2012 Is Already Here
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  10-24-2009    16
"It started off same as always; coupla fossils saying how our Banjo Patterson was a better poet than Walt Whitman, how Con the Fruiterer is funnier than Seinfeld, only they're Aussies so no one knows about 'em," recalled witness Kevin Porter. "Then this bloke Martin pipes up and says Australia's main problem is that it's stuck in Australia, and everybody says 'Too right!'" "Well, it made sense at the time," Porter added. By 2 a.m., powered by national pride and alcohol, the 3-million-square-mile land mass was barging eastward through the Coral Sea and crossing into the central Pacific, leaving a trail of beer cans and Chinese take-away in its wake. When dawn broke over the Northern Hemisphere, the continent suddenly found itself, not only upside down, but smack in the middle of the Atlantic, and according to most of its 19 million inhabitants, that's the way it's going to stay.

The Dust Storm Saga
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  9-29-2009    1
We here are still engulfed by dust and smoke from fires. The dust carried all the way to the very top of queensland and across the ocean to kiwi land. People here have no idea how much is dust and how much smoke. There is a difference though our skies are a white haze - so the sun looks like the moon and I wrote to friends and said, "I feel like I am on the moon looking at the moon's moon." Strange is an understatement. The second photo is one I took today we are almost into a whole week of the dust, haze storm. Personally, I have not been too affected by it. This article from BBC is interesting though. We had floods earlier this year that flooded 60% of Queensland. A good friend here, has a husband who works in a mine inland. The Environmental Protection Agency called for it to be closed down because the tailings dam was overflowing into the main water catchment for the town and all the towns further downstream. It had a pH of 2.

Build a Fence, Look Good, Oops!
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-28-2009
Good thing no one suggested that we build a fence to keep Osama bin Ladin on one place so we could find him. The Australians built 3 fences to keep rabbits out of Western Australia. It took 6 years to build and was a bit over 2,000 in length. In 7 years, we have not been able to build 27 miles of fence using private contractors. Grin - maybe Congress should have gone for the Public Option, copied the CCC of the Depression Years, and hired a bunch of out of work construction workers put them under the supervision of US Forestry trail builders and just do it!

Boks crumble 21-6 to Aussie Machine
sunblock
by sunblock  9-5-2009
The Springboks showed their hand three minutes in when Steyn looked to draw level with a drop goal, but his rare miss saw the Australians cling to their slender advantage. In contrast, the Wallabies went in search of the try-line and looked to have scored when livewire scrum-half Genia caught the visitors napping off a free-kick, only to be denied by a desperate goal-line tackle from Fourie du Preez. The hosts were again denied on the line in the 61st minute when Jaque Fourie forced Giteau into touch. SHOOT: Grim.

"you hear a lot of horror stories about such systems, most of them false. French health care is excellent. Canadians with chronic conditions are more satisfied with their system than their U.S. counterparts. And Medicare is highly popular, as evidenced by the tendency of town-hall protesters to demand that the government keep its hands off the program." If a taxpayer funded health care system is so terrible where are the howls of protest from Canadians, Australians, French, Swiss?
