POPSObama: Student Radical [Andy McCarthy] . . . namely, America's underlying economic and political injustice: Generally, the narrow focus of the Freeze movement as well as academic discussions of first versus second strike capabilities, suit the military-industrial interests, as they continue adding to their billion dollar erector sets. When Peter Tosh sings that "everybody's asking for peace, but nobody's asking for justice," one is forced to wonder whether disarmament or arms control issues, severed from economic and political issues, might be another instance of focusing on the symptoms of a problem instead of the disease itself. Obama nevertheless did see some advantage in homing in on a small target Mark Bigelow ... points to fruitful work being done by other organizations involved with disarmament. patdollard.com/

POPSIran Uprising Live-Blogging Sunday June 28 5:31 PM ET -- Mousavi calls into today's protest. Several readers have passed along this video posted on Facebook. Reader Kia offers a description (slightly edited for clarity): "Dr. Beheshti (son of the Ayatollah Beheshti, who was a founder of the revolution and assassinated some 30 years ago -- the event today was held in his memory), who is a supporter of Mousavi, is first talking to people telling them that Mr. Mousavi is stuck in traffic and is not able to join them. 5:39 PM ET -- Senior cleric calls for separation of powers. The NIAC translates a story today about Ayatollah Javadi Amoli calling for separation of powers in Iran. 5:43 PM ET -- Iranian state TV tries to spin Neda's death. An Iranian-American friend sends along some new propaganda from state media making the case for why Neda's death wasn't caused by government forces.

POPSObama Fails Crucial Gay Test Well, it appears that Obama has made up his mind. The concerts take place this weekend, and McClurkin remains on the program. Obama has made his choice; that he will not choose, and let the homophobe appear while at the same time, offering time to a pro-gay minister. Seems to me if Obama cannot make the correct moral decision for fear of upsetting bigots, than he certainly is in no position to make decisions about other issues as well. This from a man who has faced discrimination his entire life. A different kind of politician? I fear not.

POPSThe "Chicks" Rock The Grammy's I have been a fan of the Dixie Chicks since their hit "Wide Open Spaces". I did not drop my support when Maines put her foot in her mouth. When Clear Channel was promoting Chicks bashing, I still did not falter. When their new record came out, I was one of the first to buy it. I played "Not Ready To Make Nice" loud enough and long enough to possibly annoy my neighbors. In fact, it's my main ringtone on my phone. I am very proud of the Dixie Chicks, today. I think they are good musicians and I am proud that they continued to speak their mind when the rest of the Country community wanted to stone them. I don't need role-models in my old age, but I am proud of their example and I point to that when I talk to my kids about using their voice to speak up against those things that they are against, even when the world is against them.
