POPSRoss Perot Jr Haggling to Finish Off the Rhino He Shot That Got Away "White rhino (Ceratotherum simum) are considered a conservation-dependent species and are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Intense efforts have increased the population from fewer than 100 in 1895 to approximately 17,500 today. Supporters of trophy hunting claim it is a viable method for “managing” the white rhino population. The practice also brings in tourism dollars and helps fund conservation efforts. Many others oppose the notion of trophy hunting, pointing out that killing an animal to get a thrill - and acquire a stuffed head for one’s wall - is not an acceptable “sport”." Apparently his son Hill Perot got his trophy, "white rhino head".

POPS10 Amazing Facts About Worldwide Water Use
More facts: Since 1950, water usage in the United States has risen 127 percent. If you shorten your showers by just a single minute, you can save approximately 700 gallons of water in a month. Letting the tap run when you brush your teeth wastes up to 4 gallons of water every time. It takes an average of 300 gallons to water your lawn. During the summer, this can account for almost half of your water usage. It takes an average of 300 gallons to water your lawn. During the summer, this can account for almost half of your water usage. Another wasteful desert endeavor, the proposed Waveyards water park in Mesa, Arizona will require up to 100 million gallons of groundwater every year in an area that receives a mere 8 inches of rainfall in that time. This last is particularly insane. All the Western states are in desperate need of water for crops and other basic uses. The Colorado River no longer reaches the sea. Salmon spawning grounds have almost disappeared and major animal (as we

POPSHint of conservation push brightens whaling stalemate "The best science is done by observing live whales in the marine environment, not figuring out how many you can sustainably kill," says Ramage. "We hope it will elicit other countries to participate," says Ramage. He added that encouragingly, the US and Norway had put forward a unanimously adopted resolution for countries to be more sensitive to the effects of climate change on whale and dolphin species. Ramage said that the IWC is undergoing a difficult transition, and hoped that Japan's proposal to be allowed to resume whaling in its own coastal waters would ultimately be rejected. "It would violate the ongoing moratorium, introduced in 1986," said Ramage. Discussions will continue over the coming year about the fate of the IWC, the subject of a review by the "small working group" – a panel of IWC representatives.

POPSCheetah-dog partnership at the San Diego Zoo More: Finally, when they died of old age, we decided to continue this dog and cheetah tradition. Chobe and Jessie were the second generation; Karroo and Sven are one of three current cheetah/dog pairs. We even have a wolf/dog pair: Akela and Nala! Where you can find them Karroo, a female cheetah, and Sven, her canine counterpart, appear regularly in shows and at the Wild Animal Park's Cheetah Run Safari. Their trainers talk about endangered species, our breeding success with cheetahs at the Wild Animal Park, and the importance of conservation and recycling. Also, look for a plaque commemorating Anna and Arusha, our first dog and cheetah pair, at the entrance of their first home, the Wegeforth Bowl, which hosts our sea lion shows.

POPSDetection dogs help save endangered species More: seven of the nine dogs currently classed as WDC Detection Dogs are, in fact, shelter animals. Dogs surrendered because they were "out of control" or "just plain crazy", it is that intense, obsessive drive to "do something" that makes them both an annoying pet and a successful working dog. To find a new detection dog, Megan or a colleague will walk up and down the rows of the shelter bouncing a tennis ball. The dogs that are more interested in the ball than anything else make the first cut. Then one by one, the dogs are tested using toys and food, with additional distractions added over time. The dog that is completely obsessed with the toy over food or any other distraction is a strong candidate.… Meet the real-life dog hero, Pepin, and his handler, Dr. Megan Parker, at the 2009 Wildlife Conservation Expo on October 3 in San Francisco. POPS3,000-year-old oak barrel of butter found in Kildare bog
more (at source): The barrel is also split along the middle, which is common with utensils filled with butter found in the bogs. A conservator at the National Museum, Carol Smith, told that the butter expands over time, causing the split. The barrel is about three feet long and almost a foot wide, and weighs almost 35kgs, (77lbs). The butter has changed to white and is now adipocere, which is essentially animal fat, the same sort of substance that is found on well-preserved bodies of people or animals found in the bog. The two men put the barrel in the cab of their tractor and brought it back to their base. "We put it in a black plastic bag," Mr Fitzharris explained. And last Tuesday in the Conservation Department of the National Museum of Ireland in Collins Barracks, the two men were reunited with the barrel in the company of Monasterevin man and one of the museum's keepers, Pádraig Clancy and conservator Carol Smith. Mr Clancy was contacted by Bord na Móna's archaeo

POPSJournalists Arrested, Attacked with Clubs for Filming Seal Slaughter If there were no market for the meat, oil and skins these animals provide, this senseless slaughter would not occur. These journalists were trying to bring this illegal and immoral activity out into the open and for this they were brutally beaten and arrested. I despise the cruel and inhumane method in which these animals are killed, and more importantly the way in which these journalists have been treated. We kill cattle, chickens, pigs and many other animals to provide us with food, clothing and accessories. Is the treatment of these seals considered more inhumane because they are cute? We don’t need meat for survival. We don’t need animal skins for survival. To accessorize our wardrobe or decorate our homes with dead animals is grotesque. This clip is about two gross wrongs that need to be addressed, the inhumane treatment of all animals and humans.

POPSEndangered Indonesian coral reefs Southeast Asia's biologically diverse coral reefs will disappear by the end of this century and wipe out coastal economies if climate change isn't addressed, conservation group WWF said in a report. The report, released to coincide with the World Ocean Conference in Manado, Sulawesi, warns that a do-nothing scenario will lead to a steady rise in sea temperatures and the death of the coral reefs.

In a sense it means that Caspian tigers never became extinct, it’s just that there never was any such thing as a ‘Siberian’ tiger." ... POPSAnimal Recognition Technology & sustainable environments
Click video at top source.Laptops, solar panels, can now remotely control capped bores troughs in the artesian basin in Australia as the program has been going for 9 years and bore drains have been being shut down for the past 20.There has been a big population of animals build up with all the extra stock watering places inland. Access to water can now be applied to all species allowing some feral in for harvesting, traditional owners and Parks & Wildlife Services are also taking an interest to control feral and wildlife populations to preserve the environment in times of drought rather than denude it.Kangaroos ,goats, camels ,donkeys & horses, wild pigs are all recognisable as well as tagged animals & sheep & cattle. One owner says he has recouped the installation costs in vegetation saved & sale of goats. It will take time like all inovative ideas to be wide spread but the work shops of primary producers all like the system. It isnt just applicable to artesian water sources .
