Afraid of Winter Depression? Go Mediterranean
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  11-19-2009    1
The role of the overall dietary pattern may be more important than the effect of single components. It is plausible that the synergistic combination of a sufficient provision of omega-three fatty acids together with other natural unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants from olive oil and nuts, flavonoids and other phytochemicals from fruit and other plant foods and large amounts of natural folates and other B vitamins in the overall Mediterranean dietary pattern may exert a fair degree of protection against depression.

Running Doc: PLEASE "do the aspirin"!
Lexica
by Lexica  11-17-2009
More: Now, it's true that one case doesn’t prove anything. The International Marathon Medical Directors Association is meeting in March 2010 to develop a multi-city, multi-country research project. It may be that all runners develop high serum myoglobins, since they clear quickly (sometime within one day) -- but they also interact in the body, creating a cascade of other inflammatory elevations that may be markers of risk and may help us to get a better handle on SCD. As Dr. Siegel says: “Like the runner herein, these SCD victims during races can be saved. But wouldn't it make even more sense to try to prevent the SCD's in the first place? Taking aspirin may just do the trick." You can help us make this research project "smarter." If you happen to visit your doctor within 24 hours after finishing a full or half-marathon, please bring a copy of this post with you, record the information below, then e-mail the results to us

Right Wing News: Kneecapping Barack Obama at every opportunity
keeth
by keeth  10-20-2009    1
Knee-capping is a form of malicious wounding, often as extralegal punishment or torture, in which the victim is injured in the knee, usually using a firearm, and in some cases a power drill to damage the knee joint and kneecap. This practice was common among paramilitaries in Italy and Northern Ireland and has been reported from Gaza. Contrary to popular belief, the patella is usually not injured in these incidents; rather damage to soft tissues that include nerves and arteries is the primary target.

What Is Angina?
Socratoad
by Socratoad  9-22-2009
Overview It's thought that nearly 7 million people in the United States suffer from angina. About 400,000 patients go to their doctors with new cases of angina every year. Angina occurs equally in men and women. It can be a sign of heart disease, even when initial tests don't show evidence of CAD. Not all chest pain or discomfort is angina. A heart attack, lung problems (such as an infection or a blood clot), heartburn, or a panic attack also can cause chest pain or discomfort. All chest pain should be checked by a doctor.

Aspirin and Heart Attacks
parkeremily10
by parkeremily10  9-15-2009
Aspirin may prevent blood clots from forming in the arteries of the heart, the primary cause of heart attacks in patients with coronary heart disease. I recommend taking a baby aspirin (81 mg) once daily–higher doses aren’t more effective and cause more side effects such as bleeding.

"Nanobees sting cancer cells to death"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-11-2009    1
more: The nanobees are made of perfluorocarbon, an inert material used in artificial blood. Dr Wickline's team has been investigating their use in various medical applications, including the diagnosis and treatment of narrowed arteries and cancer. The nanoparticles are large enough to carry thousands of active compounds, yet small enough to pass easily through the bloodstream and attach to cell membranes. Melittin injected directly into the bloodstream would cause widespread destruction of red blood cells. But attached to the nanobees, blood cells and other tissues are protected from the toxin's effects.
