Interesting. Quite short article but difficult to encapsulate in a clip. The article refers mainly to political rhetoric and to observing medicalised patients over time. It does not factor in emotional lability which often removes the degree of conscious control over expression.

Judge Says Hyperlinks Should Be Banned to Save Newspapers
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-2-2009    1
Gawker’s Hamilton Nolan: No linking or paraphrasing? Let's Screw Up the Entire Internet to Save Newspapers! You can copyright a news story, but you can't copyright the news. "The news" just means "things that happen in the world." What would it mean, in practice, to make it illegal to paraphrase a copyrighted news story? Summing up, for example, political events, or a sports controversy, or even a fashion trend, could be interpreted as paraphrasing copyrighted material. So let's ban talking about anything. And banning links will help us make our references even more obscure, by making it impossible for anyone to refer to source materials! Good idea, Posner.

No More "Free" Internet
Moliticon
by Moliticon  6-11-2009
(Cont) Inevitably, Diller said, the “base model” of the Internet will be paid, at the end of the chaos. The forms will include not just subscriptions and individual one-time purchases, but rapid-fire micropayments and other mechanisms. The early examples: Amazon’s “one-click” system, where a customer enters billing address and credit card information in advance. Then, a button on the screen for a shopping cart is pressed once and the purchase or purchases associated with that cart are confirmed, billed, paid for and delivered.

Decoding the brain's response to vocal emotions
einbar
by einbar  5-27-2009
"We recognize emotions in others by observing their body language and facial expressions. The voice also betrays one's emotional state: words spoken in anger have a different rhythm, stress and intonation than those uttered with a sense of joy or relief. But how the emotional content of a voice is encoded in the brain was unclear. Now though, Swiss researchers report that they have decoded the neural activity in the voice-sensitive regions of the brain'

“Thinking about Not-Thinking”: Neural Correlates of Conceptual Processing during Zen Meditation
einbar
by einbar  9-20-2008    1
While behavioral performance did not differ between groups, Zen practitioners displayed a reduced duration of the neural response linked to conceptual processing in regions of the default network, suggesting that "meditative training may foster the ability to control the automatic cascade of semantic associations triggered by a stimulus and, by extension, to voluntarily regulate the flow of spontaneous mentation."
