Who is a Jew? And who gets to decide?

First of all it must be the sign of bad taste to simply underscore somebody's religion, ethnicity, race, political believes, color of eyes or skin or hair, sexual preferences or affiliations with any social group. Hence make the life determining decisions on it. Any person is innocent unless convicted by Court of Law. And in any case deserve respectful approach. One can imagine how stressful and damaging this situation can be for teenager... :(

Need an Ask and Tell Policy Regarding Jihadists
dl211
by dl211  11-8-2009    6
Also obvious now is the fact that political correctness has run so amok that a jackass jihadist in our armed forces can spew his anti-American babble, blog about killing us, set red flags off all over the psychological place, and no one holds him down and scrapes his frontal lobe with a cement trowel. Once again, going PC gets people killed. To heck with being PC with people who want us dead; our playing the nice guy with this goon’s right to be a murderous idiot got our beloved soldiers butchered. Allow me to go back to these little Saladins and their normative murderous targets, por favor. Who are the regular marks for the mighty jihadists? Let’s see … unarmed soldiers, people eating calzones at a Pizza Hut, buses full of little school children, and people flying coach to grandmother’s house. Pathetic. Truly ignoble and pathetic. It seems as if going head-to-head with an American badass is just too, too much for these jihadist jackanapes.

Thomas Paine Regarding The Age of Reason
sahara
by sahara  10-18-2009    6
For my own part, I believe that all are impostors who pretend to hold verbal communication with the Deity. It is the way by which the world has been imposed upon; but if you think otherwise you have the same right to your opinion that I have to mine, and must answer for it in the same manner. But all this does not settle the point, whether the Bible be the Word of God, or not. It is therefore necessary to go a step further. The case then is: - You form your opinion of God from the account given of Him in the Bible; and I form my opinion of the Bible from the wisdom and goodness of God manifested in the structure of the universe, and in all works of creation. The result in these two cases will be, that you, by taking the Bible for your standard, will have a bad opinion of God; and I, by taking God for my standard, shall have a bad opinion of the Bible.

71 Things You Can Do
thisnamecantbetaken

Here's a few: # Stand up straight and have good posture. # Look people in the eyes when you talk to them. # Smile. # Be polite. # Keep your promises. # Never speak worse about a person behind their back than you do to their face. (Feel free to say nicer things about a person behind their back than to their face.) # Don't gossip and don't have a big mouth. # Never judge other people harsher than you judge yourself. # Forgive, but never forget. # Don't have skeletons in your closet. # Keep as few secrets as reasonably possible. # Despite the rule before this one, keep your friends' secrets. # Privately question your own values. # Avoid questioning other people's values, especially in public. # Listen more than you talk. # Never tell other people that you think they or something they are doing is immoral or sinful. # Keep your moral values and religion to yourself. Use them to direct your own actions. # Don't be camera shy. # Say "I love you" often.

Court orders Christian child into government education
rmowery
by rmowery  8-29-2009
This is just plain wrong. Regardless of the religion. The court has overstepped it's bounds. If the girl was in some kid of harms way that would be a different story, but it sounds like she already excels. Let the courts worry about the kids who are being abused, starved and otherwise in danger and stop worrying about what religion they are being raised under. The child will have the choice to change when they leave home should they chose, or to explore other religions, etc. Personally, if I were the parent I would tell the judge where to stick the decision, and then proceed to move out of that state. I do hope the appeal works for the family, otherwise this sets a very bad precedent.

Members of the angry mob told TheSpoof.com, "That proves he ain't Jesus! Everybody knows the Lord wants Liberty to beat WVU." "Not only that," said an unidentified Virginia State Trooper who had handcuffed the Christ; "The guy looks like a damned A-RAB, maybe even a Jew. He don't even look like Jesus. Everybody knows Jesus Christ has fair skin, light brown hair, and blue eyes!" Police were summoned to the Lynchburg Town Square where the man claiming to be Christ was preaching to "a crowd of druggies, winos, faggots, prostitutes, and homeless people who congregate there," said a man claiming to be the pastor of the Lynchburg First Church of the Nazarene. "Why would the Son of God want to associate with the scum of the earth when we have multi-million dollar churches

The evolution of religion
kelsoweikal
by kelsoweikal  8-11-2009    1
"Religion arose out of a hodgepodge of genetically based mental mechanisms designed by natural selection for thoroughly mundane purposes," he writes. Those mechanisms include conformist bias (believing what your peers believe, in order to get along), a tendency to explain events in terms of personal agency (since our mental machinery for thinking about causality evolved in the context of social interaction), and interest in remote control (a bias toward beliefs that promise influence over predators, diseases, and bad weather). Given these biases, we're prone to believe in powerful, jealous, tempestuous personal deities.

Pakistan faces Christian protest after eight people 'burned alive'

Missionary schools across Pakistan closed on Monday in a three day protest against the deaths of up to seven Christians who were burned alive in clashes with Muslims. But glad the atheists are ignoring this because it only makes sense to condemn the victims who are being burned alive. Nice. So atheists, tell me, are there any Christians who need to be condemned because they asked a girl who was disrupting a classroom during Sunday School to "be quiet." I know it's horrific that a Christian could do such a thing as asking someone to be quiet during church. I mean, burning someone alive isn't nearly as bad....dontcha think?

The American Way of War
foxyarse
by foxyarse  7-31-2009    1
 (3) Explain the invasion to the American public in simple moral terms suitable for middle-school children at an evangelical summer camp: We are bombing cities to bring the gift of democracy and American values, or to defeat some vague but frightening evil, perhaps lurking under the bed, or to get rid of a bad dictator no longer of service to us, or to bring freedom and prosperity to any survivors. (This doesn’t work in Europe, which is honestly imperialistic.) The public can then feel a sense of unappreciated virtue when the primitives resist. Sententious moralism should always trump reason. (4) A misunderstanding of military reality helps. Besides, comprehension would only lead to depression. As Napoleon said, or may have, in war the moral is to the material as three is to one, which implies that unpleasant facts should be played down in favor of cultivating a cheerful attitude. Most especially, it should not be noted that a few tens of thousands of determined, probably genetically

Religion: Punishment Wins Every Time
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  7-27-2009    4
At its most basic, religion teaches a black/white view of reality. Good/bad, righteous/sinful, us/them, religious/atheist. And least we forget, heaven/hell. And make no mistake, punishment is a major component of the mix. In fact, it's sometimes difficult to keep up with all the smiting going on in their various holy books. Is it no wonder that a person who was evicted from an anger management class would be deeply influenced by the punishment aspects of religion? Yes, we must assume responsibility for our actions but in the case of religion to be punished for eternity is not only irrational but arguably sadistic and insane.

Clipmarks: NO REASON AT ALL NEEDED TO DELETE COMMENTS
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  7-24-2009    66
This was the thread that led to my asking Clipmarks for clarification on their comment deletion policy. It's official. {{Antara}}, and any clipper, is allowed to delete any comment on clips they initiate, for any reason or none at all. I personally maintain a "No personal attacks against other clippers" policy as my only reason for censoring comments. But if I just don't like you, your politics, your hair-color, your religion, your ethnicity, sexual orientation, your city of birth, the facts you offer... I can delete your comments, no consequences. The deletion pop-up reads Please only remove comments that appear to be spam or that you believe to be unquestionably outside the bounds of civility. But that's only a suggestion. I think this will lead to less discussion and a even more negativity and hostility between clippers, and I do hope Clipmarks reconsiders.

So we batted around some ideas for names, logos, market share and so on. We’re just trying some stuff out.” The Pope was not concerned that devout Catholics may be upset by the new combined-faith church. “Let’s just say, if they’re that devout, they’ll do what I say. I can switch to infallibility mode any time I like. And if any of my people don’t like that, they can just kiss my ring goodbye.” The Pope downplayed concerns that the merger could bring Muslim terrorists into the Catholic church, dismissing the attacks of recent years as youthful hijinks. “Hey, what kid hasn’t joined an extremist group at some time or other. I feel for those young mujahideen scallywags. It’s just a phase. I was in the Hitler Youth, myself.” “I’ll tell you one thing, though,” quipped the aged pontiff, “when this deal goes through, those Jews better watch out! No, I’m k

Could Judge Sotomayor Qualifiy as a Juror?
merrie
by merrie  6-9-2009
. . experiences that people find themselves unable to get over. But we strive to keep those attitudes out of our law — Would Judge Sotomayor be qualified to serve as a juror? Let's say she forthrightly explained to the court during the voir dire (the jury-selection phase of a case) that she believed a wise Latina makes better judgments than a white male; that she doubts it is actually possible to "transcend personal sympathies and prejudices and aspire to achieve a greater degree of fairness and integrity based on the reason of law"; and that there are "basic differences" in the way people "of color" exercise "logic and reasoning." If, upon hearing that, would it not be reasonable for a lawyer for one (or both) of the parties to ask the court to excuse her for cause? Would it not be incumbent on the court to grant that request? Should we have on the Supreme Court a justice who would have difficulty qualifying for jury service? Andy McCarthy

Court Sentences Bishop For Ringing Church Bells
merrie
by merrie  6-8-2009    9
"The church bells chime a short, ancient melody of praise to God," commented Stanley. "It's too bad that the value of the bells is lost on many in our society. In a busy neighborhood full of sirens, heavy traffic and loud motorcycles, these chimes are a sound of peace that do not exceed the noise level of an average conversation. Certainly, that should be at least as acceptable as the sound of an ice cream truck." Bishop Painter defended the bells as a constitutionally protected freedom of religion issue. The judge further ordered that the church – which had been ringing the bells daily on the hour from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. – may now only ring the bells on Sunday mornings and a court-ordered list of select religious holidays. "We're expressing our religion," he told KNXV. "We glorify God by the bells." The Associated Press reports Painter plans to appeal the conviction, and the ADF states that it is examining legal options for best defending Painter's rights.

Many Churches Support Gay Rights

Our church had very good experiences with Protestant clergy. Because we didn't have an actual church building of our own, we would have to go to other churches and ask if we could have our services there. The Pastors were great about it and would usually let us come in Sunday afternoons. Our problems would start when their church members found out about us. Most of them were ok with our being there but it only takes one loudmouth who thinks it's all about them to make it bad for everyone.
