POPSThe New Side Effect Of Watching TV Researchers at Boston University's School of Public Health have determined that the dust on our TVs is the largest source of chemical flame retardants, traces of which are found in most Americans. Scientists are concerned about the synthetic chemical because it's been shown to harm the nervous system and alter the hormones and development of reproductive organs of animals. The most common type has also been linked to cancer in lab rats. While it's always a leap to apply findings from animal studies to humans, this is an interesting finding and one most people probably never considered. If it's got you worried, researchers suggest frequently washing your hands and dusting your house to combat the problem. If you're tempted to get rid of your TV, consider that the move will likely lead to environmental contamination and that flame retardants can travel lengthy distances in the air and water.

POPSThe Origin of Words You Hear at the Office "The original Middle English meaning of team was applied to a group of draft animals yoked together. Around 1828, someone thought of combining the word "team" with the word "work" - probably hoping to spur sluggish workers into action. So "teamwork" really means working like one of many beasts of burden. Depressing, huh?"

POPSMultidimensional space through art Generally for the sake of the illusion of 3 Dimensions and perspective. There are plenty of artists beside Escher that represent multidimensional space, but he does a particularly good job of it. The last stereogram at the bottom is the thinker. I ran out of characters. (you can always go to the site.) Stereograms can be annoying sometimes when you can't see what it is, and everyone else can. It can be like that, then suddenly one day a picture can jump out. It can help if you know what you're looking for. One problem with these may be looking too hard, when the eyes are probably better off relaxing.

2. "Vet" (Open on a short-haired, twentysomething YOUNG WOMAN as she puts on a white lab coat in an X-ray room. A door opens and a VETERINARIAN appears holding a domesticated white rabbit, which the VET pets as it purrs gently. She throws the YOUNG WOMAN a stethoscope.) VET: Now remember, people's animals are like members of their family. So it's important that we stress to them the gentle methods and safety precautions we employ while the pets are here in our supervision. Know what I mean? (Cut to the same YOUNG WOMAN at Abu Ghraib, smashing a prisoner in the face with the butt of her rifle, hogtying naked prisoners, posing in front of a naked dogpile of blindfolded prisoners with a "thumbs up" as a cigarette dangles from her lower lip. Cut back to the VET's office, where the YOUNG WOMAN responds.) YOUNG WOMAN: Yes, ma'am. (Accidentally laughs.) VET: What's so funny? YOUNG WOMAN: Nothing. Yeah, Be all you can be.

POPSChina bloggers cook up quake conspiracies In the city of Mianzhu, 60 miles from the epicentre, bloggers pointed to reports just weeks before the earthquake of a mass migration of more than one million butterflies. Other bloggers seized upon an as yet unsubstantiated rumour that a Chinese geologist had predicted the earthquake in advance but had been stifled by the authorities, and by fear. "On the seventh of May, a geologist predicted this ," wrote one blogger. "But he didn't dare make it public." Another blogger from Beijing wrote: “Everyone is talking about the rescue effort but they are not actually joining it. “So, instead we should turn our thoughts to why didn’t forecast the earthquake and evacuate the people... “Could it be that it was out of a desire for a peaceful Olympics?”

POPSIn Honor of Gary Larson I have a theory that most people who like animals fall into one of two categories, based on the nature of their interest. The first are the Jane Goodall types, who enjoy animals for their peaceful habits, for their gentleness, for their intelligence, and whatnot. I can respect that. Then there are those of us who grew up reading Gary Larson's Far Side. We have a very...specialized interest in animals. This quote, relating to the Duck Billed Platypus and courtesy of www.cracked.com perfectly illustrates my philosophical interest in animals of the platypus's timber. It is small. It is seemingly made up of nature's spare parts. It is still, nonetheless, capable of crippling you. Have a nice day, bipeds.

Have you no shame? 6) Time falling off clocks. Despite the widespread transition to digital, this is expected to remain a significant problem in the coming months, as the minute and hour hands alike are pulled down swiftly toward the poles of 6 and 12 (6 + 6). Inconclusive data is leading some scientists to conjecture the end of the world is near, and to encourage their lab assistants to experiment further with observed phenomenon No. 1. POPSPencil Art Evolves Into Unusual Sculptures Before pencils, Maestre was originally building with nails and a liquid rubber-type glue. She started to worry about inhaling all the toxic fumes, however, and began to experiment with different techniques until she settled on beading. Her method of choice? The peyote stitch. #3 In Watchtower, Maestre focuses on a more architectural form. Peer inside and you'll see a series of pencil struts spiraling up like a staircase in a tower. #4 Maestre was originally inspired by the push-pull reaction she had to sea urchins. #5 Hive is one of Mastre's unintentionally more suggestive sculptures. "Certain viewers find it a little obscene," she says. "Maybe because I used the pink eraser ends to outline the orifices." (OK?) #6 Some see a frog, others a gorilla, and some even an Egyptian mask. What does Threnody look like to you? Maestre may not know herself, but her primary goal was to convey the feeling of something howling.
