Public Health Plan Covers FEW
kareval
by kareval  11-1-2009    3
"The public option is a significant issue, but its place in the debate is completely out of proportion to its actual importance to consumers," said Drew Altman, president of the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation. "It has sucked all the oxygen out of the room and diverted attention from bread-and-butter consumer issues, such as affordable coverage and comprehensive benefits." The Democratic health care bills would extend coverage to the uninsured by providing government help with premiums and prohibiting insurers from excluding people in poor health or charging them more. But to keep from piling more on the federal deficit, most of the uninsured will have to wait until 2013 for help. Even then, many will have to pay a significant share of their own health care costs. The latest look at the public option comes from the Congressional Budget Office, the nonpartisan economic analysts for lawmakers. It found that the scaled back government plan in the House bill wouldn't overtake

Schoolgirl, 15, watches in horror as hoodie stamps on her tiny puppy's head and kills it
foxyarse
by foxyarse  10-28-2009    6
She said: 'I'm devastated. It was such a shock - Sandy was a lovely puppy. Enlarge Sandy the puppy who was killed by a group of yobs 'She wandered over to three boys wagging her tail and one of them just put his foot out and trampled on her head. 'She was very well behaved and one of those things you can't replace. I am very angry.' Her mother, Loretta, 45, heard April screaming and crying after the incident and found her sitting on the kerb sobbing. She said: 'It is unbelievable. How could someone do something like that?' Grandmother Norma Peachey, 72, from Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, added: 'It is despicable. Sandy was such a little dear - so tiny she could have fitted in a coffee cup.'

Alternative to ADHD Drugs
katsteevns
by katsteevns  10-16-2009    1
The Alternative Rx: Transcendental Meditation (TM). In the first study on ADHD and TM, middle-school-age children who did twice daily nonreligious meditations for 10 minutes reduced their stress levels by over 50 percent–resulting in fewer ADHD symptoms. “TM helps children focus on a special mantra or sound, which helps the child transcend mental busyness and stress,” says Sarina Grosswald, EdD, coauthor of the study. “This allows the child’s body to completely relax and his mind to stay fully awake without effort. The results are improved behavior, grades, creativity, and inner stability.”

CBO: Medical Liability Reform--Saving $54 Billion in 10 Years!
merrie
by merrie  10-9-2009    1
 “It’s a sad reality that our doctors do a delicate balancing act of choosing what’s best for patients while also trying to deflect frivolous lawsuits. It has created an unwinnable cycle of unnecessary tests and procedures and costs which are spiraling up and out of control. The time to set our healthcare system right again is now and these CBO findings show that we literally can’t afford not to take action.” The tort reforms identified by CBO as contributing to these significant savings include: * A cap of $250,000 on awards for noneconomic damages; * A cap on awards for punitive damages of $500,000 or two times the award for economic damages, whichever is greater; * Modification of the “collateral source” rule to allow evidence of income from such sources as health and life insurance, workers’ compensation, and automobile insurance to be introduced at trials or to require that such income be subtracted from awards decided by juries;

Dr. Andrew Moulden (Interview): What You Were Never Told About Vaccines
The Infowarrior

" 7.) You speak of epidemics. What is your understanding of an epidemic? How does it manifest? The explanation of epidemic is simple, we are now seeing: 1 in 6 children with specific learning disabilities. 12-15% children with attention deficit disorder. 1 in 87 with autism spectrum – a 1700% increase over ten years. 1% sudden infant death 40 deaths and 15,000 substantive adverse Gardasil reactions 1 in 15 over 65 with dementia; 1 in 8 over 85 Chronic fatigue syndrome Fibromyalgia Seizure disorders “West” syndrome Global developmental delay 1 in 450 with type 1 diabetes 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer over a lifetime. Gulf war syndrome affecting and disabling 250,000 troops and 42,000 deaths. These vaccinated soldiers show the exact same neurological damages after vaccination as the infants and children are exhibiting after each childhood vaccination. These are strokes – oxygen demand exceeding oxygen supply – conclusively! This is just the tip of

Your Child's ADHD Brain
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  9-15-2009
Why is that children diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder cannot do their homework, follow through on a chore but can play a video game for hours? The answer, according to this insightful article about the ADHD child's brain, suggests that focused attention, like playing a video game is more highly rewarding to the the child with attentional problems. This increases brain chemicals that stimulate attention and concentration. The other useful point, not explicitly stated in this article, is that this behavior may not be purely manipulation as parents often assume! The reality is that ADHD children are much more difficult to be motivated and rewarded. The better parents and teachers are at getting children engaged the more likely the success of completing a task. Anyone, regardless of their attention abilities, get bored with repetitive tasks like taking out the garbage or practicing vocabulary words. Medications help children compensate for this deficit in their reward trigg

House 'Blue Dogs' Flex New Muscle on Health Care
merrie

to the deficit, may be just a coincidence. But it also could be a carrot that Obama and Democratic leaders hope will attract some Blue Dog votes for the health care overhaul. That bill appeared to be on track until last week, when Douglas Elmendorf, the director of the Congressional Budget Office, said it lacked steps to control the costs of health care in the future, one of the Blue Dogs' biggest concerns. Meetings on the health care bill between the Blue Dogs, Democratic leaders and the White House are continuing. Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., said he spent much of Wednesday in closed-door negotiations with Waxman and planned to resume them Thursday. "We didn't get an agreement," Ross said after Wednesday's meeting, adding that Obama's goal to have a bill passed by mid-August wasn't part of the talks. "I refused to discuss any artificial deadlines," Ross said. "That's not part of the talks."

Obama's Risky Debt
merrie
by merrie  5-20-2009    2
But wait: Even these totals may be understated. By various estimates, Obama's health plan might cost $1.2 trillion over a decade; Obama has budgeted only $635 billion. Next, the huge deficits occur despite a pronounced squeeze of defense spending. From 2008 to 2019, total federal spending would rise 75 percent, but defense spending would increase only 17 percent. Unless foreign threats recede, military spending and deficits might both grow. Except from crabby Republicans, these astonishing numbers have received little attention -- a tribute to Obama's Zen-like capacity to discourage serious criticism. Beyond the undeserving who make more than $250,000, 95 percent of "working families" receive a tax cut. Obama would double federal spending for basic research in "key agencies." He wants to build high-speed-rail networks that would require continuous subsidy. Obama can do all this and more by borrowing.
