POPSPEW Survey Prompts Questions As I noted in a previous clip the PEW Survey claims that 1 in 5 atheists believes in god. I remarked at that time that this simply doesn't make sense. In this clip (and the appended comments) several people suggest reasons why this might have happened.

POPSReligion in the US: Abortion and Evolutuion Pro-choice and pro-evolution persons hold a slim majority in the US, which probably is no surprise to keen observers of US culture. They have long known that pro-lifers aren't much for evolving as well.

POPSUS Religiosity and Belief 71% are absolutely certain that a being exists that they can neither verfiably see, touch, hear, taste nor detect through any technology however sophisticated. And 20% of all self-described "atheists" are mororns since they claim to believe in God. Most people believe in heaven but a decreasing number believe hell as an after life experience. Had Pew asked the respondents if hell was the Bush presidency, I'm confident believe in hell would have had an instant revival.

POPSFood for Thought One statistic that stood out to me was the strange 1 in 5 self professed atheists that claim to believe in God. Atheism is conventionally defined as holding no belief in a god or gods.

POPS A word for nonbelievers Very social creatures, we humans. I suppose you develop the siege mentality when you happily rearrange your world and chop out a huge slice of your upbringing. This group would help people like me, if I hadn't had 40 years to work it out.

POPSState religion... Why is the state authorizing a sectarian license plate? I hope the Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Atheists all protest this one and take the state to court. Legislatures have more important stuff to do than this...

POPSAtheists aren't skeptical enough and... ...the best skeptics are actually theists. The agnostics ski down the mountain into the woods, searching for hard evidence on the basis of which to decide whether God exists—which is very odd, given that a moment ago they were standing here with us, ready to climb as declared skeptics. Agnostics, plainly, are wafflers in their skepticism: As the team gets going, they U-turn back to the foothills, where every true skeptic says there is nothing to find. They do not care about the truth. But even more astonishing than that, the atheists have just gone home. They are not down in the valley looking for evidence; they are not looking at all. They have packed in the science without lifting a boot, as if the summit were already taken, the question answered.

POPSThe "Respectful" Archbishop "Faithless societies" = societies that are ripe for "oppression". Is he on drugs? A faith based society is by definition an oppressed society.
