Mother In Law Crys Wolf/ Pet Gets Confiscated

by ljsdesign  10-21-2009    3
Ortiz showed pictures of Dakota to wolf expert Dave Mech. His e-mail opinion was, "Looks like a dog to me; possibly it has some wolf but hard to say." "My only hope is that the animal doesn't get destroyed ultimately," said Philipp. "Because it seems like the animal, whether it's a wolf or mixed-breed or whatever it is, seems to be, by all reports, a nice animal."

Hint of conservation push brightens whaling stalemate
papananook
by papananook  9-18-2009
"The best science is done by observing live whales in the marine environment, not figuring out how many you can sustainably kill," says Ramage. "We hope it will elicit other countries to participate," says Ramage. He added that encouragingly, the US and Norway had put forward a unanimously adopted resolution for countries to be more sensitive to the effects of climate change on whale and dolphin species. Ramage said that the IWC is undergoing a difficult transition, and hoped that Japan's proposal to be allowed to resume whaling in its own coastal waters would ultimately be rejected. "It would violate the ongoing moratorium, introduced in 1986," said Ramage. Discussions will continue over the coming year about the fate of the IWC, the subject of a review by the "small working group" – a panel of IWC representatives.

“Happy Cows” in California? Not with Schwarzenegger Around…
JackieDel
by JackieDel  9-8-2009
Despite having no arguments, Schwarzenegger has openly mocked this bill on his twitter page, along with making a video to prove his point, with the stance that no one should be bothering with cow tails when the economy is suffering. If signed into law, California would be the first state to ban tail docking in dairy cattle. You can contact the Governor’s office to urge him to sign the bill by emailing governor@governor.ca.gov or by calling 916-445-2841.

Has Japan's Dolphin Slaughter Been Prevented?
papananook
by papananook  9-3-2009
Today, the dolphin slaughter was set to begin in Taiji, but the tides there may have changed. Here's a dispatch from O'Barry who has just returned to Japan for the start of the killing season: When I got off the bus at the Cove this afternoon, I was accompanied by my son Lincoln O'Barry's film crew, a crew from Associated Press, Der Spiegel (the largest magazine in Germany), and the London Independent. No dolphins and no dolphin killers. We would not have had a story at all, except for the police who were there, waiting all day for us to appear. Nine policemen came to talk to us... And as I was talking with the police, as the international journalists stood around listening, suddenly a camera crew arrived from Japan! And then another! And then still another! You have to understand that this is SO IMPORTANT. These TV stations have REFUSED to cover the story in Taiji for years and years. NOW, for the first time, they have shown up, with cameras rolling. T

Farm Factory Food: Chicks being ground up alive.
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  9-1-2009
Hy-Line said the video "appears to show an inappropriate action and violation of our animal welfare policies," referring to chicks on the factory floor. But the company also noted that "instantaneous euthanasia" – a reference to killing of male chicks by the grinder – is a standard practice supported by the animal veterinary and scientific community. Story continues below According to Mercy for Animals, male chicks are of no use to the industry because they can't lay eggs and don't grow large or quickly enough to be raised profitably for meat. That results in the killing of 200 million male chicks a year. Hy-Line says on its Web site that its Iowa facility produces 33.4 million chicks. Based on that figure, Mercy for Animals estimates a similar number of male chicks are killed at the facility each year.

Organic Versus Conventional Food: UK Report Flawed
brightlight4
by brightlight4  7-31-2009    5
One of the biggest hurtles to reforming our food system in the United States is our unwillingness to acknowledge at the governmental level the superiority of sustainable agriculture. Leaving aside the nutrient question, organic agriculture helps improve the soil, protects farm workers from exposure to toxic chemicals, places an emphasis on animal welfare, and keeps toxic runoff out of our waterways. In so doing, sustainable agriculture improves not just our personal health, but our collective environmental health. The nutrient content in our food is going down because our soil is being degraded. Sustainable agriculture, by contrast, improves the food we eat by improving our environment. Instead of focusing on puny reports that tell us next to nothing and yet dominate the media with simple binaries, we should be taking an integrative approach to analyzing data and therefore face the hard truths before us. Sustainable agriculture improves the food we eat by improving our environment.

Animals can tell right from wrong
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  6-19-2009    3
This thinking is another indicator of a change in human assumptions about animal consciousness -- from uncaring reductionism to reflective respect. This is not new. In 1966, Conrad Lorenz made much the same point in On Agression, but noted that humans are the only animals whose moral principles against violence are so often breached in the form of murder and war.

United Egg Producers Recruits Kids In Its Sordid Campaign Against Animal Welfare
JackieDel
by JackieDel  6-14-2009    1
As outlandish as the cartoon is, it represents what the UEP has been trying to do for years: fight to preserve the status quo in its industry for the sake of the bottom line by deriding egg producers who choose not to use battery cages. A quick bit of background: Most egg-laying hens in the United States are confined in battery cages-barren wire cages so restrictive, the animals can't even spread their wings. Unable to nest, dust bathe, or perch, each bird has less space than a sheet of letter-sized paper on which to live for a year before she's slaughtered. It's hard to imagine a more miserable existence. In cage-free egg farms, while birds typically don't go outside (rendering the above cartoon even more absurd), they're at least able to walk around, lay their eggs in nests, and perch. In addition to cage-free birds typically not having outdoor access, even free-range birds are able to go inside barns when they want.
