800,000 Americans Busted Annually for Pot
foxyarse
by foxyarse  11-11-2009    2
They argue the drug war “is doing far more harm than marijuana itself ever will,” because * it diverts hundreds of thousands of police agents from serious crimes “to the pursuit of harmless tokers”; * it costs taxpayers at minimum $10 billion a year to catch, prosecute, and incarcerate marijuana users and sellers; * it enables government to snatch the cars, money, computers and other properties of people caught up in drug raids even if they have had no charges filed against them; and * it allows “police agents at all levels to trample our Bill of Rights in their eagerness to nab pot consumers.” The drug war has also unleashed a torrent of racism in the form of unjust sentencing, which confines crack-cocaine users who are mostly black to prison for longer terms than powder snorters, who are mostly white. Hightower and Frazer say authorities have perverted the infamous “Patriot Act” of 2001 for use in non-terrorism cases, allowing “sneak-and-peak” search warra

5 now in custody in Richmond High gang rape
ofcapri
by ofcapri  10-29-2009    2
Follow up on previous rape clip I posted. This is one of the most appalling clips I have posted and I was even hesitant in posting it but people have got to be aware of this kind of crime and what happens right here in this country. The clip is not only appalling but the actions of the people that witnessed the rape are as guilty as the people who committed the crime. I just don't understand that not even one person would not come to the aid of this poor girl. I fear that poor girl will never recover to any state of normalcy after what has happened to her. My heart certainly goes out to her and her family. How to help Richmond High School is accepting cards and donations for the victim and her family. They can be mailed to the school at 1250 23rd St., Richmond, CA 94804-1011. Make checks out to the Richmond High Student Fund. US Press Freedom Improves
sahara
by sahara  10-21-2009
At the bottom of the list were Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea "where media are so suppressed they are nonexistent," said Reporters Without Borders. Iran dropped to No. 172 from No. 166, with Reporters Without Borders saying the disputed reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had fostered a paranoia about journalists and bloggers. "Automatic prior censorship, state surveillance of journalists, mistreatment, journalists forced to flee the country, illegal arrests and imprisonment -- such is the state of press freedom this year in Iran," the group said. The ranking was compiled from hundreds of questionnaires completed by journalists and media experts around the world and reflecting press freedom violations that took place between Sept. 1, 2008 and Aug. 31, 2009. The complete ranking can be seen at www.rsf.org/en-classement1003-2009.html Read more at source.

Obama Administration Will Not Seek Arrests For People Following State Laws California is unique among those for the widespread presence of dispensaries " businesses that sell marijuana and even advertise their services. Colorado also has several dispensaries, and Rhode Island and New Mexico are in the process of licensing providers, according to the Marijuana Policy Project, a group that promotes the decriminalization of marijuana use. Pot Legalization Gains Momentum In California
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  10-8-2009    3
More: But some legal scholars and policy analysts say the government will not be able to require California to help in enforcing the federal marijuana ban if the state legalizes the drug. Without assistance from the state's legions of narcotics officers, they say, federal agents could do little to curb marijuana in California. "Even though that federal ban is still in place and the federal government can enforce it, it doesn't mean the states have to follow suit," said Robert Mikos, a Vanderbilt University law professor who recently published a paper about the issue. Nothing can stop federal anti-drug agents from making marijuana arrests, even if Californians legalize pot, he said. However, the U.S. government cannot pass a law requiring local and state police, sheriff's departments or state narcotics enforcers to help. That is significant, because nearly all arrests for marijuana crimes are made at the state level. (Emph. mine)

Anatomy of a Soccer [Football] Player

Of course, nobody is saying that football hooliganism is cool, what really gets our goat is that while TV networks will report on instances of hooliganism, they never have the nuance to tell us who won. For those of us who like to watch football riots, the only way of judging is by measuring which side conceded the most arrests. The higher the arrest count, the more honorable the victory.

New Berkeley Law Study Finds Enforcement of Immigration Laws Led to Racial Profiling

The new report, “The CAP Effect: Racial Profiling in the ICE Criminal Alien Program,” was released today by the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Race, Ethnicity and Diversity (Warren Institute) at UC Berkeley School of Law (Berkeley Law). “It was clearly a fishing expedition. Police cast a wide net to arrest anyone who looked Hispanic for any minor violation,” said report co-author Aarti Kohli, immigration policy expert at Berkeley Law’s Warren Institute. “The Hispanic community suspected racial profiling as the root cause of the increase in arrests. Our report backs that up.”
