False Premises
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  Today 1:24 PM
I often come across people attempting to argue that atheism is some sort of a creed or even a religion. This clip touches on why this simply isn't the case. The article itself goes into much greater detail.

Lieberman Would Address RNC
Wisco
by Wisco  Today 12:54 PM
My take? This is Lieberman's final term. He's not going to run in 2012. Mostly because he can't; he's completely destroyed his career as a public servant. In an '06 do-over, polls show Holy Joe would lose in a landslide to Lamont.

US and Iran "Diplomacy" Starts--"Good Cop" Tactic
blueridge
by blueridge  Yesterday 12:02 AM
But coercing Iran to stop its nuclear enrichment program is the goal. So earlier we saw "bad cop" war games and rhetoric by US and Israel, and now this multinational "diplomacy" will play "good cop", to force the will of the US and Israel on Iran. That is not diplomacy, and the shift is temporary, for the election season. The result (which might be a goal too) will be that the oil traders will sell and lower oil prices will come (as they already did on first news of this), and this game will probably be played between now and Nov. 5th (to help McCain), and then the war-mongering will start again, and possibly an attack by Israel ( per neocon John Bolton's clipmark earlier ) to force the next President's hand into the conflict. Bush does not change from his neocon advisers blueprint. This pragmatism is for political expediency and economic benefit for election season purposes.

8 Afghan Civilians Killed in US Attack

The mass-murder continues unabated of those unfortunate souls around the world whose lives are worthless to the USA. Some will say this is another mistake - mistake No. 2,000,000. When a society continues killing by "mistake," we can draw only one conclusion: that the "mistakes" are intentional.

Gore Less Welcome When Gas Costs 4 Bucks
merrie
by merrie  7-17-2008    2
Some lawmakers warn that Americans are angry about gas prices and don’t necessarily want to be reminded about the economic sacrifices that may be necessary to reduce the nation’s oil consumption. “People’s anger about a lot of things is crystallized as a result of the gas prices,” said Lautenberg. “The anger is focused by the visibility at the pump.” Lautenberg warned that Americans aren’t eager to hear about the need for more financial sacrifices if there’s not a possible reward in the not-too-distant future. “If it looks like it’s just a continuation of an attack of our economy and family budgets, then its starts getting dispiriting,” he said of innovative yet expensive energy proposals.

World of Warcraft, Zygor Guides
robbby40
by robbby40   7-16-2008
Zygors 1 to 70 Alliance and Horde Guide seems to be making a bit of a splash in the World of Warcraft leveling guide world, lol. Zygor Guides have taken the the idea of a world of warcraft guide and taken it to another level. They have done this by banishing the Alt-tab function, which takes you out of the game. Players use this to find the answers to Quests, find coordinates, who to talk with to accept quests etc etc. Basically your average player who wonders how the hell peeps level to 70 in under 8 days, spends a huge amount of time sourcing info when they should be playing. This is where Zygors 1 to 70 Alliance and Horde Guide allows your average joe bloggs to become like the power leveler. They stay in game, never having to leave to source the info that they need to skyrocket themselves from 1 to 70. Consider this guide if you are looking to rocket your leveling times or you really want to explore and enjoy the full realm of WOW classes. An awesome guide as the article st

Achilles Heel Of HIV Found?
Mohir
by Mohir  7-16-2008    3
“Unlike the changeable regions of its envelope, HIV needs at least one region that must remain constant to attach to cells. If this region changes, HIV cannot infect cells. Equally important, HIV does not want this constant region to provoke the body’s defense system. So, HIV uses the same constant cellular attachment site to silence B lymphocytes - the antibody producing cells. The result is that the body is fooled into making abundant antibodies to the changeable regions of HIV but not to its cellular attachment site. Immunologists call such regions superantigens. HIV’s cleverness is unmatched. No other virus uses this trick to evade the body’s defenses.” Paul’s group has engineered antibodies with enzymatic activity, also known as abzymes, which can attack the Achilles heel of the virus in a precise way. “The abzymes recognize essentially all of the diverse HIV forms found across the world. This solves the problem of HIV changeability. The next step is to confirm our theory in huma

Legal right to defend oneself?
notareargunner
by notareargunner  7-16-2008
This headline concerns me. We have always had the right to use reasonable force in certain circumstances. The problem, as I see it, is poor legal advice. When the Everton centre forward Duncan Ferguson was acquitted not once, but twice, for defending his property and family, it was good advocacy that kept his out of prison even though he has a record and past prison life for assault. What is good for Ferguson should be good for every individual defending himself and others against attack. Poor advocacy is a problem, not just in the UK but everywhere in this commercial world, where the poor get inferior service to those with full wallets.

UPDATE: Israel Moves Prisoners, Bodies Ahead Of Swap
merrie
by merrie  7-16-2008    5
Although polls show Israelis solidly endorse the exchange, many see Kantar as the embodiment of evil. In the dead of night on April 22, 1979, Kantar and three other gunmen made their way in a rubber dinghy from Lebanon to the sleepy Israeli coastal town of Nahariya, five miles south of the border. There, in a hail of gunfire and exploding grenades, they killed a policeman who stumbled upon them, then burst into the apartment of Danny Haran, herding him and his 4-year-old daughter out of the house at gunpoint to the beach below, where they were killed. The attack is seared in Israel's collective consciousness because witnesses recounted that Kantar shot Danny Haran in front of his child, then killed her by smashing her skull against a rock with his rifle butt. Israel held on to Kantar for decades, hoping to use him as a bargaining chip to wring some information about missing Israeli airman, Ron Arad. Hezbollah relayed a report to Israel about Arad........

Mullen Presents Medals For Valor To 12 Paratroopers In Afghanistan
merrie
by merrie  7-16-2008    1
“We spotted an enemy scout and eventually made contact, but he was able to our location to other fighters in the valley,” Ambrosia said. Ambrosia’s element had a translator monitoring the enemy communication with a basic one-way radio. The interpreter continued to monitor the radio, and Ambrosia learned that the scout was coordinating with other enemy fighters in the area to launch an attack. Soon there were at least three enemy elements with three to five fighters each closing in on the platoon. So close, in fact, they were in hand-grenade range of his troops, he said. “At one point, I started calling the vehicles in the valley to start shooting on our position, because the enemy was too close to call in artillery or mortar fire.” Enemy radio traffic intercepted by Ambrosia’s interpreter let the paratroopers know the insurgents planned to overrun their position and take them hostage, but they were able to repel the attack, he said.............

How Chuck Schumer Set Off A Bank Panic
merrie
by merrie  7-15-2008    4
or employee of a bank which Schumer decides to attack. Indymac Bank was having trouble, of course, before, but nothing as serious as a bank run. Bank runs, after all, are very rare in modern history. So why a 30s style bank panic now? Why Indymac? Because the left hated them. Indymac has been in the crosshairs for some time. The trial lawyers started going after them about a month ago. Not long after that, Schumer started sending letters to regulators attacking Indymac, questioning the financial viability of a bank which he had never examined. Neither Schumer, nor any of his staff even bothered to contact Indymac with any questions. Unsatisfied with the response, Schumer leaked his letters to the press. The local paper in Pasadena (where the bank is located) played along, and ran the story with a headline strongly suggesting insolvency. Of course, the next day depositors lined up at the door and started withdrawing money. Over the next 11 days, $1.3 billion came out. Indymac.
