POPSMarijuana War Up in Smoke!
California here we come! --- An exodus similar to the Great Depression will soon be heading west. Go West, young person, there you will find a new world. But, seriously....the hypocracy of the nation pushing booze and pills massively on TV everyday, while sending pot smokers to jail, is at a turning point. The turning point is that the U.S. will stop using federal law to arrest individual marijuana consumers. This allows each of the 50-states to set their own laws about it...sort of like the idea of our Constitution and democracy intended -- prior to evil leaders trying to use a "War on Drugs," as as excuse before the "Global War on Terrorism," came along. 14 states have already made personal consumption of marijuana a non-criminal offense (so no need to rush out to northern California...although it's thriving out there, no doubt) These states did this change even though it was moot ---- till now. Now, it's not "moot." - more states (like mine) now seeking ballot init

POPSHappy (belated) 95th birthday to Jack LaLanne! More: The seeming futility of shaping up the world does not daunt him. "I never think about that," LaLanne says. "I think about things that I can improve." One thing he can always improve is himself. LaLanne works out two hours a day, mostly swimming and lifting weights… "I work at living," he says, leaning close and squeezing an arm. "Most people work at dying. Dying's easy." One of LaLanne's most effective sales devices has been his amazing feats of strength. When Arnold Schwarzenegger came to America in 1968 and became an instant sensation on the Southern California muscle scene, LaLanne challenged the kid to a duel at Muscle Beach. The Austrian Oak was 21; the Oakland Oak was 54. "I beat him in chin-ups and push-ups," LaLanne says. "He said, 'That Jack LaLanne's an animal! I was sore for four days. I couldn't lift my arms!' " At age 70, handcuffed, LaLanne towed 70 loaded boats 1.5 miles in Long Beach Harbor.

POPS Investigate Jerry Brown It’s a bad sign, to say the least, when the chief law enforcement officer of a state is actually helping an entity that is running afoul of multiple laws. In fact, that should be career ending, which may explain his motives for going after the two young filmmakers in his investigation. Factor in, if you will, the continuously emerging evidence that ACORN is an entity that has been actively engaging in partisan political activity favorable to Jerry Brown-types. Brown’s office released a letter stating in part, "The Attorney General shares your concerns and he takes seriously his obligation to see that the laws of California are uniformly and adequately enforced." Uh-huh. Did I mention Jerry Brown wants to be governor of California? Thoroughly and professionally investigating ACORN could hurt his get-out-the-vote efforts, and certainly might affect its vast network’s endorsement of him. by Mark J. Fitzgibbons

POPSHigh court says California can't raid transit funds More: In their latest budget action, the governor and the Legislature approved a plan in July to close a $24 billion deficit, in part by siphoning $138 million from the public transit account to the Department of Developmental Services to pay for transporting developmentally disabled persons to regional centers. The July plan also counted on taking $254 million from public transit to repay transportation bond debt payments. In addition, the plan counted on shifting $622 million in transit funds to the general fund to pay for the previous year's debt service. The refusal of the Supreme Court to hear the appeal could push California's precariously balanced budget immediately into the red. Before losing this lawsuit, the state was already $200 million short.

POPSSchwarzenegger Challenges Mother Nature To A Fight The governor ultimately decided against his plan - although he did successfully put out a small fire by squeezing it between his bicep. Instead Schwarzenegger is going straight to the source. "Mother nature will pay. I will grab her puny ankles and shake her until money falls out." At that moment Schwarzenegger turned to a camera and said, "now that's change we can believe in."

POPSLA-area blaze size doubles, threatens 12,000 homes In Mariposa County, a nearly 7-square-mile fire burned in Yosemite National Park ~~~ An animal sanctuary called the Roar Foundation Shambala Preserve, six miles east of Acton, was in the mandatory evacuation zone, but fire officials decided removing the animals would be "a logistical nightmare," said Chris Gallucci, vice president of operations. ~~~~~ flames about a half-mile away from the communications and astronomy centers on Mount Wilson ~~~~~ which hold transmitters for more than 20 television stations, many radio stations and cell phone providers. ~~~~ Television stations said if the antennas burn, broadcast signals would be affected but satellite and cable transmissions would not be. Two giant telescopes and several multimillion-dollar university programs are housed in the century-old Mount Wilson Observatory. The complex of buildings is both a historic landmark and a thriving modern center for astronomy.

POPSCA is finally showing fiscal responsibility! Finally, some good news for our local economy: it seems that California is at long last curtailing some of its social spending, without also increasing taxes as it struggles to balance its budget. Yay! It almost makes me want to go out and celebrate! But.. I'll wait until there is some real, positive cash flow!
