previous decade.

Why grow GM canola in Australia?
Togo
by Togo  11-27-2007
Genetically modified canola is already grown in some States. Bees do not recognise State boundaries and contamination already exists, so the prinmary producers are already in the hands of the multi-nationals.

Sonus Pharmaceuticals Slammed
Forbes Business
by Forbes Business  9-24-2007
Sonus' drug Tocosol was supposed to a new, improved version of Taxol. Instead, it didn't work as well, caused more loss of white blood cells and didn't have the planned benefit in reducing peripheral nerve damage. Also, Sonus and partner Bayer have stopped developing the medicine. --Matthew Herper

Silent loss of honeybees continues
Toogoo
by Toogoo  6-15-2007
Many of these commercial beekeepers are on the verge of loosing their livelihood..........and profiteering chemical companies refute the claims or are slow to react. Similarly, scientists leading the research into colony-collapse disorder remain non-committal, claiming a yet-to-be identified microorganism capable of causing disease may be responsible. All too late for the beekeepers, and remember honeybees pollinate many of our food items such as apples, nuts, citrus fruit etc.
