POPS"The tragic comedy of suburban sprawl" [podcast] Suburbia is a cartoon of country living in a cartoon of a house with a cartoon of a front lawn. It has all the worst aspects of being isolated out in the boonies, and none of the benefits of living in a city. It is a lifestyle that will come grinding to a halt once people realize that the cheap oil and fossil fuels that made the entire living arrangement possible are a thing of the past as The Long Emergency dawns on us.

POPSOpen Source Learning - Richard Baraniuk He talks about the way education will be more interactive, and reciprocal. Some of what he was saying reminded me of the way clipmarks, or wikki work. "Can you imagine there was a time when the books in a library didn't talk to each other?" Marvin Minsky The video is about 13min and 64 MB

POPSFree Audio Books for Disabled People This site is processing applications for Baen Books, for disabled people to have access to all of Baen's audio and ebook libraries for free. Apparently it is offered to people who have any type of disability which makes reading standard books difficult. This would include vision problems and physical limitations, as well as some learning challenges, such as dyslexia. They have you fill out a simple form, asking for your email address, snail address, phone number, type of disability and doctor's information. I am interested in this because I am the caregiver for a lady who recently lost one eye, and can't see much out of her other eye.

POPSPrint Book Sales Down, Ebook Sales Up A sign of things to come, preferences aside. I sell both print and ebooks and just like the majority of my customers, I prefer the print format. However, when e-readers are more affordable and functional, I am pretty certain things will change. Additionally, every generation is increasingly computer literate, which will lead to greater sales of ebooks. I am currently educating myself in the creation and marketing of of dynamic ebooks so that I can be up to speed in the publishing field. If you have an interest in writing an ebook, let me know! Also, I'll have a new website soon that will sell both ebooks and ereaders (some new ones are on the horizon that will be more reader-friendly). What's your opinion? Can you adapt? Would you just read books on your computer or prefer a light-weight reader such as the Kindle or similar?

POPSRezko, Wright, And Ayers If you are looking for the audio and transcripts of Pastor Wright's two sermons, they are here. In an effort to provide "context" I will try and obtain and play the entire audio of his NAACP speech from yesterday on today's program. (Michelle Malkin has a round-up on this astonishing speech.) If time permits, I'll replay the sermons as well, even though I played all the audio out there from both on Friday's program. They are the "primary documents" of the controversy, and deserve a wide audience. I suspect the pastor will make more news at the National Press Club, and I'll play that audio as well.

POPSThe Stories of Homeless This is a site where they have a audio forum where they allow you to hear people stories in 5 minute clips. The audio clips cannot be... clipped. Go to source. Everyone has a story. I think that listening to peoples stories helps stop the thinking that all homeless are bums, or that those in poverty are there due to their own irresponsibility and hurting everyones pocket books. That they are all the same in this regard. These stories show that people are diverse , and that is true with every class, and every human being. We are all different.

POPS9/11 CONTRADICTIONS: Open Letter to Congress and the Press David Ray Griffin is about to unleash truth about 9/11 in a very powerful manner in this book to be released soon. His tenacity is an example of how to push truth against propaganda by this bull dog who will not let go of the bone he has to pick with the official story. Also, listen to him on the Charles Goyette radio show in Phoenix, AZ recently where he brings out the FACT that the FBI says Ted Olson's (who represented Bush and Cheney before the Supreme Court in the Election 2000 controversy vs. Gore) story about a cell phone call from his wife on Flight 77 is not and cannot be true! (This story made Digg). The clip on the audio link about the FBI and Ted Olson's statement is about 80% into the interview.

POPSWill cell phones save books? "Literacy" isn't about passively reading, it's about reading and writing. If we want to increase the reading of books, we'll need to figure out how to increase the writing of books, especially novels. Can we emulate Japan? Yes. But the secret to getting young people excited about books isn't about taking our existing published books and formatting them for cell phones. Instead, we need to figure out how to let readers publish their own books in a way that can reach a mass audience -- not just on obscure blogs, but on all media: print, online, audio and, yes, even cell phones.

POPSAmazon Buys Audible Amazon is really becoming a force in the audio business. Last year they launched their MP3 music store, and they've been building on it ever since. The company is really starting to pose a major threat to the dominance of Apple's iTunes music store.
