In nearby Pakistan, also one of this year’s worst performers, a beleaguered President Pervez Musharraf sparked waves of violent protests when he dismissed the head of the Supreme Court and declared martial law. In a tragic close to the year, the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto left many wondering about the future prospects of this fragile, nuclear-armed state. Ironically, Pakistanis constitute the largest national U.N. contingent operating in Liberia. More than 9,000 Bangladeshi troops wear U.N. blue helmets around the world, a third of them in the Ivory Coast.

POPSBurma Cyclone, "Perfect Storm", like Katrina Note the US, which has an embassy in Burma, and the UN, both now criticizing their government (which is targeted for "regime change" by the Bush administration), were monitoring the event well in advance. Also, notably, the storm had remarkable oddities, per experts quoted here, taking an unusual easterly course, sending it over the most populated area, contrary to the typical pattern of nature-- just like Katrina. This article and others call it "the Perfect Storm". Perfect for what? Perfect in that it targeted for maximum damage in its unusual aspects. The observations in this article are remarkable. POPSBangaldesh Cyclone Terror When has Bangaldesh not been in the news with some catastrophe, when have we not seen and heard of the poorest of poor suffering yet again? Yet they are already helping one another rebuild their (I cannot say houses) living sheltered spaces.

POPSMore than 1,100 killed in Bangladesh Cyclone The largest Cyclone in 10 years, Cyclone Sidr, has left 1,100 dead, with figures expected to rise as reports from outlying regions come in. Millions have been left homeless and needed relocation due to flooding, and the Capital Dhaka, remained without power 24 hours after the cyclone.
