Oakland's Peerless Coffee is still going strong
Lexica
by Lexica  11-6-2009
More: Peerless' cupping room, in fact, might be the most charming around, with the same furniture that John Vukasinovich used decades ago lining its cramped quarters, along with a shiny new spittoon - essential for cupping. "We thought for hygienic purposes, we should retire the old one," jokes George Jr. Perhaps it will last into the next generation - there's already a fourth in the wings. Will Kristina's oldest son, 7-year-old John William, become the family's next great cupper? "I hope," George Jr. says with smile. "Bring him on."

Michael Vick's unpaid dues: Why dog advocates won't just "move on"
Lexica
by Lexica  11-5-2009
More: "Jumper cables were clipped onto the ears of underperforming dogs, then, just like with a car, the cables were connected to the terminals of car batteries before lifting and tossing the shamed dogs into the water. We don't know how many suffered this premeditated murder, but the damage to the pool walls tells a story. It seems that while they were scrambling to escape, they scratched and clawed at the pool liner and bit at the dented aluminum sides like a hungry dog on a tin can. "I wear some pretty thick skin during our work with dogs, but I can't shake my minds-eye image of a little black dog splashing frantically in bloody water ... screaming in pain and terror ... brown eyes saucer wide and tiny black white-toed feet clawing at anything, desperate to get a hold…The rescuer in me keeps trying to think of a way to go back in time and somehow…pull the little dog to safety. I think I'll be looking for ways to pull that dog out for the rest of my life."

This is a garden in Santa Cruz.... but, don't be jealous San Franciscans.. who care about homeless life and plant life... we have all kinds of Garden Communities and Farms on the way now... A couple weeks ago, the SF First POWER group (homeless and formerly homeless peer advocates, already working to help others around the city, at the main library and outreach) and SF Project Homeless Connect and the Hayes Valley residents started a Garden Community at Octavia & Lily Streets. Here is a link to a 2 minute, intro video about the Octavia & Lily Garden Community in the Hayes Valley neighborhood, a few blocks north of Market Street. LINK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyBWmSjMiic 15 homeless (or formerly homeless) and 15 non-homeless residents are going to work together to build up community, grow food, share labor and share the fruits of their labor, TOGETHER ! "Black Plants" lists 75 choices for a gothy garden
Lexica
by Lexica  10-26-2009
More: Bonine says that for maximum effect, black plants require contrast in the garden. "Gold-leaf plants work really well - or a backdrop like a light stone wall. They're especially good in containers mixed with other textures and colors." While some of the plants may be available at your local nursery, Bonine suggests seeking out a specialty nursery for the more obscure varieties.

California's old-growth redwoods: Tree therapy amid ancient coastal giants
Lexica
by Lexica  10-22-2009
More: The national spotlight is being cast on the park again this month with the Redwood Empire featured in National Geographic magazine. The centerpiece is a fold-out photograph of one of the park's giants, the Iluvatar Tree, the world's third-largest coast redwood at 20 1/2 feet in diameter and 320 feet tall… Of the trails that provide access to old-growth in California, the James Irvine Loop is one of the best. This loop is a 7.5-mile round trip that provides a route past a succession of giants. It's easy enough that most anybody can simply walk a half mile and back to get a feel for an ancient forest. It's long enough that the entire loop delivers a sense of discovery and awe with each grove, and the good, clean feeling that comes with hiking a few hours in a pristine landscape. This trip can change how you feel about things for a long time. Big trees can do that.

Plates of food will cost $10 and include bratwurst, pork and chicken, as well as side dishes and vegetarian options. There will be mint julep iced tea and fresh fruit ambrosia for children and others not drinking beer. Organized by Rotary member Tom Schmitz of Piedmont, Saturday's entertainment will be provided by blues musician Rick Baskin, a harmonica player. Marin Urban Search & Rescue Team: Ready, willing, and able
Lexica
by Lexica  10-16-2009
To paraphrase Firefly , "What's that make them? Big damn heroes! " More: They can't just roll the pipes off because its likely there will be so much debris in a real disaster that rolling will be impossible. Instead they inflate rubber and kevlar bags, sort of ultra-balloons. The bags are attached to an air tank and when inflated, can support a huge amount of weight ranging from two tons with the smaller bag to a mammoth 37 tons using the large bag! It takes about ten minutes to free the 'grateful' dummy. The collaborative training provided by Novato Fire District, Marin USAR and the State of California Office of Emergency Services, mirrors the collaboration in the field. When disaster strikes, multiple agencies respond and they need to work seamlessly together. That's why this type of training is so important.

Happy (belated) 95th birthday to Jack LaLanne!
Lexica
by Lexica  10-8-2009    1
More: The seeming futility of shaping up the world does not daunt him. "I never think about that," LaLanne says. "I think about things that I can improve." One thing he can always improve is himself. LaLanne works out two hours a day, mostly swimming and lifting weights… "I work at living," he says, leaning close and squeezing an arm. "Most people work at dying. Dying's easy." One of LaLanne's most effective sales devices has been his amazing feats of strength. When Arnold Schwarzenegger came to America in 1968 and became an instant sensation on the Southern California muscle scene, LaLanne challenged the kid to a duel at Muscle Beach. The Austrian Oak was 21; the Oakland Oak was 54. "I beat him in chin-ups and push-ups," LaLanne says. "He said, 'That Jack LaLanne's an animal! I was sore for four days. I couldn't lift my arms!' " At age 70, handcuffed, LaLanne towed 70 loaded boats 1.5 miles in Long Beach Harbor.
