POPSFood of the week: Cauliflower Cauliflower traces its ancestry to the wild cabbage, a plant thought to have originated in ancient Asia Minor, which resembled kale or collards more than the vegetable that we now know it to be. The cauliflower went through many transformations and reappeared in the Mediterranean region, where it has been an important vegetable in Turkey and Italy since at least 600 B.C. It gained popularity in France in the mid-16th century and was subsequently cultivated in Northern Europe and the British Isles. The United States, France, Italy, India and China are countries that produce significant amounts of cauliflower.

POPSNorman Borlaug: 'The Man Who Saved The World' more ( at source): Yet his work had a far-reaching impact on the lives of millions of people in developing countries. His breeding of high-yielding crop varieties helped to avert mass famines that were widely predicted in the 1960s, altering the course of history. Largely because of his work, countries that had been food deficient, like Mexico and India, became self-sufficient in producing cereal grains. “More than any other single person of this age, he has helped provide bread for a hungry world,” the Nobel committee said in presenting him with the Peace Prize. “We have made this choice in the hope that providing bread will also give the world peace.”

POPSReader's Digest plans to file for bankruptcy
"The Chapter 11 filing will apply only to the company's U.S. businesses. Its operations in Canada, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia-New Zealand will not be affected. "Restructuring our debt will enable us to have the financial flexibility to move ahead with our growth and transformational initiatives," said President and Chief Executive Officer Mary Berner, in a statement." The Pleasantville, N.Y., media company said the bankruptcy would help facilitate an agreement with lenders to exchange a portion of its $1.6 billion in senior secured debt for equity, and transfer company ownership to the lender group. --- "The agreement, which is subject to court approval, also includes a commitment from some members of the senior lender group to provide $150 million in debtor-in-possession financing, which would help fund operations during the reorganization. The pre-arranged plan proposes to cut debt by 75 percent to $550 million, from the current $2.2 billion."

POPSAlcoholic Rats Show Kudzu May Help Addicted Humans Though kudzu extract is already available in health food stores, "it's not a good drug," said study leader Ivan Diamond, vice president of Gilead Sciences, a biopharmaceutical company that is working to develop a kudzu-based compound for humans. That's because kudzu extract—unregulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration—is poorly absorbed by the body and its concentration varies wildly from bottle to bottle, he said. ~~~~~~~~~~~ OR -- a "good excuse" to let the pharmaceutical companies control it, thereby increasing their profits even more.

Zinni, a retired Marine and the former head of the Central Command, wrote recently in a report he prepared as a member of a military advisory board on energy and climate at CNA, a private group that does research for the Navy. “We will pay to reduce greenhouse gas emissions today, and we’ll have to take an economic hit of some kind. “Or we will pay the price later in military terms,” he warned. “And that will involve human lives.”

POPSWorld hunger 'hits one billion' When faced with starvation, laws don't matter. Look at New Orleans, Maccas ran out of food and the trouble began. Maybe if they get their economies free of mining companies and set up dictators, there might not be invasions. I wonder who will comment that the US will blow away starving refugees/invaders, conveniently forgetting the fact that it is already happening there.

POPSVoyage to the center of the “Plastic Vortex” It has been clipped here before, but I think it is important for us to keep it in our conscience. An expedition is being put together to determine how best to remove as much of it as possible and what can be done with it once it is removed. The action of breaking down the plastic is leaching toxic chemicals into the water plus marine wildlife is eating the little toxic pieces. "The real fix is back on land. We need to provide the means, globally, to care for our disposable waste," said Jim Dufour, a senior engineer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California, who is advising the trip.
