POPSTraumatized Gorilla Who Carried Around Her Dead Baby's Body Gives Birth to Healthy Infant "Gana looks very happy," she told The Associated Press. Zuehlke said the zoo probably would name the baby Claudia " after Claudia Kleinert, a German television weather forecaster and presenter. The zoo asked Kleinert to be the baby's godmother because "she showed enormous interest in the mother's last baby, which ended up dying tragically," Zuehlke said. Visitors already can see the new arrival, one of the zoo's six gorillas. The baby is Gana's third. Her first child, a female born in 2007, now lives at the Stuttgart zoo.

POPSDiary: Protecting mountain gorillas :eek:Recently, the rangers and their families had to flee from their homes and live in makeshift camps as the latest outbreak of violence engulfed the eastern part of the country. Diddy and Innocent are long-serving rangers who have spent their working lives protecting the remaining gorillas in the war-torn region. POPSDo animals understand death? Do humans? "One example is famadihana - the turning of the bones - a traditional ritual carried out by the Malagasy people of Madagascar. Every seven years, the dead relatives are exhumed from the family tomb, re-wrapped, and danced around the tomb."

POPSGorilla grieves over death of her baby The death of Claudio is a double tragedy for Gana; for reasons unknown to scientists, she rejected her six week old daughter Mary Zwo last year. She was moved to a zoo in Stuttgart where she is healthy and one of the star attractions. By Monday morning the zoo keepers were still unable to get to the body of Claudio, so fiercely is Gana guarding him. "In the wild a gorilla mother can keep hold of a dead baby for weeks," added Herr Adler. "We will carry out an autopsy on the body when we can.

POPS(Don't move ma) "I'm the king of the world!!!" In this photo provided by the Wildlife Conservation Society, a baby gorilla shouts from atop its mother's back in the Republic of Congo. A new census conducted by WCS and the government of the Republic of Congo tallied more than 125,000 western lowland gorillas in the northern part of the country.

POPSPrimate Passion At London's Gorilla Kingdom The whirlwind romance has sparked delight among keepers. The last time a gorilla was born at the zoo was 21 years ago and Bobby, 25, has never been a father. "They did a lot of playing and sitting next to each other just touching. Then it got a bit like a cheesy soap opera." Bobby has previously mated with two other females who failed to conceive. But keepers are confident that there will be a result this time. They say that if Jookie is not pregnant already, it's only a matter of time.

POPS'Heart jerker' baby gorilla on show at Taronga The gorilla enclosure in Sydney is a must see. It completely restored my faith in zoos. Haven't zoos come a long way since the old "freak show" mentality has been discarded. My worst memory of zoos was seeing animals pacing around in unnatural habitats, polar bears surrounded with white concrete and a little pool.

POPSMeet the Dikika Baby "... the same species as the superstar fossil called Lucy, a 3.2-million-year-old adult female found in 1974. Unlike Lucy, the baby has fingers, a foot, and a complete torso. "But the most impressive difference between them," says Zeresenay (Ethiopians' first names are their formal ones), "is that this baby has a face.""
