POPSJohn "the Penguin" Bingham: On whether "slow" runners should be allowed in marathons More: The Grumpy bar has been pushed back to 4 hours which means, I think, that anyone running UNDER 4 hours is safe from bashing by the new elite. If you extrapolate out it won’t be long before the 5-hour marathoners will be the new elite and they will complain about the slow marathoners. Where will it end? It won’t. As long as there are people who need to use others to feel good about themselves it won’t end. As long as there are people for whom excellence is relative it won’t end. So, I’m not going to worry about it.… Standing at the start line of a marathon – or any race – or any training run – you only have to answer one question; am I prepared to do my best today? And that’s all I have to say about that.

POPS2010 Kawasaki Concours 14 First Ride "But the big story this year are those touring improvements. Are they enough to vault the Concours ahead of its class? Well, the Kawasaki has certainly gained ground on its competition. At $14,599 in base form and $15,299 for the ABS/TC version we sampled, it delivers a lot for the pricetag (A comparably equipped BMW K1300GT with heated grips and ASC (Anti Slip Control), for example, is well over $20K.) The new Connie is also possibly the best looking sport-tourer out there, available for 2010 in Candy Neptune Blue and Flat Super Black. One thing is certain, Kawasaki took a great bike, listened to its customers, and then made the bike even better. Sounds like a winning formula to us." ~Bart Madson

POPSSouth Carolina pardons black brothers convicted of 1913 killing Police initially focused on Mrs Davis and her husband Bart, who were arrested with packed suitcases which included a bloodied pair of trousers. But investigators' attention shifted when Mr Lewis's stolen pistol was traced to John "Monk" Stevenson, a small-time criminal who said he had been given the gun by Bart Davis's brother. He claimed he was only a lookout when Lewis was killed. However, in a plea deal that spared his life, Stevenson – who was also black – changed his story and named the Griffin brothers as the killers and testified against them. According to sworn statements from fellow inmates, Stevenson admitted in jail that the men he implicated knew nothing of the crime. He said that the Griffins "could afford a lawyer and beat the rap". The brothers were the owners of a 138-acre farm, making them probably the wealthiest blacks in the area. All of the land was sold to pay their legal fees and court costs.

POPSOakland man turns 111, insists it's no big deal
More: Yes, Hatch is a cool dude. Just the nicest, sharpest, spunkiest, friendliest, most capable man you'd ever want to know. Age really has nothing to do with all that, other than to provide him with a vast array of stories to pepper any conversation. Like when he used to go hunting for jack rabbits in the "country" of Castro Valley and Hayward, back before all the freeways and houses and BART. He even hunted bear in Alaska until the time he saw another hunter kill a mama bear with cubs and it broke his heart, so he hung up his shotgun. "That got me right here," he said, touching his chest. He traveled for years as a merchant marine, working on cargo ships all over the world. He taught himself Spanish when he was in Mexico City. He survived an apartment fire in 1971 in West Oakland, though he lost a couple of fingers dangling from a burning window. He worked as a blacksmith, an auto mechanic and a taxi driver, and even drove Jimmy Carter to the Oakland airport one time.

POPSOfficials: Crack may keep Bay Bridge closed past Tuesday Officials said Sunday the crack was not detected during the last inspection of the bridge two years ago. However, the crack had rust in it, so apparently it has been there a while. "A lot of good work got done last night towards making this repair," Ney said Sunday. Materials have already arrived on site, with others en route, he said. The crack is "far away" from the planned work taking place and unrelated to it, he said. About 280,000 vehicles cross the landmark bridge every day, according to Caltrans.

POPSProtesters Descend on Chevron for Climate Justice
“Chevron has the opportunity to do the right thing,” said Mayor of Richmond, Gayle McLaughlin. “They just need to agree to capping the crude at the level they currently refine. We want them to put Richmond’s residents to work modernizing and replacing the 80 year old boilers, which sadly they chose to remove from the project several months ago. ” “We want Chevron to build a cleaner and safer refinery,” said Ana Orozco of Communities for A Better Environment. ”We want the union jobs to continue to build a refinery that is cleaner and safer for our community. Our community has been put at risk for too long.” Of course Chevron would greet the peaceful protesters with a heavy police presence. Chevron has the mindset that they have the power to do anything they want without regard to how they poison people and the environment. They are championed by governments around the world who value money over the conditions of people’s lives. Chevron: agent of Corprafascism.
