POPSDispelling myths about meatless meals The right-wing blowhards getting their knickers in a twist over this is so amusing. Because it's indoctrination to teach kids that anything but meat for lunch is a good thing. How dare they! Like kids experiencing foregoing meat one meal a week is some sort of communist plot to weaken our children and make them susceptible to socialized medicine and nuclear disarmament or something.

POPSFacts are in fact irrelevant It is often more important how is something said than what is actually said. Probably that's the way the human mind works, the memes that are propagated are not the most factual, but the most appealing, intriguing, amusing or surprising. The problem are the consequences for science if the focus is set on communication at any expense instead of accuracy. However, a perfect accuracy with no communication is pointless. Thus, as with all conflicting goals, the way to go is probably a compromise, as it doesn't look like we are changing human nature anytime soon.

POPSThe 10 Most Annoying Everyday Devices of Modern Civilization Not all gadgets provide an improvement to our lives. Many gadgets serve to anger and annoy their users and others around them more than they actually provide any positive function. Here’s a list of gadgets and devices that have all undoubtedly found themselves at the wrong end of a mallet or strip of asphalt countless times. The photos and rantings are amusing. I favorite rants are about the aftermarket car audio system and the car alarm.

POPSAfghanistan and the Wages of Empire
WASHINGTON -- On Monday, as the vote-counting in Afghanistan was nearing an end, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was briefed by the American ambassador in Kabul, Karl W. Eikenberry. The same day, the ambassador delivered a blunt message to the front-runner, President Hamid Karzai: "Don't declare victory." The slim majority tentatively awarded Mr. Karzai in Afghanistan's fraud-scarred election has put the Obama administration in an awkward spot: trying to balance its professed determination to investigate mounting allegations of corruption and vote-rigging while not utterly alienating the man who seems likely to remain the country's leader for another five years. Another way of putting it might be to say that U.S. officials are finding it increasingly difficult to construct a rationale for allowing the man they put in charge of Afghanistan to remain in charge of Afghanistan. This is not a new problem. Colonial powers have faced these challenges throughout h

POPSSimple insight into Latin American culture—institutionalized revenge
It's amusing that an academic/pundit can have these insights and yet they do not interfere with his policy proposals, which completely contradict the insights themselves. Author reviews several cases pending against former rulers for corruption. He says, Few Latin American countries are exempt from these judicial vendettas. The victor attempts to liquidate the vanquished. In those nations, the law is not an instrument to regulate civilized coexistence but a mace to crush the adversary's head. , which is quite true. Benito Juárez (Mexico's first Indian president, mid-19th century) put it best, after the ten-year civil war and insurgency against conservatives and monarchists: "For my friends, clemency; for my enemies, the law." The author's suggestion for a remedy is to revisit a Spanish colonial practice, called "judgments of residence." Instead of a remedy, however, they would become just another example of the evil that the author describes: the law as a club with which to be

POPSMan Apologizes for Naked Ass in Church Brother Hyrum Woodruff, another member of the congregation, was also upset. "I didn't come here today to have to look at Brig's hairy ass. If I have to see anyone's ass in church, I'd rather it be Sister Camilla Benson's. Her ass is smaller and leaner... and has won the donkey race at the county fair the past two years." Brother George Albert McKay, a blind member of the congretation, sat down next to the donkey, thinking that it was his wife. Bishop Newell Rigdon said that "it was a little amusing when George leaned over and tried to kiss Brig's ass." Smith has promised to keep his ass out of church from now on.

POPSA Psychiatrist on Why Bipolar Disorder May be a Source of Humour This from the brilliant Blue to Blue blog by a practising psychiatrist in response to comments yesterday over her or merriment over the Onion's item on Obama's 'mood disorder'. It is one that I find I can accept and pretty close to my own CM comments this week. Anyway, it is good that the issue has been raised, and certainly an opportunity for others to visit this (often hilarious) blog.

POPSPelosi proudly un-American
"Yesterday morning USA Today ran an Op-Ed by Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer, which for ease of discussion I will attribute to Pelosi. The title is ‘Un-American’ attacks can’t derail health care debate, which frankly I find amusing since I don’t recall a debate on that or any other subject this year, actually happening on Capitol Hill. She bounces back and forth between oooohing and aaaahing about how awesome (butterflies, rainbows, unicorns, fairy dust) government takeover of your personal health care decisions would be, and berating freedom-loving Americans (bad conservatives! Flyover country! Hitler! Astroturf! Limbaugh! Goblins!) for strongly expressing their opinions to their elected representatives, and oppressively running into union thug fists with their faces. She’s right about one thing: Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. As it happens, “drowning out opposing views” is an area of expertise for Speaker Pelosi. Special Orders after the last recorded vote of t
