POPS'Bin Laden' tape harangues Obama "If you stop the war, then fine. Otherwise we will have no choice but to continue our war of attrition on every front If you choose safety and stopping wars, as opinion polls show you do, then we are ready to respond to this," it says. In the message, the al-Qaeda leader accuses the new president of failing to fundamentally change foreign policy because of his decision to retain key figures from the previous administration, including Defence Secretary Robert Gates.

POPSFreeing A Runner "The surgery was not without costs. Van Deren struggles to remember people she recently met and has missed flights simply by getting too involved in a conversation at the gate. “She never remembers where she parked,” Page said. “Never, not once, to this day.”

POPSWisconsin Lawmakers Consider Lowering Hunting Age to 10 The way the law stands, the 10 year old is just with a parent or guardian, who is the one hunting. And once in a while, this youngster would be allowed to hold the firearm and aim and shoot it at the parents/ guardians discretion. I used to hunt with my father in situations similar to this and it never occurred to me to mishandle a firearm. His gun was always in the closet and I never touched it without his permission. Several reason I obeyed--he was my father and the gun wasn't mine to handle. Period.

POPSTwitter's high attrition rate This is very interesting - and significant in my opinion. Could you imagine if many of the people who hoarded onto twitter to give it a peak actually find it boring and don't end up using it much. Wouldn't shock me.

POPSWe 'Hope' Spending Will Lift Us Out Of Debt If Barack Obama was truly serious about helping the economy, he would push across-the-board cuts for all federal agencies not directly involved basic safety and security, impose a government hiring freeze so that the size of the government would shrink through natural attrition, and lower various taxes so that companies would be encouraged to grow their businesses. Such a plan isn't too far off from what I've heard some conservative Democrats and Republicans are promoting. But I don't think Barack Obama really cares all that much about getting America out of this recession. He seems far more interested in using the economy as a weapon of fear to impose an ideological agenda. I hope he enjoys the euphoria of his brief popularity while it lasts. It is melting rapidly, and unlikely to last the coming spring thaw.

POPSGeneral Barry McCaffrey (ret) Says More Troops Aren't The Answer In Afghanistan
More ominously, the general says, we can expect a Taliban drive to erase Afghanistan's border with Pakistan in the wild frontier provinces of Pakistan that have provided sanctuary for Taliban and al Qaida leaders and fighters since Osama bin Laden escaped there in 2001. Military means, he writes, won't be enough to counter terror created by resurgent Taliban forces; we can't win with a war of attrition; and the economic and political support from the international community is inadequate. The battle will only be won, McCaffrey says, when there's a real Afghan police presence in all of the country's 34 provinces and 398 districts; when the Afghan National Army is expanded from 80,000 troops today to 200,000 troops; when we deploy five U.S. combat engineer battalions with a brigade of Army Stryker forces for security to begin a five-year road building program that also trains Afghan Army engineer units and employs Afghan contractors and workers.

POPSLessons of Vietnam Lost on McCain Given how McCain feels about Vietnam, we can assume that the concept of a "lost cause" is alien to the man's mind. Like Vietnam, there is no winning -- it was doomed from day one. Logic dictates that wars without purpose can't be won, because there's no objective to achieve, Not a realistic ones, anyway. For McCain, it's all about winning or losing, not whether anything we're doing makes any damned sense at all. He seems to think that admitting a mistake is akin to forfeiting a football game by quitting in the middle of it. He doesn't seem capable of considering foreign policy objectively or realistically.

POPSDefending Israel to the 'End Times' Rosenberg appears to believe that if a peace deal is concluded, it will not contradict Biblical prophesy: "While . . . Matthew 24 and Luke 21 indicate that there will be wars, rumors of wars and revolutions in the Middle East in the last days, Ezekiel 38 also indicates that for a season at least the Jews will be living 'securely' in the land prior to the apocalyptic War of Gog & Magog (the Russian-Iranian alliance to destroy Israel)." Netanyahu said that 'In a war of attrition the enemy strikes and you react, the enemy strikes harder and you retaliate harder. This gradual increase in violence is the antithesis of deterrence. . . . Deterrence always means using disproportionate force. We need to move from a concept of attrition to one of tough deterrence that will eventually lead to the removal of the Hamas regime, because as long as it exists it will continue arming itself and continue its attacks.'
