Strange Rites
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  8-15-2008    2
From an outside perspective, this truly is a bizarre ritual that is reminiscent of old B-movies of virgins being thrown into volcanoes to appease the gods. I would bet that most believers don't share this viewpoint.

I'm switching back to Stoli. Why would it be perfect like it was before the Mexican-American War? It's certainly not perfect now, but I think we're certainly better off than most of Mexico.

Abid Mustafa: "The West to the World: Accept Our Values or Die"
Rasmus
by Rasmus  2-21-2008
The West armed with its secular doctrine and materialistic world-view proceeded to exploit, plunder and colonize vast populations in order to control resources and maximize wealth. In pursuit of these newfound riches the West succeeded in destroying civilizations such as the Incas, American Indians, Aztecs, and Aborigines. Those who survived colonization were forcibly converted to Christianity, stripped of their heritage and sold into bondage to western companies. For the indigenous people of Africa, India, Asia, the Middle East and others, the promises of freedom quickly evaporated and were replaced by colonial rule. Resistance offered by the natives towards their colonial masters was met by brute force . When the West was not destroying the natives they were too busy annihilating each other in a desperate bid to cling on to their precious colonies. World Wars I and II are prime examples of the destructive nature of western values.

Monkey Sacrifice at the Ancient Peruvian Fire Temple!
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  11-15-2007    1
I must admit, I clipped this partly just so I could be the first to tag a clip with "Monkey Sacrifice." (Look it up! I'm the first!) This is a fascinating temple to me for many reasons. It shows a diversity in Pre-Columbian cultures that is often overlooked in favor of stereotypes of a few high-profile cultures (The Inca, the Maya, the Aztecs, etc.) But it also seriously shows that it is time for us to start considering whether to retire the rusty old land bridge theory. Increasingly, it seems only logical that trans-oceanic travel was not the exclusive domain of "civilized" Europeans. Nor was being "civilized" for that matter. World history is a lot more complex than our myopic record of it. Fortunately, there are still exciting archaeological finds like this one to open our eyes.

La Ciudad De Los Palacios
ramztek
by ramztek  10-20-2007
Mexico City is the most important economic, industrial and cultural center in the country, and the most populous city;In 2005 Greater Mexico City had a population of 19.2 million, making it the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere and the second largest in the world. Mexico City is also the Federal District (Distrito Federal in Spanish, and hence the abbreviation D.F. that officially follows the name of the city). Mexico City is located in the Valley of Mexico also called the Valley of Anáhuac, a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,349 feet). It was originally built by the Aztecs in 1325 on an island of Lake Texcoco. The city was almost completely destroyed in the siege of 1521, and was redesigned and rebuilt in the following years following the Spanish urban standards. In 1524 the municipality of Mexico City was established, known as México Tenochtitlán, and as of 1585 it is officially known as Ciudad de México.

ClipXploration - Calendars 1
skwirlinator
by skwirlinator  9-9-2007
There is not just one Aztec calendar, there are two more or less independent systems. One calendar, called the xiuhpohualli, has 365 days. It describes the days and rituals related to the seasons, and therefor might be called the agricultural year or the solar year. The other calendar has 260 days. In Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, it is called the tonalpohualli or, the day-count. Most information on this Internet-site refers to the tonalpohualli, which is the sacred calendar.

Pseudoarchaeology says Vikings came to Australia
pokkets
by pokkets  8-28-2007
'Pseudoarchaeology' is a term used to describe people who know where a relic comes from, because they saw it on the news, or heard it in a bar. The Professional archaeologst Denis Gojak says archeologists need to improve on public relations. They need to learn to tell the story of the relic, qualified to the extent of the evidence presented, and the ways in which other possibilities can be eliminated.
